Sega Saturn
Stimulation
Love simulation game from KID – experts in the field. Sizzling enough to warrant a Red Label adults only warning.
Sega Saturn
Action
Madcap mayhem with up to eight players competing for dominance in the various off the wall mini games. Makes great use of the light gun and mouse which not many titles can claim. Fun variation between the games too making this well worthy of a place in a collection needing something other than smooth 2D fighters and blister inducing shooters.
Sega Saturn
RPG
The game’s story involves the pursuit of a demon who has kidnapped one of the team’s younger brothers. The team includes bespectacled Westerner Charlie Watts whose dodgy attempts at communication in Japanese far exceed the Genki team’s best efforts!
Sega Saturn
RPG
An alternate evil world existing alongside our own is the setting for this evil adventure from Hudson Soft. Crammed on to two disks.
Sega Saturn
Puzzle
Super deformed Ultraman and pals themed puzzler in which you must align capsules to make a chain. Some very satisfying combos possible in a game that slowly gets its hooks into you as you get used to the unusual, yet refreshing, style.
Sega Saturn
Puzzle
Gameplay is similar to the ‘Puzzle Bobble’ series from Taito therefore not recommending itself to the colour blind gamer. The usual array of cute, super deformed, fantasy characters to choose from. Two player is where Magical Drop excels. The English name on the cover is Chain Reaction.
Sega Saturn
One on One Beat Em Up
Final part of the series on the Saturn sees strides made to improve the play mechanics over Vampire Hunter and includes the exquisite death moves. Incredibly fluid animation with Capcom squeezing out every iota from the Saturn and Ram cart to bring the arcade experience home.
Sega Saturn
RPG
Refreshing European style take on the stragtegic RPG, especially as done from a Japanese developer’s perspective. Great attention to detail as troops shout before attacking.
Sega Saturn
Shooter
Claustrophobic answer to Kileak the Blood on the Playstation as the dytopic future is invested with plenty of firepower from the mechas armoury. The first person, cockpit view from the mech works a treat and adds to the tension with nice attention to detail as interference affects the monitor view.
🏆Brilliant!
Brilliant Famicom Cart
Platform
The Nyankies instead of Yankees comes from the sound a cat makes in Japanese. Captures a cheesy Eighties feel with ease as the cat heroes swing through downtown Manhattan. The game is full of innovative touches such as hoover feet and being able to grab on to platforms, Bionic Commando style. Known as Rockin Kats in the West and also abbreviated to NY Nyankies.
Mega Drive
Sports
Open freeways with freedom of choice in the route to take, at least for those in control of the car enough when the fork in the road comes around. Highways are all set in different countries this time adding to the variety as you kick back with the radio blaring out and wind through your hair. Also has two player option.
Mega Drive
One on One Beat Em Up
From the glory era of the initial Street fighter II craze that swept the console world came a slick Sega produced scrapper. Introduced a special moves bar that prevents crafty combatants from hammering the special moves too much. So a few combos practised down the training dojo may be the order of the day. Pays great attention to detail with stages having a special finishing move dependant on that areas background. All good fun and adding up to as marvellous martial fest.
Dreamcast
Simulation
Serious looking machinery and gruffer looking blokes make up the into to this military simulation with the commands in English making it accessible for those who like to take their crack team behind enemy lines and follow the plan through to fruition.
Dreamcast
Shoot Em Up
Claustrophobic 3D shooter from Scouse software house Rage Software which was one of the first Dreamcast releases. Genki gets motion sickness everytime.
Dreamcast
Puzzle
Don’t let the cute graphics deceive you – this is one mean Mr Driller. Drill down before your oxygen runs out. Easy to pick up, but prone to that just one more go mentality where minutes become hours. You have been warned.
PS2
One on One Beat Em Up
Tecmo’s Team Ninja finest hour comes bouncing onto the Playstation 2 with Kazumi and Ayane in full costume glory. As the theme song advises though: ‘Hide your drastic desire!’
Playstation
Platform
A brilliant version containing all the elements that make Goemon so special: brilliant platforming sections, wandering around town getting some octopus dumplings or staying for a nights sleep, crazy, super hero style 3D mecha sections and above all the wacky humour that makes Goemon stand head and shoulders above other gaming characters. Ganbare Goemon!
Super Famicom
Platform
Imaginative bosses and use of the console’s splendid palette make Super PC Kid a very colourful game. Transformation are in there as in the seminal PC Engine versions: this time PC Kid can change into an ostrich, a crab or a dragon. Putting the fun and blue skies back in gaming. Also known as Super Bonk.
Super Famicom
Action
Arcade smash converted very suavely to the Super Famicom losing none of the all action gameplay with swarms of enemy assailants nor lacking any of the over the top ‘Running Man’ presentation that sees competent play rewarded with prizes. The two stick control method of the arcade is replicated well with the direction pad for movement and the buttons for firing and it soon becomes second nature once practised a little. A right royal romp in two player mode.
Super Famicom
RPG
Capturing the essence of the golden 16Bit era of Super Famicom platformers with the shrunk down character sprites and expansive gaming world realised in intensive detail in the dark caves and vibrant towns. The effort put into production adds to the feel of a real gem twinking like one of the treasures in the cavernous underground labyrinths.
Super Famicom
RPG
Political uproar and war are the themes of this strategic RPG from ex-3DO developer Riverhill. Complemented by clever isometric view of the action.
