PSP
Simulation
Beast battling game with quite a legion of followers in Japan. Its easy to see why though with expertly rendered ogres to lay into with precision planned armouries all looking very easy on the eye. Oozes with the Capcom polish of a triple A release.
XBOX 360
Shooter
A very North American feel to the first person shooting action as players use flash manoeuvres to get through the levels and let rip at the opposition. Hiding behind preferably bullet proof columns and utilising stealth helps, but the rock soundtrack encourages a trigger happy approach. Nice to see the scope being used on the gun, harking back to Goldeneye on the 64.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Full of sunshine being set on a tropical island with three delightful hostesses to play mahjong against. Utilises FMV and polygon players plus its Variable Impression and Personality System to create a solid take on the table sport with a few colourful extras.
Dreamcast
Simulation
Dreamcast adventure starring the Samurai Spirits Heroine Nakoruru in a quest that takes players deep into her world and keeps in fitting with her role in the savvy SNK scrappers. The snowy Hokkaido wilderness is the inspiration for the setting of the Ainu Nakoruru’s adventures whose ancestors were the original inhabitants of Japan.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Simulation
Choose from 18 sexy Japanese female idol opponents as you battle your way towards the final showdown in the evil castle. Very nicely presented even if most of the girls have 80’s style haircuts adding to the retro appeal.
Nintendo 3DS
Action
Beast battling game with quite a legion of followers in Japan so it is with some pride Nintendo bring it to the 3DS. Its easy to see why though with expertly rendered ogres to lay into with precision planned armouries all looking very easy on the eye and making the very most of the hardware. Oozes with the Capcom polish of a triple A release.
PSP
Action
Hugely successful series in its native Japan and this PSP update utilises everything that has made the game the success it is. The model based robots have never looked so luscious in their cel shaded glory and the ability to run around the main shopping street before popping into battle world keeps the gaming varied. Yet its the combat where this excels to levels to keep the most demanding otaku happy.
Super Famicom
Simulation
US tanks running at a fair pace through the heat haze and over the sand dunes of a certain dessert based Gulf state. The cursor and cockpit view create the tank feel well and invoke sheer panic as shells rain in from sometimes unsighted sources.
Super Famicom
RPG
Max and his war weary pals once again must all they can manage in the face of some unusual mechanical foes. A tank certainly helps cover explored terrain rapidly. And the combat remains as catchy as ever in this highly polished sequel.
Super Famicom
RPG
Dripping with atmosphere: be it the fogged over, damp, mushroom kingdom or the dank depths of underground cavernous warrens lit up by the cosy, warming naked torch. Captures the Japanese spirit of community with its friendly character interactions.
Super Famicom
Action
Genki loves the 16 Bit Simpson titles and they are quite cult collectables in Japan with a possible lower print run due to the series being not as well known there. Yet Acclaim has really let their imagination run riot as Bart heads off on his virtual reality missions. Examples include whizzing down a water slide and cycling off into the mode 7 distance avoiding Homer on his chariot. Bart is also converted into a pig to avoid the chop from Krusty and free fellow swine. Crackling stuff.
Super Famicom
Action
Super Famicom take on the famed laser disk title that wowed arcade gamers back in the early nineties. The action tries to replicate the hurried need to react quickly to the changing terrain and forced scrolling which would test the joypad dexterity of even the GamesMaster himself.
Super Famicom
Puzzle
Matching up the blocks of different colours and designs with the superb styling of ninja family Nintama. The characterisation adds much to the melee and plenty of colour to proceedings.
Super Famicom
Action
Luckyman is the combination of one of the unluckiest boys in the world (being crushed by a UFO landing) and Luckyman. This dream combo are charged with keeping alien invaders away. It makes more sense in the manga anyway. Well not much! This action based game is subtitled Lucky Cookie Roulette.
Super Famicom
Platform
With an unlikely looking hero in the shape of a small crocodile and dinosaur look a like, players fire the katakana sound ‘Gya’ out of their mouths to stop crabs and octopuses attacking. Plenty of Japanese zaniness in the appearance of lucky cats and a quick bonus game of bingo.
Super Famicom
Platform
As one might expect from a Disney backed title, the animation is incredible as Simba progresses from canny cub into lion with the ability to claw at enemies. The stampede section has made it in as a side scrolling scramble at break neck speeds and there are plenty of nice touches that go to make a platformer stand out from the crowd, or pride.
Super Famicom
Puzzle
A varient on the Puyo Puyo theme with different coloured bomberman helmets requiring alignment before the obligatory boom. Four player matches are a blast as the screen accomodates all players at once.
Super Famicom
Action
Casper and young helper manoeuvre round the isometric houses looking for clues in order to progress to the next section of the level. Its possible for Casper to go off on his own in search of clues through use of his abilities as a ghost. Very nicely drawn and realised.
Super Famicom
RPG
Incredibly off beat and to be applauded for it making Mother 2 look very straight laced, middle America. The inventory system places value on clothing as opposed to amour and the modern world setting in itself makes for an unusual approach compared to the more common fantasy theme. Very tidy screen representation of the gaming world with a distinctly Japanese feel to the game. Subtitled Day of the Idea.
Super Famicom
One on One Beat Em Up
Popular fighter due to its over the top explosions with huge dust clouds and special moves with lasers the size of bridges. The evasive aspect of gameplay is good fun too with the split screen action whizzing along like a projectile in terms of pacing. The source material is well captured too with some unusual pugilists.
GameBoy Original
Action
With the classic look of a Game & Watch title, this action platformer requires players to drop tactical bombs to give themselves some time to avoid the pursuit of the Tasmanian Tigers of the title. Perfectly suited to the small screen and a very enjoyable action title with some nice ditties such as Waltzing Matilda. Japanese title Tasmania Monogatari.
