One on One Beat Em Up
Warming the cockles of side on scrapper starved gamers comes the sequel to the anime expose to satisfy the most demanding of fight fans. The all female cast is reminiscent of the seminal Asuka series, but unfortunately such high-res graphics were never a possibility on the humble PC Engine. Presentation is spot on with a wee nod to the doujin fan and a fine story mode with pre-bout banter between the cat like ladies. The title comes from the Arcana power which is chosen to help each character get through the bout. Great to see the ladies are still doing it in 2D. Keep them coming we requested and our pleas have been answered.

Action
Pretty gruesome with players taking to the narrow confines of the slum and its best not to hang around with the dull glint of a machete never too far behind. Clever programming to not keep the gaming world too open and assist players without feeling the restraint. Not for the faint hearted.
PS3
Action
With production values of a high budget Hollywood and no doubt a cast of voice actors to match, Biohazard 6 sees it all kick off again with nerves of steel and plenty of bullets a requisite to not ending up zombie fodder. Genki feels a nervous twitch returning as the hordes of undead begin to mass and a real sense of dread when the bosses begin to surface.
PS3
Action
Genki must confess Biohazard gives us the jitters. Not quite as much as Konami’s Silent Hill – at least you know where you are with a brain hungry zombie, whereas its hard to suss many of Konamis nightmarish creatures. But we digress – Operation Raccoon City seems pretty free of friendly, furry forest dwellers and a much more trigger happy, FPS style of game than the original. Those of the old school may find it hard to fire off so many rounds, yet there is polish a plenty and a fright round most corners for those of mild disposition.
PS3
Action
Genki found Capcoms opus scary enough with a couple of Dobermans on the humbler PSX, so it is with a slight twitch that we fired up this latest blockbuster with the production values of a big budget Hollywood flick. Whilst the twitch was little eased by the onscreen tension, it is a joy to see the Hollywood darlings also have a few nerdy, Genki types hanging round them making sure that beneath all the visual pyrotechnics remains a rock solid gaming system tougher than the STARS team. Sweaty palms and prickly armpits ensue.
PS3
One on One Beat Em Up
Plenty of goading and eye catching backgrounds that distract from the smooth play mechanics honed by years of experience in sweeping all before it in the 2D fighting world.
PS3
One on One Beat Em Up
Arc keeps the 2D torch burning bright as this illuminating fight fest celebrates all that is good in the genre. Akiba fashion culture permeates every pore, so much so you may wonder if it was developed in a maid café as a post club venue after the AKB48 concert. A fine celebration of joypad dexterity and visual pyrotechnics.
PS3
Action
Konami utilises its experience of all out action titles to good effect combining it like an expert chef with gothic decay and organic backgrounds as players face colossus proportioned bosses (without wishing to give too much away) alongside what looks like an extra from Colossus besides swinging across cliffs. Hats off.
PS3
Simulation
Special title capturing the hopes and mainly fears of a late twenty something stuck in a cycle of not wishing to work too hard in a part time position but suffering the lack of financial stability that results in. The ever pressing fear of pregnant girlfriends and the alluring yet foreboding Catherine prey heavily on our protagonists mind as the character interaction plays out with a wealth of mini games. One such involves shifting platforms to climb to the top of the tower and success in these is linked to progress in the special game.
PS3
Action
3D battle all out action as New York seems to once again take the brunt of the meteor shower and rampaging giant monsters (but I suppose Tokyo has had more than its fair share of those.) Impressive results from the PS3 hardware and nice pacing to the relentless action.
PS3
One on One Beat Em Up
A fine fight series to see off the competition through the many battles over the years. The rock soundtrack pumps the adrenalin with intuitive combos and fun, varied fight arenas.

Sports
Sonys Liverpool office attains F1 nirvana with this amazingly accurate representation of the sport only missing the smell of burning rubber and fuel fumes. Not only is the game almost indistinguishable from the Sunday afternoon sport, but the cars handling is true to the laws of physics making for smooth handling Ea mistake is always the drivers fault (or one of the keener competitors!) Includes a career mode to play from the humble beginnings up to the podium with all the official F1 data included from the 2006 season. Attaining new echelons of excellence.
PS3
Action
Based in in ancient Japan, Genji really brings the Heian period to life with graphical splendor in the rich, colourful kimonos where you can make out every thread. The cut scenes are of sublime quality as the scene is set: Genji clan must once again defeat the rival Heishi clan with a seeming supernatural influence. As you’d expect from a game of rich samurai heritage the action is hack and slash, or dice and slice more appropriately with the sharp sword used and the combos soon roll off the joypad. With progress comes the opportunity to play as new characters: the slow, but powerful Benkei, the spear armed Lord, but its the nimble priestess Shizuka with her nifty grapple hook that looks most stunning. All group members must be equally protected if you don’t want the credits to roll early – one death of any member means game over. The game also utilises the systems motion sensing controller.

With an additional course, around twenty new models of cars and up to 16 cars in online races, rev heads will be in a spin of the sheer gloss of GT5 Spec III finish. Even for a series renowned for its good looks, GT5 looks like attaining a new plateau of race game enjoyment with all the beauty of a race girl and the gritty realism of a pit lane skid out. Sony shows its gunning for pole position taking full advantage of modern technology in both the visual and audio lanes. Its no revolution, just real progress.
PS3
Action
Hack and slash through hordes of mechas as the stirring Gundam soundtrack once again kicks in. Excellent use of lighting adding to the marvel of the meticulous special moves that are applied to the cannon fodder. Use of the head up display brings in plenty of conversations with the series protagonists adding infinitely to the atmosphere with there ‘Battle of the Planet’ retro-style avatars and reminiscent of the seminal Cybernator on the SFC. Of course its possible to transform into a ship to banish a batch of mecha foot soldiers to vehicle Valhalla.
PS3
Action
Immortalised by the line ‘You are already dead’ and Kenshiro’s lightning fast attacks, the post-apocalyptic world of North Star was one of the first animes released in the West. Think of a cartoon Mad Max where you meet adversaries and more often than not, their heads explode. Koei gets nasty and heads roll with their multi character mechanics working a treat in a top, top license.

Shooter
Cinematic shooting action as Capcom blends the boundary between Hollywood blockbuster and triple A gaming. Plenty of nice surprises as players run and gun anything that moves. The Japanese version has Japanese subtitles to the cut scenes and uses English for the audio.
PS3
A Bit Special
The small, monkey like pet comes to life on the TV and those family members in the room are on screen too thanks to the Eye Toy. The family can then interact with the monkey: giving them a wash, playing tennis, generally monkeying around. Innovative as ever from Sony.
PS3
Action
Snake is starting to develop that thousand yard stare that a veteran of so many conflicts is in danger of. Yet the gameplay is invigorating and far from jaded as it once again ups both the gameplay and visual ante with seeming ease. Granted the action ante has also been upped and some will bemoan the lack of stealth. May will have little chance to notice amongst the strafe and shrapnel.
PS3
Action
A welcomed return of good old Snake, as mean and moody as ever. In fact the Pyche meter now means that stress levels have to be effectively managed for our man to stay in top form. Luckily a snack, drink, good read or a smoke can balance things out. The camera has shifted to on shoulder, first third person to make use of the ever increasingly thin line between top end games with budgets and films with some stunning visuals treats. But the score is very stirring and surpasses many of Hollywoods finest efforts. A guest appearance of the Snatcher robot is a reassuring nod to the fans of Kojima showing he hasn’t forgotten his roots. Subtitled Guns of the Patriots.
PS3
Action
High tension and even higher stakes calls for a cool hand from Snake when stealthily sneaking past guards and taking down CCTV cameras to free the key hostage. As ever, the twist awaits…
PS3
Action
The epic series once again cranks up the tension and blurs the boundary between cinema and gaming. Such huge budgets and efforts of so many developers make for an exhilarating gaming experience not for the faint hearted. Highly commended to show the power of the platform with gameplay to match.

Sports
With superbly modelled and adorable characters and a new shot system, Everybody’s Golf looks as good as ever on the PS3 as the golfer shapes up to the tee. The shot interface is easy to pick up. But it’s the attention to detail with the caddy chasing after a nice shot or the grumpy reaction at having shot a bogey that Minna no Golf really turns on the charm. Combined with birds singing, the department store soothing soundtrack and plenty of sunshine, this looks like being the definitive PS3 golf game.

Announcing the PS3’s arrival with outstanding visual splendor but equal attention has been spent tweaking the games engine as you ride rough over desert terrain trying to capture top spot. Dangerous short cuts are available and it’ll drive you to take them in desperation for the coverted pole position. Motor Storm utilises a variety of vehicles and their strengths and weaknesses such as being able to sneak through narrow ravines on the motorbike, but unable to withstand knocks from rally cars. The crashes are stupendous with vehicle and often rider tumbling through the air to great effect.
PS3
Action
Based on the X Box release Ninja Gaiden Black, Tecmo seems to have taken influence from Hong Kong action movies, Onimusha, the speed of the PS2 Shinobi and the raw power of the PS3 to create an intense action title. Water and fire effects are stunning as our masked one sprints over the waters surface or slices through foes entombed in burning buildings. Combos doesnt really go far enough as opponents are more dissected in air with a samurai sword. Yet quick reflexes are a requisite with some enemies using more modern weapons than the traditional ninja. Puts back the fear into the word boss.
PS3
Platform
Anything that the hand of Studio Ghibli touches screams animated gold and this emotive RPG is no exception. Its the emotional investment in this exquisitely animated adventure that makes it so worthwhile. Miyazaki’s characters seem to almost transcend language and speak from the heart. Unless of course we are just trying to gloss over this being Japanese language… Yet should this fail to make a translation, to miss out on it would surely be the more heinous crime…
PS3
One on One Beat Em Up
Heavy doujin influence to this pretty fight fest with the Heroines looking good for the developers eye for talent. Anime cut scenes, J Pop soundtrack, seamless backgrounds, extravagant specials, not to mention the fine extras that all cry out: for the gamers. Enjoy the eye candy, but be wary of the deeper mechanics this fine flurry of fists has its roots in.
