PS2
Sports
Few games can sooth like Everybody’s Golf, possibly designed to ease the tensions of Japanese workers and students. Beautiful courses have detailed rendering and the sounds of nature are never too far away. Any one of the series titles show why it has become the definitive golf game and its not just big in Japan.
PSP
Sports
Konami’s elegant but deadly striker once again dons the cycling shorts to fire a flurry of well crafted volleys into the Fifa Soccer net. Looks an absolute delight on the small screen with realistically animated players that obey the laws of physics. Also has beautifully animated close ups of incidents such as players fighting, substitutions and, of course, the goal celebrations. But gameplay has always been where the series excels and this provides another footballing lesson to the opposition. Full complement of teams including Premier League, but only Chelsea and Arsenal are listed by their proper name and club badge. The rest still have all the correct players intact: accurately represented and very recognisable.
Gamecube
One on One Beat Em Up
Outstanding graphical talent must make opponents of the Naruto series despair, such is the flair which the fox spirited ninja and accomplices are realised. And the graphical flavour really excels in four player mode – if only there was more time to appreciate it. The multiplayer grapples work well with the addition of auto targeting missing from Guilty Gear and ilk that really makes it workable. The counter moves to diffuse an opposing technique also add to the tactical nous required to flourish in this ninja world. But the super specials unleash purely devastating results.
Playstation
Action
Overblood’s missions involve platform hopping, key locating and a few run and gun ins along the way. It’s the variety of the power ups items that make this stand out: a grappling hook to reach new heights, heat resistant clothing to wade through the fire, a variety of TNT to blast through to previously inaccessible areas, crystals to freeze over or evaporate away water… The levels often seem to have more than one solution to getting through them adding to this game’s unusual charm.
Playstation
Rhythm
The beat goes on with this funky update from those cool cats at Konami with some sublime, psychedelic visuals to distract you from keeping in sync with the tune. The Japanese DJ-ing equivalent of Smashy and Nicey seem to have snuck in there too, along with some tougher tracks to make this a very tidy update.
Playstation
Sports
Improved graphical engine and subtle tweaking making this one of the finest PSX footy titles. Putting in the hours with the cones on the training pitch reaps rewards in the big matches – its always a thrill to pull off the flicks and tricks against opposition rather than training cones.
Mega Drive
Action
SD stands for Super Deformed – taking established characters and making cute little mini versions. A little like Telenet has done here with this anime series. Saccharine sweet graphics including some fine recreations of Japan Railway stations – perhaps taking the platform theme a little far? Tragically known as Syd of Valis in the Occident leading to lead character Yuko being given a man’s name.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
KID is a dab hand at these titles and this is based at a senior high school as players take on the role of adolescent male pupil trying not to get in trouble with the females students.
PS2
RPG
Brings the ninja themed Naruto world to life with an explorable 3D world consisting of RPG elements. The gaming arena remains exactly the same areas as soon as a fight breaks out. And you are never far away from a battle. Also known as Naruto Uzumaki Chronicles (or Whirlpool Chronicles.)
PS2
Platform
The hardware is capable of keeping up with Sonic’s speed and the game works as well in the third dimension as it does in 2D back on the Mega Drive. Fine blend of speed and action, masterfully mixed by the Sonic Team.
PS2
Simulation
An excellent example of a console flight sim that steers away from too detail, yet has far more substance than action flight games. The sequel has increased the size of game and reached a pinnacle of graphical excellence with more planes to savour. Import only, but the menu allows you to change the language to English. On par with the finest PC flight sims.
PS2
Action
Cruise the highways on a CHIPS style police bike protecting VIP’s in their cars from terrorists. The players guns are auto fire and its possible to take a hail of bullets on behalf of the presidents as its only their health that depletes. More fun than a can of spray cheese.
Super Famicom
One on One Beat Em Up
Conversion of the massive Neo Geo title from the 2D fighting grandmaster SNK. Some wonderful playable characters to choose from including the superbly named Korean Taekwondo expert KimKap Hwan and generous girth of Chinese gent Cheng Sinzan.
Super Famicom
Puzzle
A nice twist on the squishy Puyo Puyo empire that sees players having to tackle predetermined screens of the jelly like beans. But there are RPG elements first before the player gets to the puzzles as our heroine, Rulue, takes centre stage. Full title: Super Nazo Puyo 2 Ruru no Tetsuwan Hanjyouki.
PS4
Action
The Ryu ga Gotoku team are in fine fettle as the player takes the role of a private eye investigating Yakuza murders. The combat system will be familiar to those who have cracked their knuckles in the Yakuza series. And the neon of Japanese cityscapes never looked so stunning. This version of the game became particularly collectable when Sega pulled it from sale due to the real life misdemeanours of one of the actors involved in the game.
Nintendo 64
Action
The essence of pure four player competitive action taking full advantage of the 64’s generous ports. Match up balloons of the same colour to clear your screen. So simple, yet so fiendishly compulsive. Essential after hours entertainment.
Super Famicom
A Bit Special
A fine compilation of retro goodness from Retro Bit That includes the sublime Joe & Mac 3, the action puzzler Magical Drop 2 and the pool game Side Pocket. A good balance to the roster of titles, all well-presented in Data Easts arcade style. But more should be playing Joe & Mac 3, even on the platform dominated Super Famicom.
Dreamcast
Sports
Beautiful weather and water textures add to the natural healing that comes from cruising the lakes in the great outdoors, dropping a line every now and then. The boat can be manoeuvred to a favoured spot on the lake adding an extra dimension to gameplay, particularly with the boat being equipped with a depth monitoring device. Spiritual healing for the urban oppressed.
Dreamcast
A Bit Special
Email sender looking very pretty in pink for fans of Sanrio’s Kitty chan. Unfortunately the Dreamcast servers have long since ground to a halt, but this remains a nice curio for the DC completist.
Famicom Cart
Puzzle
An enjoyable playing card based game in the Tetris/Puyo Puyo/Columns mould when instead of blocks or squishy balls, players must align the cards to make flushes of the same suit or, for example, Jack, Queen, King. Pleasant chip tunes and bunny girls to complete the Eighties Vega theme.
GameBoy Original
Platform
Subtitled ‘Takahashi Meijin’. Old school platforming in all its springs, strawberry and skateboarding cliched brilliance.
