Tank game which has a quick frame rate as players take out other tanks and bridges and the like with plenty of shouting in the background to induce some feelings of real combat and the chaos that ensues. Impressive stuff on a platform popularly not meant to be able to reach such heights and expected to bomb out when it comes to textured polygons.

A handy, yet alas somewhat obsolute device, but an ace addition for the DC completist. Allowed gamers to switch the telephone line between using the phone for online gaming and for making calls.

Genki’s lack of moral fibre again comes to the fore in visiting the Cat Fight Club, ten pin bowling, or down the Sega Arcade enjoying Outrun, Fantasy Zone, Hang-On, Space Harrier and Beluga; rather than being out on the streets sorting out yakuza with more tattoos and scars than there are RPGs on the Super Famicom. Superbly executed, as stylish as ever. Shades, shadier folk, getting attacked in the urinals, tattoos, bad boy bosses – who would begrudge Genki a wee dram in the local snack later on in the day? A great conversion of the original manga source into game format drawing heavily on the boxing themed source material which adds much to the overall package. But its the boxing where this title stands or falls and the controls have been superbly done – not so easy to pick up, but mastering them gives a real sense of achievement.

A fine early version of the series that gives pilots a good grounding by requesting them to jump through hoops, well at least fly through as various manoeuvres must be mastered to progress. Great planes physics and gameplay that gives you wings.

One on One Beat Em Up
A great example of how fun games based on the Dragon Ball anime series can be. Split screen action allows players to separate to be thousands of feet apart and then to unleash one of the powerful special moves. Ken’s fireball wouldn’t stand a chance. Action shifts between two planes taking place on the ground and in the sky. Contains all the imaginative characters of Akira Toyama’s hit manga series.

Try and become the hang-on hero in this Japanese based motorbike racing game with two player mode, time attack along with the season’s challenge over a variety of terrains with eleven players to choose from.

Cracking series with plenty of the spirit of Shenmue in there alongside some runs ins with street scum and build up to big boss battles which have huge artistic input into their choreography. Plenty of side line off shoot scrapes: popping into the shop for a helpful rice ball boost, but best to avoid popping to the karaoke or snack bar too much. It may be a bit gaming by numbers, but in Genkis humble opinion it is worthy of far greater accolades.

Compilation of two more Kunio Kun games: Sports Day and Soccer. Sports Day has track & field events spiced up by the ability to throw punches, bottles and even bowling balls during your rivals attempts. Soccer allows players to enjoy the fierce rivalry of rather over competitive football between Japanese high school teams. Similar to the Neo Geo classic Soccer Brawl in terms of the violent challenges possible. Pretty difficult to track down as the games star and biker gang look-a-like Kunio Kun has a strong following in Japan.

Action
Mean, moody underworld of the Yakuza that sees you scurrying around neon cities carrying out quests, meeting informants and sometimes even night club hostesses. The complex web builds up slowly and the police, or a certain police lady, soon get involved. Its never certain to say if they will be friend or foe, loyalty is a prized asset in this underworld. Plenty of fisticuffs with the odds stacked against our man, but fortune favours the just.

Fans of the Jaguar CD may be as rare as the snow leopard, but those familiar with the add on may recognise this as Baddies given a Japanese make over by Banpresto. Players control little bald dudes within their own world in a fun simulation that certainly cant be accused of taking itself too seriously.

A really off kilter action puzzle title based on the antics of Japanese anime oyaji Bakabon and so drawing on a rich tradition of characters from the series. Gameplay is of the vertically scrolling Puyo Puyo variety with very imaginative and distracting backgrounds.

Cuteness as only the Japanese know how, ‘Puyo Puyo’ style gameplay which is great fun in two player mode.

Gets those French Fries laced with salt and watch the drink sales soar. Nothing too fried too close to the big roller coasters though as no one wants to see what their fellow park attendees have been having for lunch. Genre breaking title to treat gamers with an eye for the unusual.

Good mix of modes including the Survival mode where you must try to win back the gems that have been stolen from the royal crown, hence the title. Two player link up battles are also possible using just a single cartridge. As simple and addictive as ever – the ultimate journey companion.

Mech battle sim with dramatic orchestral score and plenty of zooming in and out to the action. Player avatars and a fine sci-fi plot (well in anime terms) complement the action superbly.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Action
Stunning conversion of the Capcom arcade version and unfortunately as rare as rocking horse dung. Loses a few of the parallax layers and the two player option, but thats about all. Genki wishes all the Dynasty Warrior series were this much fun as you steam into to Mongolian hordes sword aloft on horseback in a plot losely based on Chinese mythology.

Simulates the ups and downs of life at a baseball club. You’ll need the eyes of a Fukuoka Hawk, the ferocity of the Chunichi Dragon, the backbone of a Hanshin Tiger and to be as coy as a Hiroshima Carp to succeed. Comes with online capabilities, unfortunately the servers are no longer there though.

One on One Beat Em Up
Here is the formula for Shinovi Versus: play as a pretty lady with some serious weaponry, such as pigtails with rotating blades. Clear a small section of the stage by taking on hordes of adversaries, often fellow ladies. Progress through the level to meet the boss. Power up and reveal (via an anime sequence) a skimpier outfit and seemingly boosting your stats other than your vital stats. Give boss a good beating and cause her to lose items of clothing (again via anime sequences.) Defeat boss, end level. Stylishly done with a real aplomb and an appreciation of the mass market as much as the doujin title. Hats off (and not just to protect the boss’ modesty.) Its more chefs hats in Dekamori as players button press to the onscreen rhythm helping the girls whisk up a culinary storm whilst bizarrely losing their clothes at the same time. Some even being squirted with chocolate sauce. An unusual combination of ladies and the Japanese love haute cuisine.
