PS3
Action
With production values of a high budget Hollywood and no doubt a cast of voice actors to match, Biohazard 6 sees it all kick off again with nerves of steel and plenty of bullets a requisite to not ending up zombie fodder. Genki feels a nervous twitch returning as the hordes of undead begin to mass and a real sense of dread when the bosses begin to surface.
Famicom Cart
RPG
This version has more going for it that didn’t make the cut for the English language release. Jammed full of Chinese cultural references, or at least Chinese culture from a Japanese perspective, it can be pretty zany at times.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Wrestling from the kings of grapple Human. Genki wouldn’t fancy getting pinned off the Canadian judo killer Joe nor coming up against the mysterious moves of the Hong Kong Dragon God much either!
Dreamcast
Simulation
Gundam in Japan is huge in both popularity stakes and sprawling stories. Humans enter the cockpits of giant mecha robots to fight with other suitably proportioned mecha robots. Exquisitely choreographed battle scenes.
PC Engine HU Card
One on One Beat Em Up
As the title would suggest, jousting between massive mechas – proving beyond doubt the Japanese gaming fraternity’s obbsession with fighting robots. The giant mechas battle it out travelling along a road, hence the ‘Run’ part of the title. Better in two player mode where power ups are keenly fought over.
Mega Drive
Platform
Bitmap Brothers on top form taking inspiration from Roman and Greek mythology and putting plenty of their own unique twists into this platform shooter. As with all Bitmap Bros titles, the tunes are inspired, touching on Xenon’s genius. And the shop provides welcome relief in the game.
Mega Drive
Shoot Em Up
Side scrolling shooter from old hands Masaya taking you on a journey through dense jungle and Egyptian inspired artefacts with only a very hand multi directional gun for company. The multi directional shooting capabilities are very useful on latter stages as Masaya ensures you fully appreciate its versatility and it adds much to the shmup formula. Worthy of a place in the Mega Drive shooter hall of fame.
Mega Drive
RPG
The Genesis gets its own RPG of biblical proportions and theres not a Link in site (though you may be lucky enough to encounter a sun lounging Sonic.) A great tribute to the seminal Super Famicom title with joyous sprite graphics capturing the innocence of youthful exploration through the varied game world. Animals are used in conjunction with the sword to be able to utilise special powers and open up new areas, such as the penguins ice shots or the leopards speed boost. Picks a great title to dedicate itself to and comes mighty close to matching it. Also known as Crusader of Centy.
Mega Drive
Platform
Popular platform shooting that oozes atmosphere with heavy, leaden skies making up the parallax scrolling. The sprite world is full of rich imagination and the artists were in inspired form with the fantasy bosses and baddies. Known as Risky Woods in the West.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Gaining entry to the winners paddock involves plenty of hard slog in the wind and rain before feeling the sun on your back and the taste of sweet champagne in the enclosure.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
Features a real mull of games including a razor sponsored breakout clone, a puzzle game and an adventure entitled Big Brother, adverts for Japanese products, interviews of the Virtua Fighter team and most interestingly of all a digital comic version of Virtua Fighter…
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Very fluid animation and the screen zooming in and out add much drama to the proceeding as the fly like Kamen Rider puts paid to many a latex loving bad guy and ensures a legion of armchair followers in the process. Very smart backgrounds too: impressive performance levels from the PSX.
Playstation
Shooter
Related to Starblade and Galaxian 3, Star Ixiom has slicker visuals with impressive explosions and more engrossing gameplay with an immersable story. Missions are set cruising in space and between them players can explore the space station from which you jettison out from. Import friendly with a simple interface in English.
Super Famicom
A Bit Special
A Super Famicom classic, no mistake. Amazingly recreates the feel of flying through the sky be it on the rocket belt or gyrocopter flying through hoops or chasing the thermals to stay up in the air. Tough, but any mistakes are always your own fault. Some great bonus levels too. Packed full of ideas – a breath of fresh air to the games industry.
Dreamcast
Sports
From the Virtua school of wrestling comes this well executed special with tag options and plenty of wrestlers to choose from. The presentation is smooth with plenty of flashbulbs going off as the wrestlers ham it up as they head for the ring. Grappling is never dull with the array of specials on offer.
Sega Saturn
RPG
Sample of the Devil Summoners Soul Hackers and Ronde releases from Atlus on the Saturn. One for the collectors wishing to flesh out the fine structural skeleton of the Saturn.
PSP
Action
Has the high production values feel of Evangelion as players utilise their mech to take on some pretty crazed robots threatening the good citizens of a Neo Tokyo. The action sequences allow players to let rip, yet there are still plenty of tactical special moves which can be utilised in order to take down the mechanical monstrosities with minimum mess.
Playstation
Simulation
One of the more popular horse racing simulation game series that draws you in to the world of horses.
Playstation
Action
Dogfight plane game with souped up mach speed frame rate making a cool hand a requisite.
PS2
Action
A very under-rated third person shooter that works a real treat with the fine balance struck between graphical pizazz and frame rate. The targeting system works a treat and it deserves a second look for those missing it first time round.
Playstation
Simulation
Turn based strategy combat making use of the hardware’s 3D capabilities as the space ships are spun and flipped around in the search for weaknesses, like a hardware demo itself.
