Super Famicom
One on One Beat Em Up
Popular fighter due to its over the top explosions with huge dust clouds and special moves with lasers the size of bridges. The evasive aspect of gameplay is good fun too with the split screen action whizzing along like a projectile in terms of pacing. The source material is well captured too with some unusual pugilists.
Super Famicom
Sports
The FMV of the title stands for Frontier Martial-arts Wrestling a Japanese predecessor to the like of K1. Four of the crew are taken from the FMW line up, the rest of the roster is made up from a motley crew of punch bags for the real wrestlers to go to town on. Background interactions add an element of the unknown into the sweaty equation, such as when random explosions put paid to plans of executing a clothes line. Nice selection of moves to be executed by the joypad dexterous.
Super Famicom
Puzzle
Pretty in pink sums up much of the Sailor Moon world and this block based puzzler is no exception. Nice animation to the players whose rivalry positively crackles with electricity across the screen. Either clear your screen or wait for you opponent to fill up in this snappy puzzle tie in. Full title: Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon S Kondo wa Puzzle de Oshioki yo.
XBOX 360
One on One Beat Em Up
Seemingly having done a lot of homework, Arc System Works infuse their Guilty Gear skills along with Akiba, sleek styling, gothic, Harajuku fashion, huge scaled opponents of the quintessential Capcom, Saturn era classic X Men, even what looks like a ghost from Miyazaki’s Spirited Away. The depth in detail to the backgrounds with exquisite lighting is a sight to behold. But the all important engine, where fight titles are swept mercilessly to the floor or soar with a flying foot into the opposition, has been honed with the teams years of experience.
XBOX 360
One on One Beat Em Up
Realistic approach to the eternally youthful street fighting series with the pugilists looking more like a Western designed PVC figurine, if that makes sense. The stages are superb: those dim sums look delicious in Chun Li’s stage. Well oiled play mechanics from the king of the ring Capcom.
XBOX 360
One on One Beat Em Up
Arc keeps the 2D torch burning bright as this illuminating fight fest celebrates all that is good in the genre. Akiba fashion culture permeates every pore, so much so you may wonder if it was developed in a maid café as a post club venue after the AKB48 concert. A fine celebration of joypad dexterity and visual pyrotechnics.
XBOX 360
One on One Beat Em Up
Warming the cockles of side on scrapper starved gamers comes the sequel to the anime expose to satisfy the most demanding of fight fans. The all female cast is reminiscent of the seminal Asuka series, but unfortunately such high-res graphics were never a possibility on the humble PC Engine. Presentation is spot on with a wee nod to the doujin fan and a fine story mode with pre-bout banter between the cat like ladies. The title comes from the Arcana power which is chosen to help each character get through the bout. Great to see the ladies are still doing it in 2D. Keep them coming we requested and our pleas have been answered.
PS Vita
Rhythm
The Hatsune Miku series continues to whirl round the gaming community like a cyclone effecting fashion amongst its many followers. This Vita update version allows players to super impose the games delightful characters into real photos for some fun effects. But is the rhythm action that has never looked so finely honed.
PSP
One on One Beat Em Up
Due to the game not supporting online play, this cunning pack comes with two copies of the game. So a gaming buddy has no excuse for not getting a good pasting. Looking very glitzy on the small screen full of neon and lushly shaded characters that would surely win any anime con.
Figures
Figure
Coming as a real treat for fans of the loveable rogue Lupin are these two well crafted PVC figures. Its nice that manufacturers reward preorder customers with such goodies, especially when of such high quality. Lupins charm and cheek shines through with Fujiko san looking typically stylish.
Famicom Cart
Action
Collect the money whilst avoiding ninjas made far more appealing by Sunsoft’s imagination: daikon and lantern power ups as well as the appearance of a rather rough looking geisha of questionable gender to be avoided at all costs. Classic Famicom material of gameplay over graphics.
Super Famicom
One on One Beat Em Up
Requiring no introduction. The game that ignited the 16 Bit world and made a killing for importers at the time. As such worthy of a place in any collection. Thankfully the price has dropped somewhat too. With such brilliant characterisation, attention to detail and finely honed play mechanics its easy to see how Street Fighter swept the world. Subtitled the World Warrior.
Famicom Cart
One on One Beat Em Up
Whilst Genki may be more like the bowtie wearing and rather rotund referee, we certainly appreciate the sharp skills needed to be able to land the moves as this mixed martial arts fest takes to the ring. A small target appears on the opponents body as to where the hit will land in order to give the pugilists a chance to block and counter making for good, tactical bouts.
Famicom Cart
Action
Quick thinking is a requisite as the floor shifts into different tiles meaning new, jelly baby like enemies warping in or players sliding helplessly across the level. Thankfully sonic booms style attacks can ward of the interest of the on screen adversaries, at least for a temporary respite, in the quest to clear the screen. Known as Mendel Palace in the West.
Famicom Cart
Action
The Konami cracker gets a Famicom work out as Hudson bring home the bacon big time. Players take on the role of a pig on a winch lift and move up and down to fire arrows at the wolves descending on balloons. Popping their balloons makes them fall to the ground, but if they float down they start to gather near the poor piggies lift. A simple premise, badly explained and playing extremely well.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Light puzzle elements, such as moving blocks across to make a set of spikes safe, in this platform conversion of a manga in the Doraemon mould. Nothing too taxing making for an enjoyable gaming experience with some bizarre goings on for those unfamiliar (and even familiar) with the source material.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Shaolin style RPG as players journey through ancient China with plenty to chances to kick and punch, as the title translates. Many bouts ensue, however they all start with a bow. Respectful gaming tranquillity in a quiet corner of the Famicom.
Famicom Cart
Shooter
Stylish gangster shooter with the whiff of prohibition in the air along with plenty of gunpowder. The players gun is represented by a cursor and moving through the city makes for a hazardous occupation as reprobates take pot shots at you. Nice animations warn of imminent danger and it make s worthy tribute to a tidy coin op.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Enjoyable platformer with the look of Mother 2 to the character and a nice gamepaly twist in being able to walk into the screen to visit shops and the like. An umbrella works a treat for extending jumps, for example.
Famicom Cart
Action
Simple puzzle based platform sections with the odd switch combined with an unusual, turn based battle sections. Kamen Rider has a cult following and it does certainly have an abundance of characters in latex.
Famicom Cart
RPG
A role player set in a feudal Japan of temples, samurai and giant cat fish with human faces. Players traverse the landscape getting into the odd scrape with a grizzly bear or two.
