PS2
RPG
Supreme, pastel shaded isometric sprites with the lavish game world brought to life. Avatars announce its PS2 status and the voice acting is of a high standard to draw players in to the gaming world. Top notch.
Playstation
Simulation
A Slime breeding game which involves building up the world for these loveable lumps of jelly. Strangely compelling drawing you into their slippery slope like an exotic flower.
Playstation
Simulation
The key to a balanced development is good rail links allowing budding planners to be able to import in the materials needed to build a brimming metropolis and plenty of leisure facilities for the dwellers to unwind in.
Playstation
Sports
The start of the series and its clear how much planning Sony put into making the definitive golf game, just as it did with Gran Turismo and the driving circuit. The course design excels, as does the character design with a colourful roster of players. Fine weather effects and the feel of the great outdoors (albeit a little over-done) to truly refresh like the effect of a stroll round eighteen holes would have.
Nintendo 64
Sports
The Powerful Pro series has been a long-standing podium success in Konami’s sporting teams CV. The graphical style endears itself well to the player, yet the simple to pick up, trickier to master play mechanics combine old school SNK sports titles with the moves needed to build up a whole dome full of dedicated fans. Definitely more Tokyo Giants than Nippon Ham.
Famicom Cart
Platform
A fitting tribute to a fine story due to the amount of unregulated fun and adventure in the game. The rafting sections are superb: firing at flying frogs, avoiding whirlpools and grabbing power ups. The platform sections can look a little rudimentary at times, but gameplay innovations such as being able to take to the skies with feet wrapped in fluffy cloud; turning the action into a side on shooter. Genki just fears the appearance of Injun Joe.
Super Famicom
Sports
A snazzy Bob Smith introduces the action in digitised form as the on ice action positively zips along. The play area has been squashed up a bit, but it works well in terms of being able to spot a pass as the puck zips along from end to end.
Super Famicom
Action
Desert Strike caused quite a storm when released with its tight controls and excellent mission based gameplay from taking out power stations to rescuing POW, you really felt the power of the chopper to make a difference. Completing a level rewarded a mini sequence of politically charged cinematics. The final level required various briefings to be completed in the one mission and having gone through so much hard work the fear of being shot down was overwhelming.
Super Famicom
RPG
Improves the visuals of Secret of the Mana to an exquisite standard whilst tidying up the AI of party members to make group movement more responsive. And that party can be made up of your standard RPG fare members but may also include imaginative additions such as a werewolf or Amazonian native. Mind you the whole gaming world is teeming with creative creatures and intriguing comrades imploring you to delve deeper and discover more. Thankfully the real time battle system remains firmly intact as it certainly wasn’t broke.
GameBoy Original
Puzzle
A rather neat puzzle title where shapes must be matched up in fours with the top score (and some fine visual pyrotechnics to celebrate) being reached via matching up all seventy two shapes. Different options on offer in terms of shapes to use for those spooked by the traditional stones.
Playstation
A Bit Special
Features Pac Man, multi-directional shooter Bosconian, Galaga, Rally X, Rally X New, arcade puzzler Toypop and Pole Position. Galga is most fondly remembered for the tractor beam that can capture your ship and for the frantic bonus stages that put the pride back into high scores. Rally X has solid, old school gameplay behind the simplistic graphics which sees you picking up flags using smoke screens to distract the opposition. Complete with scans of the original arcade posters and photo’s of the motherboards. Games can also be played vertically as initially intended.
PS3
Action
Immortalised by the line ‘You are already dead’ and Kenshiro’s lightning fast attacks, the post-apocalyptic world of North Star was one of the first animes released in the West. Think of a cartoon Mad Max where you meet adversaries and more often than not, their heads explode. Koei gets nasty and heads roll with their multi character mechanics working a treat in a top, top license.
Soundtracks
Soundtrack
A fine foray through the Mega Drive releases of Thunderforce II, II and IV. Some scintillating arrange versions. Captures the frantic fury of the seminal STG series. Sadly the Techno Soft Store in now defunct.
Merchandise
Merchandise
The Pokemon phenomena knows no abating with the range of monsters ensuring it continues to innovate. The anime is strongly linked to the video games, no doubt helping to fuel its success. This tいn is a well crafted bonus gift, no doubt to gain admiring glances where ever it may be seen.
Playstation
Simulation
Sprightly puzzle game where tiles must be rotated to clear the screen: much easier in practise than words. Adopts various styles to the game view be it the dynastic classical Chinese mahjong tiles, fantasy role playing medieval style or playing cards on the beach setting.
Playstation
A Bit Special
The mini Puru Puru disk has Jumping Flash, AIV, Tekken 2, Arc the Lad 2, Tokyo Insect Zoo, Tokimeki Memorial and even the Ridge Rcaer Devil Car. The Demo Demo Disk Ultimate Parodius, Raiden Project and Philsoma of interest to fans of what the Japanese call the STG genre along with plenty of other samples.
Playstation
A Bit Special
Plenty to warm the cockles in this winter feast of PSX gaming with demos of SF Zero 3, Ehrgeiz, Tales of Phantasia, Bomberman and Crash Bandicoot 3 amongst ten others.
Dreamcast
Rhythm
Real bumper Dreamcast Edition featuring the tracks from the original plus the second mix. Its not all cheese though with some real foot tapping, toe twisting tracks.
Super Famicom
Sports
A brilliant conversion of the Neo Geo classic that can be best recommended as a baseball game good enough even if you’re not interested in the sport. Various android competitors compete including a ‘Smash’ robot. A few no balls will see them ready to blow a gasket, but a well connected hit will bring all the ott celebrations you’d expect from an SNK design sports title.
Super Famicom
RPG
A fine RPG with plenty of game references in the Super Famicom controller which appears in one of the many locales and in game characters called Akihabara. Its hard not to see the 16 Bit era as one of the golden ones for RPGs, especially on the Super Famicom. And Enix use all their experience to cut loose and add some humour to their fine RPG engine.
Gamecube
One on One Beat Em Up
Outstanding graphical talent must make opponents of the Naruto series despair, such is the flair which the fox spirited ninja and accomplices are realised. And the graphical flavour really excels in four player mode – if only there was more time to appreciate it. The multiplayer grapples work well with the addition of auto targeting missing from Guilty Gear and ilk that really makes it workable. The game engine has been under scrutiny too with combos more rounded and the additional ability to keep an adversary in the air with a few additional well-timed strikes. The counter moves to diffuse an opposing technique also add to the tactical nous required to flourish in this ninja world. But the super specials remain in there with devastating effect.
