Gamecube
Action
Capcom continues its highly original schedule with this cel shaded movie maker. Wacky action hero Joe must keep beating the bad guys in order to keep the cameras rolling with plenty of directors tricks up his pink lycra sleeve such as slow down and speed up for when things get a bit hairy.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Very cute sprite based volleyball game bringing a bit of Rio sunshine to your Engine.
Sega Saturn
Shoot Em Up
Exemplifying all the hit points that made the Saturn a mean 2D machine. Cute sprite graphics and good pacing. One for every Saturn blaster head’s collection.
Sega Saturn
Stimulation
Expertly realised animation shows the power of hardware in the right hands in this yellow label adventure. All is not what it seems on the island of Desire.
Sega Saturn
One on One Beat Em Up
Subtitled: Darkstalkers’ Revenge. The Saturn was made for titles of this ilk: wonderfully balanced characters hammering it out in 2D bliss. You can feel Capcom’s spark return in this Saturn classic.
Sega Saturn
One on One Beat Em Up
Super Deformed versions of Lau, Wolf, Pai et al in a light hearted take on the VF series.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
Rated Yellow Label material, this bumper collectors pack contain Suchie Pai Mahjong 1 & 2 plus Suchie Pai Throbbing Adventure making it a worthwhile purchase even if you can’t play mahjong.
Dreamcast
One on One Beat Em Up
Hi-res, mean and moody gritty urban look to proceedings as Playmore gets tough after SNK’s demise. Includes tidy puzzle mode where you can send a special move out to devastate your opponents play field. Love it or loathe it: you have to admire the bold graphical shift to reflect darker street fashion.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Showcasing all that is popular in these sim games: love interest, beautiful graphics and of course a few fights along the way. The new gaming feature the original introduced was the use of trust points awarded or deducted as a result of interactions with other characters that effect the overall endings. A huge Sega title for the discerning otaku.
Mega Drive
One on One Beat Em Up
Tengen games seem to be very collectable on the Mega Drive. Here they go for digitise fight action that was de rigueur for fighting gaming at the time. Big battle arenas and some impressive digitisation.
PS2
Shoot Em Up
Final finale for Irem’s vintage R-Type series with its distinctive projectile orb that can project the ship or be fired out to get amongst the enemy drone waves. The colour coded power ups are intact as is the tough nut challenge even with a fleet of nippy vessels to unlock and pick from. Keeping to its 2D principles the action twists and turns viciously at times to keep you firmly hovering over the fire button with such devious variations in scroll direction. Graphically gorgeous and a fitting tribute.
PS2
Sports
Updates the amazing Winning Eleven 10 engine with all the very latest data available for the 2006/7 European season. Also includes a World Tour mode where the squad travels afar to bestow glory on the famous badge. Looks more realistic than ever, but just as much sweat and effort seems to have gone into the uber slick play engine.
PS2
RPG
A high-budget update of the popular Playstation title which demonstrates Square Enixs grasp of the PS2 architecture. Rousing orchestral soundtrack and plenty of emotional thrills and spills for fans of the Square Enix stable. Subtitled Silmeria.
PS2
RPG
A smashing series that shows that big budget collaborations can bare succulently sweet fruit when in the right hands with a dream collaboration between Square Enix and Disney. Succinct gameplay and scintillating visuals with delicately balanced mechanics.
NEO GEO CD
Shoot Em Up
Vertically scrolling shmup with great characterisation to spice up the on screen onslaught. Impressively imaginative interactive backgrounds also add much to the intrigue. The series is known as Aero Fighters in the West.
Mega Drive
Shooter
On the rails shooter where the screen scrolls along as Duke shoots into it like in the Neo Geo classic Nam 75 and I suppose Operation Wolf. Masses of enemy attacks keep the action frantic and frenzied as your Uzi is in near danger of seizing up. A real blast from an arcade expert.
Playstation
Shoot Em Up
Vertically scrolling tribute to the Capcom 194x series but still a refreshing change from the reoccurring outer space theme. Improved aurally and visually over the prequel, with little sign of any slowdown regardless of the relentlessness of the on going aerial assault. A competent conversion of the coin grabbing arcade.
Playstation
Shoot Em Up
Arcade classics 1942, 1943 and 1943 Kai on the one CD which is great to see as, aside from the 1941 Super Grafx conversion, until this release the home versions had been a tad disappointing. Thankfully Capcom’s back catalogue is well worth cashing in on.
Playstation
Shoot Em Up
Conversion of the much heralded Seibu Kaihatsu coin-op that never relied on cheap tricks or gimmicks, just simple play mechanics, hardcore level structures, a riffing soundtrack and good old fashioned high scores awarded for collecting medals. The weapons can be powered up but there are only two to select along with two supplementary bomb attacks. Pure arcade shooting action.
Playstation
Sports
When France came good and Ronaldo went awol as Les Blues united the country in their domination of all before them. Relive the moment or rewrite history as Konami sweeps the ball from wing to wing with precision passing and a thrilling crossing system that brings in this crucial factor of the real game into the home conversion. Just try and resist heading it yourself as the cross swings in.
Super Famicom
RPG
A fine RPG on a system with more than a few role playing medals on its chest. The epic combat is reminiscent of Phantasy Star and the group gameplay keep the action zipping along. Has its own style which works well, especially against such stiff opposition.
