Combining easy pick up and play mechanics with a slick passing system, it took the patience of a Dutch master to be able to fully manipulate players to perform deft overhead flicks and inch perfect through balls. But the real thrill came in being able to recognise the stars of the world game for the first time in front of your very eyes. The pass master, the original.

Beast battling game with quite a legion of followers in Japan so it is with some pride Nintendo bring it to the Wii. Its easy to see why though with expertly rendered ogres to lay into with precision planned armouries all looking very easy on the eye and making the very most of the hardware. Oozes with the Capcom polish of a triple A release.

Akira Toriyama once again uses his DragonBall drawing skills to sublime effect in working in tandem with some of the brawn behind the Final Fantasy series to bring us a Japanese flavoured action RPG with plenty of spiky hair and bush eyed creatures. The action is true to their long held design principles and there arent too many surprises along the way, but this adds to the warm, secure feeling of being in deep in the cosy RPG world. Tidy sub quests and completion lists for monsters and items add much to the overall quest.

A small joystick which is manipulated to produce the special moves of the famous fight series and successfully pulling off the move rewards with an authentic sampled shout. Its possible to hone your fight skills in the lift or even on the train, but excessive use may require putting the specials into practise.

One on One Beat Em Up
Not quite wrestling, not boxing – no holds seem barred either in this encaged grapple fest. Plenty of modes of play and makes good use of the license, even down to the ability to edit your player. Still even without changing your man there are some brutal looking bruisers to choose from.

Plays like an anime version of The Water Margin, no surprise seeing as the original source material is based on Chinese legend. Action RPG with quick fix combat and very stylised, watercolour characters offering advice with big beards and rotund figures. Highly competent and full of katakana text sound effects making it play like a live manga strip.

Set in a hammed up seventies kung fu movie, players have to exhibit their kanji (or Chinese character) prowess rather than any praying mantis forms. The stylus is used to write the hiragana reading of characters, the kanji of hiragana words or even identify the correct radical. So its definitely a study aid, but a very well executed one with plenty of style and tight character recognition.

More of the madcap mayhem that made the prequel such a popular title with plenty of bizarre inhabitants as the giant ball engulfs all that it can rolling around Japanese towns all wondrously realised in the games unique style. Not just towns though – a school, ski resort, even the bottom of a lake keep things fresh and innovative. Tactical additions to gameplay such as having to race your katamari or having to become a giant fireball through collecting wood and rubber. Known in English as We Love Katamari.

Bringing the mahjong mass market to Western players is worthy of commendation and allows gamers to access the vast array of Japan only mahjong titles. The strangely zen meditative properties of clearing the on screen titles is a very enjoyable Sunday afternoon pastime. Independently produced Dreamcast title.

Japan exclusive title with realistic graphics produced using motion capture technology. Includes the twelve top Japanese Professional teams with their full squads: even down to the mascots so players can savour Giants vs Tigers match ups. Some hyped up commentary helps to crank up the pressure with bases loaded and Konami’s experience in the genre with the Powerful Pro Yakyuu series shines through.

A superb concept and it works like a treat as players expertly use cooking chopsticks to deliver and flip slices of meat and vegetables to hungry punters. The meat sizzles away and the sound effects are very authentic so you can almost smell the beef grilling over the hot coals making for a great pre dinner blast. Customers chatter away but burnt meat or slow service will soon have their satisfaction meter tumbling down. Theres a great array of clients though but harder levels reveal a gaggle of fussy gourmet diners.

One on One Beat Em Up
Mixed martial arts groups are very popular and Pride is the appropriately named leader of the pack. Plenty of footage to get you in the mood with the music and announcer cranking up the tension, pugilists stroll out as player characters as they would in a real bout. A wealth of camera angles ensures not a single feint is missed with intelligent switching as the action progresses and you land on your opponent with a sharp knee. Brutal but mightily impressive and essential for fans of the movement.
