Nintendo 64

Here we have all the games in the Nintendo 64 Section.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Plenty of twists, turns, snow drifts, flips and fun in this fine take on snowboarding that captures some of its carefree attitude to careering down the slopes at break neck speeds. Nice take on the genre and looking nice on the Nintendo roku jyu yon.
Nintendo 64
Action
Bomberman freed from his maze confines and tossing bombs around like confetti to reveal hidden items or take down opponents. Players must negotiate the 3D courses utilising switches and other secrets to progress. Ambitious change in direction from Hudson and with a fine graphical look reminiscent of Mario 64 in parts.

Platform
Rare’s values shine through as virtuously as Nintendo’s in its quest to distil pure, gaming fun. And the partnership between the two was never as bosom buddy as it was on the Nintendo 64. Few can match Nintendo’s eye for detail, but Rare have savoured the gaming moment with this fine action title.
Nintendo 64
Platform
Sorely missed from the Nintendo brand with Rare having attained near Big N standards in its games and especially with the tweaks of the sequel. The gaming is pure, the worlds are well realised (with plenty of play testing) and the multilayer mini games add a generous extra helping to the cauldron.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Update of the Super Famicom top seller with Itoi Shigesato given a full 3D work out on the N64. Initial catches won’t go breaking your tsuri controller, but these smaller catches can be used to bring in hard cash for upgrading the boat and equipment. As with all fishing, chatting to the locals will reveal the latest hot spots to check out for that killer bass. Just make sure the rumble pack is switched on to get that feel for the bite.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Genki can’t fault any racing game that lets you ride as a Ramen truck and the cel shaded sprite look of Choro Q looks like a car chase from the legendary Lupin anime and is appropriate to its toy car roots. Known as Penny Racers in the West, but we aren’t sure if the ramen truck made the cut.
Nintendo 64
RPG
Import only exclusive title in which you battle robots but can also customise the main body, legs, gun, bomb and special weapon to last longer. Easy to see why this game was so popular in Japan sparking a sequel with some light RPG elements to distract from the heavy metal fights.
Nintendo 64
Rhythm
Full to Disney colour and razzmatazz as all the old faves get down to some modern and classic tunes to Konami’s proven DDR formula. A nice, exclusive N64 mode to boot.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Horse racing and breeding for the 64 with very nice graphics in that distinctive 64 style. Its very compelling to bring up a young foal to eventually win the cup, before being put out to pasture.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Think Mario Kart but with plane-based levels as well as Nintendo entrusts Rare with its fine intellectual properties based on the Donkey Kong universe. The action itself odes not tax much cerebrally and its great fun to unleash a well-timed weapon.
Nintendo 64
RPG
The Doraemon world is perfectly suited to the N64s rotund graphical style and the Mario 64-esque world is true to the anime series with plenty of scrapes to get into.
Nintendo 64
One on One Beat Em Up
Various super heroes looking like Dural crossed with the Power rangers enjoy the 3D arenas with Lethal Challenges possible as pugilists lock horns during battle. Its possible to bet on the outcome (not that Genki would condone such unprofessionalism) and some tasty combos add to the impressive package.
Nintendo 64
RPG
An epic RPG looking like Mario 64 made into an adventure quest with plenty of hidden locales to investigate. In a fantasy style, the battle sequences feature stunning pyrotechnics and good mechanics. Known as Quest 64 in the West.
Nintendo 64
Platform
Three Dimension update of the series that seems from another dimension at times, but thats why we love it. Has a great feel of a Japanese town of old as you meander around the streets chewing tako yaki and small talk with the residents. The Japanese version is also the full version with no subtle changes. God bless Goemon. Full Japanese title: ‘Ganbare Goemon Neo Momoyama Bakufu no Odori.’ Known as Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon in the West.
Nintendo 64
Board Game
Card battle game well suited to multiplayer matches with the favourites of the Goemon world making appearances in various guises. The setting is full of Japanese cultural references like dango sweets and the battles take place to Hokusai style background paintings, but at times its not so clear if the programmers have only been eating shiitake mushrooms in their miso soup or not.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Daley Thompson has a lot to answer for as the official Olympic license gives this modern day incarnation a bit more of a refined approach to the varying disciples next to its more down to earth, retro podium runner. Known in the West as International Track and Field Summer Games.
Nintendo 64
Shooter
Fantasy first person shooter with appropriately eerie music and dark, dank cavernous levels where switches must be activated to progress. Plenty of weapons to help and they are needed with many a beasty hid behind secret doors.
Nintendo 64
A Bit Special
Long before Pokemon Go, N64 fans were using the Voice Recognition System to chat with Pikachu and enjoy a days fishing for Magikarp or planting in the garden. A great idea cleverly executed. Known as Pikachu Genki Dechuu in Japan.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Suitably whiny engines and plenty of sparks both visually and literally as the N64 gets a challenging work out and handles it without breaking sweat. The starting line up being displayed is a nice touch (with plenty more attention to detail in the anchor lights) and the essential speed makes the cut to appease fans of the series with little time to admire the sponsors signs, bridges or grandstand.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Fully licensed J League football game utilising all the madcap mascots from Japan’s top flight in a realistic approach to the beautiful game with visuals that shows EA means business. Makes good use of crossing – an integral part of any match but often overlooked in games of this genre. The cup option often comes as a welcome distraction when struggling on the brink of relegation to J1.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Konami’s Major A team produces the good once again with this distinct football title cramming in far more polygons than the PSX version and crafting a different game as a result. The first football game to offer such big sprites and close range action whilst still utilising a fine passing game to unpick the opposition defense that would make Sensei Soccer proud. Like Nintendo’s finest titles you can jump straight in and play, but it takes a few hours on the lonely training pitch to reap the rewards on a Saturday afternoon.
Nintendo 64
Platform
Beautiful 3D platform game with Kirby coming into his own and very much the star of the show wielding flaming swords, tossing bombs into enemy territory and even turning into a rather mean looking rock clad Kirby. A classic series given a fitting tribute on the 64 with some stunning touches such as the flame effects and gorgeous backgrounds.
Nintendo 64
RPG
Chasing after chickens, playing musical instruments, leaping across chasms, horse riding, target shooting… Such an eagerly awaited link in the chain and amazingly able to live up to expectations and even exceed them. A lesson in game design from start to finish. Cinematic in its execution, always emotive.
Nintendo 64
Puzzle
The solid puzzle planning of Tetris meets the lush presentation of Disney in Capcom’s expert hand. A very fine version to savour.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Developed by Camelot with plenty of hidden secrets like the mystery match up that lets you unlock the hidden characters – if you beat them. Gives the sport a more exciting translation to the console as it doesn’t try to be too realistic and can be easily picked up and played. And the ghost course is a real treat.
Nintendo 64
Action
Genki’s weapon of choice is a craftily dispatched red turtle shell. A poison chalice to follow up the mode 7 marvel that was the Super Famicom original, yet utilises the additional processing power of the 64 well with mud tracks and other vehicles on the circuit.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Special pack to fully appreciate the multiplayer joys of Mario Karts world. Genki’s weapon of choice is a craftily dispatched red turtle shell. A poison chalice to follow up the mode 7 marvel that was the Super Famicom original, yet utilises the additional processing power of the 64 well with mud tracks and other vehicles on the circuit.
Nintendo 64
A Bit Special
Madcap mini games galore, all fitting the bill of being quick to pick up and great fun, especially in multiplayer. Second hand. Also comes with Happy Mini Games Collection manual. Creasing to covers of both manuals. Box dents and scuffing with a small tear on the top edge.
Nintendo 64
RPG
Follows up the spankingly good Paper Mario combining it skilfully with RPG elements to delve deeper into the colourful Mario world. The balance is just right for those who like their RPG action to be kept fairly simple without too many treks to remote caves to light a lantern all beautifully coated in Nintendo’s saccharine sweetness.
