Famicom Cart
One on One Beat Em Up
Whilst Genki may be more like the bowtie wearing and rather rotund referee, we certainly appreciate the sharp skills needed to be able to land the moves as this mixed martial arts fest takes to the ring. A small target appears on the opponents body as to where the hit will land in order to give the pugilists a chance to block and counter making for good, tactical bouts.
Famicom Cart
Action
Quick thinking is a requisite as the floor shifts into different tiles meaning new, jelly baby like enemies warping in or players sliding helplessly across the level. Thankfully sonic booms style attacks can ward of the interest of the on screen adversaries, at least for a temporary respite, in the quest to clear the screen. Known as Mendel Palace in the West.
Famicom Cart
Action
The Konami cracker gets a Famicom work out as Hudson bring home the bacon big time. Players take on the role of a pig on a winch lift and move up and down to fire arrows at the wolves descending on balloons. Popping their balloons makes them fall to the ground, but if they float down they start to gather near the poor piggies lift. A simple premise, badly explained and playing extremely well.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Light puzzle elements, such as moving blocks across to make a set of spikes safe, in this platform conversion of a manga in the Doraemon mould. Nothing too taxing making for an enjoyable gaming experience with some bizarre goings on for those unfamiliar (and even familiar) with the source material.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Shaolin style RPG as players journey through ancient China with plenty to chances to kick and punch, as the title translates. Many bouts ensue, however they all start with a bow. Respectful gaming tranquillity in a quiet corner of the Famicom.
Famicom Cart
Shooter
Stylish gangster shooter with the whiff of prohibition in the air along with plenty of gunpowder. The players gun is represented by a cursor and moving through the city makes for a hazardous occupation as reprobates take pot shots at you. Nice animations warn of imminent danger and it make s worthy tribute to a tidy coin op.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Enjoyable platformer with the look of Mother 2 to the character and a nice gamepaly twist in being able to walk into the screen to visit shops and the like. An umbrella works a treat for extending jumps, for example.
Famicom Cart
Action
Simple puzzle based platform sections with the odd switch combined with an unusual, turn based battle sections. Kamen Rider has a cult following and it does certainly have an abundance of characters in latex.
Famicom Cart
RPG
A role player set in a feudal Japan of temples, samurai and giant cat fish with human faces. Players traverse the landscape getting into the odd scrape with a grizzly bear or two.
Famicom Cart
Action
Dig through the mazes utilising warps and power ups to clear the section, plus the odd blast from the laser gun. Full title: ‘Hottaman no Chitei Tanken.’
Famicom Cart
Action
Players charge through ancient Japan in snow filled ravines and craggy cliffs s represented in the RPG exploration style map and also in the action sequences which are side on fight sections requiring a swift sword slice and dispatch of a handful of shurikens. Makes a good change for those jaded by stat heavy fight sequences.
Famicom Cart
Action
That famous tune belts out on the chip set and stirs Superman into platform based action. Power ups are used to add to the hero’s special powers. But progress is hard when turned into the weaker Clark Kent, looking very much a salaryman.
Famicom Cart
Platform
The versatile Ropitto robot negotiates the platforms nicely warping between sections and firing off a few volleys to keep unwanted attention at bay. Once taken out, players continue as the boy who controls Ropitto. Subtitled ‘2100 no Daibouken.’
Famicom Cart
Action
A lack of shadowing does make avoiding some of the hazards across the castle a bit haphazard for our young samurai. But the levels are well set out and Irem have designed an impressive set of depth to this action based title. Known in the West as Deadly Towers.
Famicom Cart
Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
Sharp reflexes and a knowledge of when to fire in a fist of fury or a flat kung fu slipper sole are requisites to meet the bad boss Mr X. Ducking kicks and throwing stars in the classic arcade mould. Known as Kung Fu Master in the West.
Famicom Cart
Action
Milon dons his night cap and blows a few bubbles at enemies as he scales up the castles platforms. Secret doors and breaking walls can reveal hidden routes and surprises. Good, solid platforming fun. Apart from the crumbling ones… Known in Japan as ‘Meikyuu Kumikyoku Miron no Daibouken.’
Soundtracks
Soundtrack
A pre order gift for those lovers of the Atlus series buying the 3DS version. Atlus enhances its reputation for fine game art with some stylish brush strokes, even by its high standards. The tracks are as easy on the ear as its art is on the eye too.
Soundtracks
Soundtrack
A small art booklet plus soundtrack featuring five tracks, plus the opening theme tune plus comments by the various stars of the adventure. Nicely presented in a small file.
PS Vita
One on One Beat Em Up
Here is the formula: play as a pretty lady with some serious weaponry, such as pigtails with rotating blades. Clear a small section of the stage by taking on hordes of adversaries, often fellow ladies. Progress through the level to meet the boss. Power up and reveal (via an anime sequence) a skimpier outfit and seemingly boosting your stats other than your vital stats. Give boss a good beating and cause her to lose items of clothing (again via anime sequences.) Defeat boss, end level. Stylishly done with a real aplomb and an appreciation of the mass market as much as the doujin title. Hats off (and not just to protect the boss’ modesty.)
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Simulation
Players must keep a clear mind and a good set of tiles in order to avoid a return to their birthday suit. A well liked series in Japan with some tidy graphics and nicely presented.
PSP
Puzzle
An action puzzle title at its base element with devious gameplay that sees players utilising their full complement of ninjas to keep switches pressed, opponents in battle or lanterns lit whilst your other ninja sneaks past. The stylisation is immense in a traditional Hokusai woodprint style with graphics befitting a screen in a Kyoto temple. Well worth a look.
