Action
A huge license in Japan based on the classic manga. You play the role of Mr. Saeba – a bit of a Japanese bond, fond of both ladies and firearms. Good advise would be to keep em peeled for the helpful nurse on each level. Reminiscent of Rolling Thunder in parts. Brought back for the modern era thanks to a fabulous live-action film on Netflix.

It is some roster to be able to plunder for SNK – a veritable booty of treasure. The ninth slice of paradise weighs in with some big hitters: The King of Fighters 2001, Fatal Fury 3, Samurai Shodown 2, Super Sidekicks 3, King of the Monsters, Magician Road, World Heroes, Fighters History Dynamite, Magical Drop 2 and Dunk Dream.

Classic Famicom material of gameplay over graphics, now given the graphics to match the gameplay thanks to this Switch conversion. Collect the money whilst avoiding ninjas made far more appealing by Sunsoft’s imagination: daikon and lantern power ups as well as the appearance of a rather rough looking geisha of questionable gender.

Shoot Em Up
R Type tread boldly into the unknown world of 3D in its Playstation incarnation and delivered superb graphical gee whizz to go with luscious lighting effects. The weapons system uses auto targeting which can be a real blessing when things are starting to get a bit hairy. The revamping of the game shows what a seminal release it was.

The colossus SNK back catalogue is the gift that keeps on giving with no let up in quality as we hit the fifth instalment. The retro roster reads The King of Fighters 2002, Art of Fighting 2, Real Bout Garou Densetsu, Twinkle Star Sprites, Slash Rally, Burning Fight, Aggressors of Dark Kombat, Sonic Wings 2, Super Sidekicks and Cyberlip. The Future is now!

Another mighty fine delve from Superdeluxe into Castlevania’s dank dungeons coming up trumps with the much-sought after GameBoy Advance versions. Pixel-perfect platforming action awaits those pure of heart and with iron will.

This sixth instalment features: The King of Fighters 98, Samurai Spirits III, Real Bout Garou Densetsu Special, Last Blade 2, Over Top, Ultimate 11, Football Frenzy, Sengoku Densetsu 2001, Sonic Wings 3 and Operation Ragnarok (aka Zed Blade.)

The original D represented a key period in gaming history before the 3DO went critical, without which would we have had Silent Hill or Biohazard? Kenji Eno san delves into the dreaded “Interactive Movie” genre but the results are incomparable to early Mega CD releases. Disturbed and depraved survival horror from the Canadian outlands.

Puzzle
An unusual puzzle game for the WS in which players have to prove themselves worthy to their father by negotiating the maze levels that feature five hazards trying to get you. The hazards vary but the best we can mention are being attacked by armpit hair or by mucus from a dripping nose. Charmingly fun.

Board game sequel to the colourful capers of the pirate crew with players each trying to outwit the others to find it to the treasure – loved by pirates everywhere. Pretty animation and plenty of work has gone into this worthy sequel that has been refined but is more of the fine formula.

Thankfully not a doorman simulator, but there are a few cauliflower ears dished out as you grapple various assailants all gorgeously rendered in a Square stylie. Also in another Square trait you can teach comrades various fighting moves in a trade off for hard earned experience points gained through giving out fat lips.

Konami’s cult Mirumo world looking mighty fine on the Playstation with four adventure quests to savour full of brightly drawn fairies, luscious green backdrops and plinky plonky chip tunes matched and blended perfectly to the in quest action.

Graphically simplistic tennis game neatly drop shoting the polygon heavy approach for a more playable full screen affair. Rally potential aplenty with plenty of venues and characters to choose from. Four player matches can bring up language reminiscent of a Connors McEnroe match up.

Sydney olympic champion Ms. Naoko Takahashi brings her running attributes to the PS2 in this strangely compelling marathon game. Plenty of options to play around with including player stats and courses in what remains an under populated genre.

Puzzle
The buildings demolition business may be under represented in the console world but there remains a bed partner to Biru Baku in Bomber Hehhe on the Dreamcast. Gameplay involves using the limited amount of TNT efficiently enough to take down the building – a case of planning and placing dynamite in the right formation. Its possible to move back a couple of spots in order to correct poorly planned moves – that is before the big plunger gets pressed. Battle mode allows multi-player match ups with the first to take the building down winning the kudos. There is also a challenge mode which requires players to keep within the strict time limits, though using less moves or sticks of dynamite rewards the demolition expert with a few precious extra seconds for the next level. Part of the ‘Neo Trance Puzzle Game’ genre according to the cover.

Platform
Lovely artwork, low Japanese sales and the popularity of the GameCube versions has made Super Metroid quite a collectable. Yet it wouldn’t be right to leave this on the shelf with such carefully crafted gameplay. A truly expansive gaming area full of hidden pockets only accessible when suitably powered up, but the map keeps you right. Atmospherics other titles can only dream about. A true Nintendo classic.

One on One Beat Em Up
Plenty of foxy female protagonists going tete a tete in the Pretty Fighter 2D mould each trying to be the champ (with a side bet on the highest hemline.) Popular enough to be found on the PC Engine and Saturn as well with PSX updates.

Shoot Em Up
Battle Garegga, Feveron, Kingdom Granprix plus Ketsui with the M2 gadget feature gives even the most grizzled shoot em up veterans plenty to get their teeth into, providing they remove the grenade pin in there already. The PS4 seems to have taken on the Xbox 360s mantle of master of shooters.
NEO GEO CD
One on One Beat Em Up
A patriotic American wrestler called Eagle, an overweight policeman called Gordon and a gymnast called Carol who tosses medicine balls at you from out of her hair – it could only be Savage Reign. Interactive backgrounds including a go kart that’ll knock you down if you lurk in the rear too long. The Genki fave has to be the Chinese Chun Li tribute stage, though we doubt Capcom enjoyed it as much.

Masses of Japanese, American and European cars to choose from each with unique handling as Sega steers away from its arcade rally races and gets realistic in this Gran Turismo style racing game. Good graphical attention to detail seen for example in the whirl of red light left behind when a car jams on the anchors at night.
