A Bit Special
J Pop all girl quartet Mini Moni get involved in some Konami capers with a variety of mini games such as paper, scissors, stone, rhythm action dancing sections and skipping where timing is crucial. Nothing too taxing but perfect for a quick laugh with solid Konami play mechanics under the candy sweet exterior.
Playstation
Sports
Full of the rough and tumble atmosphere of the Shinto sport as the referee bellows away with wood print style cel shaded graphics. As in the real sport getting a good start is imperative as you gamble on one of the buttons to begin and launch off your haunches. Matches are decide by a knock down or ring out with timing of the button bashing assault being all important.
Playstation
A Bit Special
Plenty of fun mini games make this a great after hours title with punk penguins Rocky and Hopper.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
RPG
Contains two playable demos of about one hour of Tengai Makyo II (including the lavish introduction sequence as well) and about two hours of Dragon Slayer. Nice little sample of two very good RPG’s.
Playstation
Simulation
Excellent characterisation and Konami’s slick presentation ensured this became a massive title in Japan that was followed up on the PS2. Colourful ‘Kappa’ green disk.
Miscellaneous Games
Simulation
Mahjong on the Mark III with some superb characters to enliven the action.
Dreamcast
Rhythm
Off beat spin off of the Beatmania series with a unique cartoony style masking the challenge lying beneath the surface of this add on disk. Toe tapping, reflex sharpening fun which is very hard to put down.
Playstation
A Bit Special
Contains two real gems from Sunsoft’s back catalogue: Ikki and Super Arabian. In Ikki you must collect the money whilst avoiding ninjas – made far more appealing by Sunsoft’s imagination: daikon and latern power ups as well as the appearance of a rather rough looking geisha of questionable gender to be avoided at all costs. In Super Arabian letters must be collected to form a word and clear the Middle Eastern themed level. Simple, yet fiendish: classic old school material of gameplay over graphics.
Playstation
Sports
Graphically simplistic tennis game neatly drop shoting the polygon heavy approach for a more playable full screen affair. Rally potential aplenty with plenty of venues and characters to choose from.
Playstation
Simulation
The third release in the series with dark anime overtones and imaginative vehicles adding much atmosphere to the air based war simulation proceedings.
PS2
A Bit Special
Three beautiful women to capture on film including an F1 flag girl, but clever and well taken shots are required to befriend the models before other paparazzi manage to do so.
Super Famicom
Sports
Side perspective football game with top tier teams and PK mode seen from both keepers and strikers perspective. Fabulous four player scraps are possible with a multitap and the game is also Barcode Battler II compatible, so get scanning those cans of Baked Beans.
Sega Saturn
Shooter
Giant robot themed first person shooter in which you take on the Ghen race out in space. Plenty of cheesy FMV with a few switches thrown in to keep you on your toes.
PS2
Action
Samurai themed action slicer set in feudal Japan from the crack Capcom break away unit Game Republic. Captures the essence of the period beautifully in the graphics, musical score and presentation and shows great promise from those old Onimusha hands.
PS2
Sports
As with each update Konami has worked hard on its game to improve and cement its position as league leader. The instantly recognisable stars of the modern game look more detailed than ever. Opponent AI makes the series’ rivals look like clod hopping donkeys. But it is in providing the raw clay for the player to craft unique goals that deserves the highest praise – never channelling strikers down the same avenue to goal.
Playstation
Shooter
SNK truly mastered the ability to produce fun games in 2D such as Metal Slug which reminded the gaming cognoscenti there was life and gameplay without polygons. Pure refined game mechanics to bring a smile to the face of the most grizzled gaming veteran.
