Famicom Cart
Platform
A fun journey into old school platforming as Jack whizzes through the bomb laden levels and bonus sections. Works well on the Famicom and brings plenty of fun to the party: an oft forgotten ingredient in some modern gaming pies.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Keen Genki devotees will be well aware of our obsession with oriental ghosts and plenty pop up in this unusual RPG which sees the young Akuma lock horns with the ones he is unable to sneak past.
Mega CD
Simulation
Deep and involving strategy battle game in a similar vein to Masters of Monsters. Demands dedication from the player, but rewards well with sparkling Sega polish on the massive gaming engine. Plenty of characters to select and being able to shape them adds to the attraction. A sprawling epic.
Nintendo DS
RPG
A real triple A title that brings to mind the delights of Goemons romps with a feudal Japan setting. The graphical look is innovative and feels like an animated New Years greetings card with such delightful execution. Played as the young wolf setting out on an epic adventure which we would hate to ruin. A real treat for lone wolfs from start to finish and worthy of higher accolades.
Famicom Cart
RPG
The graphics are colourful and the roots are firmly in the old school with limited health to bring out the very best in gamers. The shops add a great incentive to risk all to grab that extra power up.
Famicom Cart
Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
A long standing series unlike Genki when surrounded by the thugs in the game who soon gang up on those initially lacking the necessary martial skills. Yet the games appeal is strong as players meet plenty of characters on their way through the platform levels on to a showdown with the big boss. Playing like Double Dragon on platform levels makes for an interesting twist on the side scrolling beat em up.
Famicom Cart
Action
Goemon has to be Genki’s fave series as our star visits towns and captures alot of the Japanese spirit in them. The superb action sequences purvey the pure class of the developer. This small cart packs alot of punch.
Famicom Cart
Action
Players bop opponents utilising their martial skills in this ancient Chinese themed action title to try and clear the screen. Plenty of cliches in the hatchet men who attack and backgrounds, but it has its own style as such. Fun bonus levels too.
Famicom Cart
Action
Builds on the classic tunnel digging coin op cracker by this time using a harpoon to lance adversaries before bizarrely pumping them up. Players must be wary of the terrain collapsing around them though: no doubt due to too much tunnelling below. Got to keep on pumping it up: I like it.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Set in a Japanese flavoured hell like world, Tarosuke must try and find his way past spooky, limbless ghouls and angry devils to meet King Enma with nothing more for sustenance than hell rice bowls and steamed buns.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Puzzle of Atlantis is a definite Super Mario tribute complete with warps and all, but the developers have also taken note of the talent behind the level design in Mario and playtested the levels to hone the playing field to a well balanced challenge.
Famicom Cart
Shoot Em Up
Vertically scrolling shooter but requires you to keep an eye on the ground with a bomb option too. Distinctive graphical style works well on the Famicom.
Famicom Cart
Action
The sort of title that works a treat as Nyamcot (as the cat crooks of the game would say) brings its vintage arcade formula to the Famicom. Players star as a wee mouse that must retrieve stolen goods from the platform levels with the help of trampolines from the bad cats. Pairing up hot goods results in a higher score and adds an extra tactical dimension to the gameplay. A real cult classic.
Famicom Cart
Action
Players chip away at the blocks of ice forming the platforms to make their way up the screen to get to the top before savouring the bonus level. A tactical ice mallet puts paid to anyone trying to stop you enjoy the view. Classic gaming from the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Fine sequel in a series of right and breezy platformers which were also further developed into a 16Bit platformer with bold, colourful characters full of well animated expression. Recommended to fans of the platform genre with lovely, uncluttered sprites making for refreshing gameplay. Subtitles Mahou Daibouken or Magical Adventure.
Famicom Cart
Shooter
Run and gun action as players charge into the screen avoiding the pillar boxes, motorbikes and hand grenades as everything including the kitchen sink gets thrown at you to prevent your advance. Its hard not to warm to such gameplay with simple objectives and nothing to blame but your own lack of skill (and possibly army training) for not progressing and meeting the mission goal.
Playstation
Simulation
NEC cut its dating sim teeth on the PC FX and this Playstation release continues in that distinctive and knowledgeable style with a band of fair ladies full of fun to vry for the attentions of the gamer. Be wary of trying to juggle too many eggs though.
Playstation
Puzzle
Take on the Puyo Puyo master plan where players align four of the same coloured bug eyed balls with saccharine sweet characters and plenty of cutesy sound effects. Does actually add to the genre though and is a well respected series.
Playstation
Puzzle
Puyo Puyo is Japanese onomatopoeia for something soft to touch, referring to the jelly like balls that fall from the sky to be aligned with similar colours in this saccharine soaked, kawaii puzzler. Highly accomplished version which was re-released to introduce its polished gameplay to the PS2 crew.
Playstation
A Bit Special
A delve into coin ops of old with Galaxian, Pole Position II, Ms. Pac Man, Dig Dug, Phozon and Tower of Druaga. Phozon is a bit of a bizarre and unknown action puzzler where shapes must be attached to you ship in the correct pattern whilst avoiding a big bunch of balloons.
Playstation
Platform
Genki may be going soft, but we miss the day when you could find a safe spot on the screen and simply blast away until the boss destructs. With a slight pang towards a greater challenge, these bad boys demand not only full attention to weak spots, but also to keeping an eye on the platforms to avoid tumbling to boss rush purgatory. Rats!
