PS2
Action
Beautiful combination of the skills of the anime artists to draw cel shaded sprites with dynamic effects and intriguing locales to really bring the animated series to life. The tag option works well and adds much depth and fun to the frolics.
PS2
Action
Based on the story of ordinary farmers rebelling against their unjust samurai leaders with plenty of slicing and dicing in this historical epic.
Super Famicom
One on One Beat Em Up
One on one fighter released in a area of CG effects becoming de rigueur for a CD format release. The clanking robots have good variety and the riffs inspire a bit more perseverance with the fight engine.
🏆Brilliant!
Brilliant PS2
Simulation
A more modern gaming genre in the shape of a game aimed at ladies dating. Plenty of bishonen style young men to chat to in this visual novel.
Animal Crossing Figures
Accessory
Get unusual items and, better still for the Nintendo fan of a certain vintage, receive retro Nintendo titles to enjoy in game simply by scanning these cards on your e Card Reader when playing the e Card version of Animal Crossing on the GameCube.
Nintendo 64
Puzzle
The solid puzzle planning of Tetris meets the lush presentation of Disney in Capcom’s expert hand. A very fine version to savour.
Dreamcast
Simulation
The first instalment of the epic Sakura Taisen marched onto the Dreamcast demanding attention of all with its very slick 3D battle scenes. This exquisite special pack comes with a Dreamcast VMU in a very tidy wooden finish showing the attention to detail Sega gave to its beloved Dreamcast.
PS2
Simulation
A spritely romantic adventure set in a senior high school with great tunes to back up the action. Its most likely a decrease in Genkis already limited kanji capacity, but it does seem easy to upset a few of the feistier characters.
PS2
Simulation
Translating as the Earl and the Fairy, this romantic escape is set in Victorian England with the Earl and the Fairy meeting up. The Fairy is actually human and so named for her knowledge of fairies.
GameBoy Original
Simulation
Tactical selection of weaponry and an immense two player experience made for some very popular GBA updates, but all the series appeal can be found in this humble GameBoy title. Plenty of hidden Nintendo magic behind the smoothly presented, user friendly take on the war sim.
GameBoy Advance
Platform
Disney’s demands on Capcom to ensure it cherishes its license brings out stunning results on the hardware be it the SFC, MD, GG or here on the GBA. Crisp sprites with astounding attention to detail make you feel your stay is at a five star hotel. Good, clean platform fun executed with a panache and design flair few developers can match.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Pixel perfect Square graphics as it matches its own sprawling epic Final Fantasy with immense graphical attention to detail and imaginative boss battles plus plenty of side quests against wonderfully realised monsters. Sheer clash.
PS2
One on One Beat Em Up
Some serious specials unleashed if the player can win a brief battle of the ancient art of button bashing against your opponent. Seamless anime sequence then kicks in and the opponent is dealt a serious blow to their power bar in one hefty bosch of an instalment. All performed in the humour of the series and making for a very enjoyable fight fantasy.
Nintendo DS
A Bit Special
Multitude of mini games bring the Nintendo magic back to jaded gamers with fresh and pure pick up and play gameplay. Ideal for the busy gamer lacking time for Konami and Squaresoft style cinematic epics. Makes great use of the stylus controller.
Famicom Cart
Platform
A platform adventure with light RPG elements including a few real time stats at the base of the screen. Nothing too elaborate, but as such it ticks all its boxes and jumps through more hoops than Genki after a flask of green tea.
Miscellaneous Games
Shooter
Splendid conversion of the nausea inducing arcade monolith, unfortunately without giant hydraulic cockpit, but all the rest is very well represented. Old school mechanics and high tension, adrenalin fuelled action from a golden era of the coin op when Sega ruled supreme.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Culture Brain takes inspiration from a pipe dream of Persia in this Middle Eastern infused RPG. The combat is full of action and gets the sabres swinging around and great use of colour brings the vibrancy out.
Famicom Cart
Action
Collect the money whilst avoiding ninjas made far more appealing by Sunsoft’s imagination: daikon and lantern power ups as well as the appearance of a rather rough looking geisha of questionable gender to be avoided at all costs. Classic Famicom material of gameplay over graphics.
Playstation
RPG
Delightful outshoot from the usual RPG action as the Fantasy world is realised in glorious isometric perspective with emphasis firmly on combat. Lavish attention to detail with deceased members of the party being turned into skulls and the beautifully illustrated avatars add to the involvement. The magic effects are expertly handled including some earth shattering attacks with a appropriately soothing or dramatic musical score depending on the action. Thumbs up.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
With a multitude of contestants each with different personalities and special moves, there’s plenty here to keep the grapple fan pinned. A real scream in four player mode. Utilises a more subtle control method than the usual button bashers and gameplay is enhanced as a result.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
A well drawn anime adventure with three small stars each about 15cm in height. Makes good use of the difference in size between these three ladies and the rest of the games characters reminiscent of the Borrowers or Arriety, as the Miyzaki anime was known.
