Dreamcast
RPG
Stunningly pretty RPG really hits its stride and was worthy of far greater attention. Capcom really put the hard yards into this series and its clear here why it has its dedicated aficionados.
Wonderswan
Simulation
Board game version of the colourful capers of the pirate crew with players each trying to outwit the others to find it to the treasure – loved by pirates everywhere. Pretty animation and plenty of work has gone into this worthy licensed title.
Playstation
A Bit Special
Another fine escapade that captures the relentless action and humour of the anime series including plenty of slapstick and deadpan jokes. The introduction seamlessly leads the player into the crux of the game with some click anime showing Bandai’s high value placed on its series.
PS2
One on One Beat Em Up
Tough guy fight title that uses elbows, knees and no holds barred as pugilists become wrestlers when bouts crumble to the floor with a submission as good as a knock out. The legendary Brazilian Gracie features alongside Japanese wrestler Sakuraba with a lot of work having gone into making a great resemblance only for players to bash away at their chiselled features. But its not just the players features that have been carefully mapped out: each individuals moves add a lot of depth and make for a very well rounded fight fest.
PS2
One on One Beat Em Up
New meets old as stylish anime speed lines are spliced with traditional pilgrim hats, baggy, monk trousers all set to tatami mats and with atmospheric rain downpours. Some serious special moves that can blast your opponent across the entire, and sometimes lengthy, arenas. Great blend of action and specials spiced up with some sumptuous anime.
Dreamcast
Sports
Zippy bike game that does without the unforgiving bike physics and in doing so takes an arcade approach to racing. The weather effects and courses are very nicely drawn with no slow down and it brings us ample evidence of the raw processing power of the DC. The tunes are also relentless making it hard to let go of the throttle at times.
PS2
Action
Gundam mecha robots battle it out using the Seed power up to inflict some serious paintwork damage on opponents. A real host of mechs are selectable in the versus mode with extras only accessible by first unlocking them. The presentation, graphical look and soundtrack with voice overs all reflect the immense proportions of the Gundam series and are suitably slick.
PS2
Simulation
Sammy has fine lineage in the pachinko stable and excels here once again in recreating the parlour at home with colourful eye candy graphics and toe tapping tunes.
Nintendo 64
One on One Beat Em Up
Various super heroes looking like Dural crossed with the Power rangers enjoy the 3D arenas with Lethal Challenges possible as pugilists lock horns during battle. Its possible to bet on the outcome (not that Genki would condone such unprofessionalism) and some tasty combos add to the impressive package.
Dreamcast
RPG
Beautiful action RPG – think a 3D Princess Crown with an elliptical world, with fine attention to detail and platform action sections with tight jumps and steady nerves a prerequisite. Subtitled ‘Arsia in Day Dream.’
PC Engine HU Card
RPG
Comedy adventure involving top spy ‘Sadakichi Seven’ trying to capture the Natto (fermented beans) organisation.
Switch
Action
Six Ninja Ja Ja Maru games from 1985-91 well worth investigating and not just for the superfluous number of ninjas. Our wee ninja leaps around the platform levels dispatching shurikens to clear a path to rescue his beloved. Smashing though platforms to get a shortcut and grabbing the ghosts that rise from bosched opponents are all part of the fun.
Switch
Shoot Em Up
Granada, Psychic Storm, Gaiares and Avenger make for a roster well-worth revisiting and not just for vintage gamers. Gaiares will delight many yet to sample its charms, yet all stand tall in this fine back roster from cult cracker Telenet.
Nintendo 3DS
Shoot Em Up
Cave seems to have replicated one of its arcade escapades on the 3DS and it looks and plays like a treat. Taking a tank based approach to shooting mayhem, the polygon count could only have been dreamed of on home based, yet alone handheld system, only a generation ago. Power up cards change weaponry and add an extra element to the involvement in a very polished title. Not surprising with input from the creator of Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga.
Wonderswan
Simulation
A must for anyone who can sing the Gundam theme tune. Great shading make this a very atmospheric title that does justice to the WonderSwan. Mr. Gunpei Yokoi would have been very proud.
PS3
Shooter
Cinematic shooting action as Capcom blends the boundary between Hollywood blockbuster and triple A gaming. Plenty of nice surprises as players run and gun anything that moves. The Japanese version has Japanese subtitles to the cut scenes and uses English for the audio.
GameBoy Advance
Sports
World courses that have a distinct feel of the Super Famicom’s Mode 7 about them as drivers power drift according to the navigators spoken instructions. Fine sense of speed and motion with an impressive draw distance given the limitations of the hardware.
PS2
Rhythm
Konami’s initial RPG for the PS2 sees you playing as young vagabond called Mouse. The story begins with Mouse, having composed music for a royal wedding, being inruiged as to why the bride looks so glum. Compatible with the ‘Guitar Freaks’ guitar (not supplied.)
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Karate style fighting game with a vast array of texture mapped polygon protagonists to choose from – including a martial artist sporting a very fetching afro. Also has events, wood breaking and training by the sea in true karate style.
