Super Famicom
Platform
Platform action based on the Dragons Lair characters and capturing all the colourful, cartoony cheer and humour of it adding in the important ingredient of gameplay as players leap from platform to moving platform tossing axes into the mull.
Famicom Cart
Action
Any game with a guest appearance of Genki hero Xandra of Super Famicom Xandra’s Big Adventure fame is worthy of any collection in Genki’s humble opinion. RPG elements in this action title not very well known outside Japan. Catapulting around levels is great fun and saves having to revisit areas of this huge game.
Famicom Cart
Platform
More ninjas than you could shake a stick at as Hattori takes evasive action by heading from the trees as the procession marches through the forest. A shuriken throwing star or two never did any harm to Hattori’s chances of progression either. Good, traditional, staple platforming fun, as Japanese as miso soup.
Famicom Cart
Platform
A solid Famicom platformer made more challenging (to say the least!) By being played as two characters simultaneously. Jumps must be timed to perfection and the male brain at least may suffer a bit of melt down trying to keep an eye on both our gaming heroes as they journey through Tokyo.
Famicom Cart
Action
Scroll the RPG style lands, but instead of stat heavy scraps, players must have a quick trigger finger to shoot down the fairies and dragons that stalk the fantasy lands. Having a sharp eye out for a shield power up helps immensely too.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Good, family Famicom fun as players use their pea shooter like weapon to run amok through the cities (and its sewer system when not quick enough to avoid the tumbling manhole.)
Famicom Cart
Sports
Nicely presented as players sign up to join the golf club and then hit the course with their cheeky caddy in tow. Players shots are viewed from both the third person and overhead perspectives and the game is competent is all aspects.
PS2
Simulation
Tactical battle simulation full of truly super robots utilising the Gundam and Votoms licenses. Players choose their moves and the heaving hulks of metal play out the moves in dramatic fashion with some sleek, retro avatars of the human pilots. Must have for mecha heads.
PS2
RPG
An RPG in the classic mould with beautiful sprites making for a believable gaming world. A well loved series and with such golden plot threads expertly woven into a tapestry worthy of the fine halls which feature within, RPG gurus will lap this up.
PSP
One on One Beat Em Up
The anime’s distinct and sometimes creepy look with lurchingly tall characters has carried over effortlessly and the whole production oozes the sort of vintage claret class you’d expect from the series. Two player tag battles are a joy with what look like extras from Spirited Away but the lightening gameplay gives little opportunity to admire the scenery.
Super Famicom
RPG
Charming RPG that allows players to traverse its many terrains in groups and has off-beat character designs. The graphical effects are impressive to convey the magic spells or even the flight of a dragon across its gaming world. The musical score is top notch too and overall the game very much has its own feel. Also known as Paladins Quest in the West.
Super Famicom
RPG
Small towns in idyllic situations, similar to those in How to Train Your Dragon, are under attack in a game that feels like an ancient buildings version of Sim City with a strategic battle element in dispatching forces including the fabled dragons.
Playstation
Sports
Tecmo remains true to its arcade footballing heritage in this very tidy kick around based on the Japanese top two tier league teams. Flows along very nicely and has its own distinct feel over the more infamous Konami series making it a refreshing departure if not quite as long living.
Nintendo DS
Action
Reminiscent of the seminal Super Famicom ‘Yoshi’s Island’ both in terms of gameplay and pastal shaded graphics, play involves using the stylus to sketch clouds to protect baby Mario.
Merchandise
Magazine
Very professional publication covering the retro scene with info on PC Engine, Saturn, Dreamcast, Playstation, Nintendo, Atari and the Mega Drive amongst others.
PS2
RPG
A data disk to boost the vast size of the online Final Fantasy XI world. Online has taken the series to unimaginable heights when its original, humble roots are considered.
PS2
Simulation
A dating game with roster of ladies to cater for all tastes, for want of a better term. With the girl next door to the feisty foreigner personality, players should find fun and frivolity here. A bizarre ‘osu’ or ‘push’ game sees players having to hit targets rhythm action style to clock up a big score.
PS2
A Bit Special
Besides the baseball, table tennis, boxing and football goalkeeper games, the Eye Toy camera works its magic to get even non-gamers involved in air guitars, kung fu, cooking, yielding a chainsaw, drumming, popping bubbles… Full of innovation and bringing back the fun to gaming.
Playstation
Action
Solid Sony developed 3D title as players take the roll of all action Rosco who piles into towering infernos without a second thought for his safety. An axe is sometimes used to take down hazards, but on the whole its a hose a good supply of water that is needed. Plenty of fun and a good tribute to AM2 being a flattering imitation if in a more cartoony style. Known as Rosco McQueen Firefighter Extreme in the West.
Super Famicom
One on One Beat Em Up
Very fresh visual effects as pugilists are concocted from spheres keeping the action fast with the fighters suppleness. Despite all combatants being composed of spheres there are a good mix of fighters each with their own special moves such as the Bulls charge.
Super Famicom
RPG
Classic RPG action in the Falcom mould. Allows you to avoid multiple HP battles if you so desire. Some pretty cool townsfolk to chat with make this one of the better action RPGs on the Super Famicom, a real accolade.
