A Bit Special
Unfortunately the Dreamcast servers are now down meaning emails can’t be sent, but this is still a nice collectable for fans of the Sakura Wars series.

Action
Played as a young yakuza wanabee getting to rough up citizens on your territory for cash to spend on items such as the defensive leather jacket or the pretty mean sword. Whilst not the longest title, its a very fun, budget ride through the underworld while it lasts.

Robots in disguise must be avoided, but otherwise Optimus Prime romps through the platform levels blasting all and sundry. Nice nostalgia in many of the baddies including a T Rex look alike. Genki was always a big fan of the ones which could transform into cassette tapes, Decepticons or not. Subtitled Convoy no Nazo in Japanese or Mystery of Convoy.

RPG
Fabulous action RPG that uses the confines of the towers dungeon like levels well with beautiful lighting (as well as possibly getting round any hardware limitations, but Genki wouldnt be so cynical.) The isometric look leaves plenty of creative freedom to the developers and they have risen to the challenge with aplomb. The action is well suited too to the clear layout and escaping the underground caverns does feel like a breath of fresh air, such is the effectiveness of the underground atmosphere.

Highly collectable original Famicom version. The graphical limitations made programmers work hard on gameplay where Star Soldier excels. The robotic brain pays a visit at the end of level mutating into a bigger, badder boss as you progress. The whole epic series started here.

Classic old school shooter from the kings of the Famicom era Hudson that ruled the roost with fast paced, arcade shooting action, to paraphrase from the era. Superb box art and good, wholesome gameplay.

Epic action RPG adventure with the emphasis more on hack and slash rather than anything too cerebral. The RPG elements involve boosting your attributes through collecting crystals defeated foes leave behind. Beautiful graphical style in the style of a Hong-Kong fantasy flick.

One on One Beat Em Up
Lauded by many of gaming’s cognoscenti for it’s stance of one hit, one kill. Requires the patience and zen of a true samurai.

Vertically scrolling helicopter shooter with the heli sounding a little kaput as it takes down enemy bases and tanks, planes ships: pretty much an entire battalion.

Highly original in the choice of helicopter that must be piloted to dowse city fires and rescue pregnant ladies, gentlemen and even dogs on roofs. Not too sure how they get on the roof on some occasions, but no time for such superfluous questions when on missions where time is of the essence.

RPG
Played as a dog piloting a mecha suit in order to round up rogue felines who have been getting a bit aggro, Tail Concerto is a real treat and not just for the canine club. The game tags on some RPG elements but the emphasis of the action is most firmly placed on the 3D platforming sections. Still its always good fun to rummage through someones possessions to try and find a useful item, even if not recommended in real life.

One on One Beat Em Up
Set before the original Street Fighter, this features a host of faces to liven up the action: none fresher than Sakura, prouder than Rolento or wiser than old boy Gen. A couple of Final Fight characters even make a guest appearance. Superbly honed to give a balanced bout. Demonstrates the PSX’s fine 2D prowess as it throws beautiful pastel shaded combatants effortlessly around the screen.

One on One Beat Em Up
3D battle fest as the Playstation gets in on this popular N64 series act and with its plethora of special moves and fighting styles there’s never a dull moment. Features unlockable characters and a replay mode to savour your fine timing or cast a critical eye over your bad choice of move. Smashing variety in the backgrounds too with each stage appropriately themed to its inhabitant be it the evil stage or the vast open desert.

Dragon Quest has a distinctive graphical look that captures the kawaii even in its bad boy bosses. Its easy to see why it is so cherished by its devotees and also why it was given a 3DS update. Happy, carefree RPG romping like a run through a summer meadow.

3D platformer allowing you to draw your own characters to play with in game. Improved visuals in an innocent and colourful theme with some light RPG elements and card collecting. Also known as Graffiti Kingdom, sequel to Magic Pengel.

One on One Beat Em Up
A fifteenth anniversary celebration of the title that led to a whole genre and generation with repetitive strain wrist injuries. Includes footage in the gallery from the intros, end sequences and also the Street Fighter anime. With plenty of play modes to keep fans entertained from Super X, Super, Turbo to Dash and Normal, maybe just one more credit. A good title to challenge the grandkids at too!

Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
So many games owe so much to Renegade, yet Kunio is held with the respect he deserves in Japan, despite being a ‘yankee’ style high school scrapper. True to the original arcade co-op all the way, even down to the pulverising sound effects and tough nut difficulty. Still sitting on your adversaries whilst giving them a good biffing helps relieve some of the tension. Proper Japanese title: Nekketsu Kouha Kunio Kun. Part of the ‘Ore Tachi Gamesen Zoku’ series (We are the game centre gang – sounds tougher in Japanese!)

Genki loves the kabuki themed cabinet and the chip tunes and sound effects are cheerful.

Tasmanian Devil styled Crash Bandicoot charges into the screen adding to the feel of rampaging as he spins and bounds across obstacles and adversaries. Genki particularly likes ice levels with reflective sheets of ice and plenty of slip sliding away. Happy memories.

Sports
Developed by Camelot with plenty of hidden secrets like the mystery match up that lets you unlock the hidden characters – if you beat them. Gives the sport a more exciting translation to the console as it doesn’t try to be too realistic and can be easily picked up and played. And the ghost course is a real treat.

Follow up to the Super Famicom cracker. Puppet, or that should read robot, maker Dr Gepetto has just died in the sad intro, but not before telling the robot he created called Josette to master the skills he was built with in this RPG-esque adventure. Well actually its more down to the San to teach him right from wrong and not spare the rod. Josette is beautifully animated and his journey of discovery is a joy to watch unfold with heart wrenching expression. A special achievement considering this was such an early release for the N64.
