A Bit Special
Something rather special from the Big N: an evolutionary title leading the way as ever. The goal is to become the animal leader by evolving into a beast with the ability to take on and defeat the current leader. To do this you have to attack other animals of the right sort required – a successful assault will allow you to evolve up the evolutionary scale. Yet progress comes at the price of being a bigger fish, so to speak, and catching the eye of the other predators out there. Appropriate music and even purple blood add to the emotional involvement of protecting your animal. Beautifully designed gaming world made entirely of cubes adding to the surreal feel of this off beat Nintendo cracker.
Gamecube
RPG
Every detail exudes a triple A title with lavish visuals blended with anime avatars, stirring orchestral score and high-end voice acting. The look is really stunning even today adding up to an epic opus.
Gamecube
Action
Koei’s first release on the GameCube packed with the epic battles its name has become synonymous with. Cleverly constructed bosses will have you swaying to avoid their assaults and the enemies are highly imaginative even including a jellyfish. Each playable character has an elemental power as their theme to be summoned as a magical assault in the battlefield, all very strikingly realised.

Gamecube
Action
The Beyblade phenomena swept Japan like an annual typhoon as players fire their customised spinning tops against an opponents with all manner of hurrahs from the avatars.
Gamecube
Action
Capcom remains the master of survival horror as it tweaks the Resident Evil engine to come up with a masterpiece of GC manipulation – not that you’ll be wanting to get too close to viewing the detailed textures. And not that its only the visual splendour Capcom considered: items can now be left on the floor and teamwork is required to get out of the many claustrophobic spots.
Gamecube
Action
Gets right under your skin from the off as the sense of foreboding grows with each new assailant from the legions of the undead. The detail is a little too much at times.
Gamecube
A Bit Special
Subtitled ‘A Wonderful Life’, Genki would rather not be running around after the horses, chicken and sheep everyday in this farm management game. Still the prospect of golden eggs helped Genki out of bed at the break of dawn. Freedom to visit others in town including the archaeologist, barmaid and little tree people (only after eating a special mushroom.) Miyamoto san would be proud. Highly original.
Gamecube
Action
A fun, all-action racing game with super deformed characters from the Ultraman and Kamen Rider roster making up the majority of the starting line with other well know live action heroes thrown in to the mull. Courses take a variety of routes even through homes and the bath house at times and the emphasis is on fun rather than a serious race. And the humour combined with the colourful look produce a worthy import cracker. Can be translated as Bike Hero.
Gamecube
A Bit Special
Savvy, genre defying developer of Moon on the Playstation and Lack of Love on the Dreamcast turns his hand to little robots whose aim is simple: to please their owners. The wee robot will clean the house all just to see a smiling face of the owner and for a charge using the plug in their back. Various items allow the robot to further explore the giant house such as the copter to fly and the spoon to dig whilst remembering to bag a bit of moolah. As ever quite difficult to place in a succinct genre as it is to put down.
Gamecube
Sports
Captures the airs and expansive feel of the original arcade source material perfectly as you whizz around town picking up fares. Time constraints soon pile on the pressure, but that’s where the knowledge comes in. Being able to power slide the corners helps too, as well as impressing cheerleader passengers…
Gamecube
Action
Superb update of the N64 version in which you battle robots but can also customise the main body, legs, gun, bomb and special weapon to last longer. Easy to see why this game was so popular in Japan with some light RPG elements to distract from the heavy metal fights. Quite collectable too on the format.
Gamecube
Quiz
A quiz game including Bingo and Roulette that is great for gamers looking to boost their Japanese ability and kanji count, alongside a good bit of general knowledge. With questions as varied as from Cambodian temples to chemicals of the brain, the mic fitted with button adds to the authenticity. I will have a B please Bob.
Gamecube
Action
A quest based adventure as the mouse everybody loves seeks the pieces of the broken mirror to get back home. The gaming world looks a treat, as if Disney would have it any other way but with the added Capcom polish it really shines with a sparkle. In game events can set off a frantic button bashing sequence to overcome the challenge. And the mini games such as flying a plane around collecting items or snowboarding down the slopes provide a good clean fun diversion. Can be linked to the GBA through the link cable (game and cable sold separately) to change around the Magical Mirror world.
Gamecube
Rhythm
Takes the Bongo controller on a new level by using it to control the platform action. Tap left and right to move the direction, both togther to jump and clap to perform actions. Levels are set against the clock but a minimum number of bananas need to be collected to progress to the next stage. Add to that lush jungle graphics, a score bonus for good use of chimp gymnastics throughout the level plus some frantic tub thumping when delivering blows to the bosses and you have a real storming title.

Action
Gameplay has two sections: on-rails, Star Fox style and free roaming shooting. Gameplay takes place on the back of a dragon a la Panzer Dragoon. The anime based story revolves around being transported into an alternate reality where battles on the backs of Dragons are commonplace. Developed by Treasure.
Gamecube
Sports
Fewer gamers have a bad word to say about F Zero, other than why isn’t it being updated still. Futuristic racing with high velocity and plenty of room for tactics make for a pleasurable, if somewhat intense, race title from the Nintendo hall of fame.
Gamecube
Action
A wonderful version of the cherished series seeing players take a hands on approach as a foot soldier behind enemy lines. There are some fun vehicles littered around that make for great fun when commandeered such as the motorbike or plane.
Gamecube
Sports
Fully licensed by FIFA and the Japan Football Association ensuring the proper teams. Packed with evidence EA’s panache for presentation. The series has come a long way since its Mega Drive incarnations.
Gamecube
Action
Brings back warm memories of Rampage as the kaiju get to toss around boulders, buildings and fellow monsters to destroy opponents, usually the city gets flattened too.
Gamecube
Action
A highly collectable GameCube title that combines Virtua On with the action of Power Stone and throws in a spot of Danball Senki. Players have their own robot persona and the colour and speed of gameplay, blending the boundaries of anime and gaming, make it easy to see why it has such a popular status. Sometimes known as Gatcha Force.
Gamecube
Action
A GameCube exclusive combining Battle of the Planet style avatars and massive mecha battles. A cool head is required in the cockpit when the intense battles are at their most furious. Also known as Senshitachi no Kiseki.
Gamecube
Shoot Em Up
Tweaks the successful Dreamcast incarnation to add a few extras but the core play mechanics remain as pure as ever and the tate mode remains intact. As do the Arcade and Challenge modes, but the GameCube mode is most welcomed with a demo of the level section that can then be played in slow or normal speeds. The main catch to this full on blast is the selection of vessel weapon colour: be it black or white. Enemy ships are either one colour or the other and the score is doubled for taking them out with the opposite coloured projectile. Further score incentive is offered in the multiplier that increases for shooting ships of the same colour in sequence. Yet your own vessel is invincible to bullets of the same colour making for some tactical thought. In fact taking on bullets of the same colour is required to charge the only power up in the vessel’s supergun. Its quite unusual in that respect but there are no other power ups in a bold and refreshing move. Two player mode gives some welcomed respite and high scores can be clocked up with some well worked teamwork. Five chapters may not sound like many, but only the dedicated shmup fan will see the credits roll.
Gamecube
Sports
Subtitled ‘New Generation Vs Legends.’ Kinikuman is an alien prince whose escapades are detailed in the Shonen Jump manga. This is a whacked out wrestling game with both story and tournament modes that could teach the WWF games a half nelson or two.
Gamecube
Action
With a full complement of the series totalling twenty characters, Bandai has pushed the boat out to bring the full on anime to life. Plenty of fisticuffs as fans would expect when such a spontaneously combustible crowd are confined together. Controls are simplistic making this one not only for the joypad dexterous. Initial story mode play is required to unlock a lot of the many stages with frequent special requirements to complete a story mode level, such as within the time limit. Mini games are fun to enjoy too with challenges such as sneaking into a building unnoticed or collecting stolen sweets plus multiplayer varieties aswell. Also known as Zatch Bell Mamodo Fury.
Gamecube
Action
Mass brawls with more speed lines than Akira and a stupendously slick cel shaded look as you’d expect from anime artistes Bandai. Bizarre group of characters each with an extra persona like Ranma.
Gamecube
Action
Shows its animation studio roots in playing like an anime complete with a fine array of characters and superb specials. The settings are imaginative too with a digger surrounding the fight ring in the quarry stage and what looks like a bizarre transportation of Stonehedge to central London as players battle it out around the Houses of Parliament. Fast and furious fight action.

Sports
Beautiful courses and the opportunity to make your own character with a clever analogue shot system to make this club the competition. A formal approach to the sport with a good variety in courses from desert, to mountainous, to volcanic island via Egypt.
