Famicom Cart

Here we have all the games in the Famicom Cart Section.
Famicom Cart
Shoot Em Up
Tate, meaning vertical, scrolling shoot em up from Capcom’s classic stable of WWII plane blasters. Good, solid arcade mechanics and plenty to keep the guns ratatating in both smaller planes and the big, bad boss versions.
Famicom Cart
Soundtrack
Proof of Columbus Circles dedication to the cause comes in this demonstration of the Famicom’s chip tune architecture. Its non-playable, but fans of synthetised game music will lap up the tunes and the animated dancers on screen (with a display of the way the tune is made.)
Famicom Cart
Rhythm
Famed for its Famicom revival, Columbus Circle goes for a rhythm action premise. There are four games; baseball relies on hitting in time to the beat, the Space Invaders style shooting is again in time to the rhythm, the platform action requires jumping hazards to the music and finally the space defense relies on using the shields at the right time and in the right place.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Cavernous tunnels await where the hero or heroine needs to keep an eye on the map whilst fighting off orcs and cyclops like giants utilising swords and bows & arrows. Rumours have it a rather huge dragon may need to be slain too. Subtitled Heroes of the Lance.
Famicom Cart
Shooter
Forced scrolling pre-historic shooting action with all manner of attacks awaiting including throwing stars and more dinosaurs than you could shake a stick at. The Famicom takes it all admirably in its stride despite the plethora of on-screen action Known in Japan as Shin Jinrui.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Genki Gurus will know it only takes a few Japanese ghosts, a wise sage and a few ninjas and Genki is sold on the concept. Where Ja Ja excels is utilising a smaller player character to allow so much going on on screen. A superb conversion and a tip top example of the genre. Oh, did we mention riding on giant frogs?
Famicom Cart
Platform
Nice scale to the sprites on the platforming world allowing players to take in the potential hazards and escape routes. Known as Agina’s Prophecy.
Famicom Cart
Platform
More shurikens than you could shake a stick at as this ninja themed platformer journeys through feudal Japan and into the spiritual realm at times too. Imaginative levels such as the extending and contracting bamboo pole section and bizarre bosses drawing on Japanese ghosts and folk stories.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Keen Genki devotees will be well aware of our obsession with oriental ghosts and plenty pop up in this unusual RPG which sees the young Akuma lock horns with the ones he is unable to sneak past.
Famicom Cart
Action
Sweet take on a race game as players swap the cockpit for a penguin and glide across the ice to their destination part of the course. Cheeky sea lions pop up though and players must avoid them, the holes in the ice and even the fish they frivolously toss in your direction. Not all is to be avoided though and a discerning eye is a must to determine if it’s a hole in the ice or a welcome flag to give bonus points or even a brief respite through a period of flight.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Culture Brain takes inspiration from a pipe dream of Persia in this Middle Eastern infused RPG. The combat is full of action and gets the sabres swinging around and great use of colour brings the vibrancy out.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Beautifully illustrated in the style of crayons, think Yoshi’s Island for the Famicom. The character sprites are all very cute and the tunes are upbeat in keeping with the action. The dino hero’s ability to roll adds to his versatility. A Japanese flavour to the action too with walking riceballs and cartoony squids.
Famicom Cart
Action
Astro Robo has its own USP in that Sasa utilises its gun to manoeuvre round the screen collecting the items required to clear the level. The momentum physics are excellent and it deserves its success due to its innovation.
Famicom Cart
Sports
Some great imagination to mix up the action with a track and hurdle level, mountain path with wild boar, a section based on the tunnels of a pyramid as well as lakeside and riverside levels. The height of retro chic. Designed to be played with the Family Trainer.
Famicom Cart
Shoot Em Up
Vertically scrolling shooting action as the players ship is encircled by sphere shields to try and survive. The enemies seem to fly at you like swordfish or flying fish and it’s a good idea to keep hammering the fire button to keep them at bay. Keeping blasting ensures a path through land based defences too.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Captures the comedy of the source material as Bakabon clings on to the platform levels that must be negotiated, albeit with the help of a bowl of noodles power up, before tackling the madcap bosses. Full title Heisei Tensai Bakabon.
Famicom Cart
Action
Classic Nintendo gameplay as the player floats higher and higher on screen to float past the obstacles, but the perpetual motion makes control a distinct art: knowing when to drop anchor and when to float like a bee.
Famicom Cart
Sports
Early baseball game from the sturdy SNK stable that uses that unique, exaggerated emotions of the players to capture the fun of the sport. Spoilt sluggers will lose their tempers snapping the bat in two at being out, but the mechanics are nice and simple making it easy to pick up and play for those lacking a passion for pitching and without an inkling for batting.
Famicom Cart
Action
Plenty of tributes to its mighty back catalogue in game for the discerning gamer. Taking out tanks that appear in the maze means keeping a keen eye out for where they will appear, if in control of the skirmish. Otherwise it means grabbing those freeze power ups or blasting a whole in the maze to sit in, perhaps even behind camouflage.
Famicom Cart
Platform
The Battletoad games are very collectable and its easy to see why in this Rare crafted version. Cliched some of the locations may be, but when the execution is of such high standard its easy to see why they become much imitated and rarely bettered. Fun, wholesome action that squeezes every iota out of the hardware.

Famicom Cart
RPG
The graphics are colourful and the roots are firmly in the old school with limited health to bring out the very best in gamers. The shops add a great incentive to risk all to grab that extra power up.
Famicom Cart
Action
The penguin protagonists look like they have escaped from Pengo as they work together to get to the exit. Team work is a must as both penguins need to escape the level in order to progress.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Organic platform action blended with RPG elements. Unusual, creative adversaries await alongside the usual moving platforms and the less ordinary switches to button bashing tests of strength.
Famicom Cart
Action
Known as Robo Warrior in the West, the Bomber King must get through the levels by dropping bombs to clear a path whilst taking down the array of enemies taking pot shots at your mecha suit. Good blend of tactics and action.
Famicom Cart
Action
Absolute classic gameplay assures Bomber Man a place in the gaming hall of fame. Simple graphics suit the fast pace perfectly as later 3D attempts remonstrated. Multiplayer is where this comes into its own.
Famicom Cart
Puzzle
An enjoyable playing card based game in the Tetris/Puyo Puyo/Columns mould when instead of blocks or squishy balls, players must align the cards to make flushes of the same suit or, for example, Jack, Queen, King. Pleasant chip tunes and bunny girls to complete the Eighties Vega theme.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Unusual vertically scrolling shooter set on a background of ever changing coloured panels as players pummel opposing vessels to gain valuable dollars to spend on upgrading the ship and all important fuel. Unusual in the fact that players must keep scoring in order to keep the money coming in to progress.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Delightful chip tunes add a cheery, medieval banquet feel to the old school platform action. The hero is a pixelated Robin Hood look-a-like who nimbly negotiates moving platform lifts to collect the keys to clear the cavernous levels.
