GameBoy Original
Simulation
In depth exploration of the Shin Chan world and it certainly never lacks intrigue. Enjoyable and friendly escapades on the well loved GB handheld.
GameBoy Original
Sports
A three quarter perspective version of football with nice touches such as the teams bowing to each other (and the ref) before the game. The play mechanics are smooth and the world teams look good.
GameBoy Advance
Action
Famicom Mini Series which capture the beautiful packaging and the unforgiving gameplay of the source material from the Nintendo Famicom Disk Drive – never released outside Japan. Highly collectable. Goemon is known as Mystical Ninja in the Occident and is a Genki legend. ‘Ganbare’ means to do your best: enjoying the company of the townsfolk, but not forgetting to fight the odd ‘oni’ every now and then.
GameBoy Color
RPG
Places the player into the sublime Goemon world as a young lad who then teams up with the blue spiky haired one (not Sonic) to savour the fine hospitality of ancient Japan and take on a crop of unsavoury folk and creatures causing havoc.
GameBoy Color
Simulation
A smashing version although the moles that get bashed on the head in the video games it is possible to play in game may disagree. Still farmers have never been big mole fans and its important to choose the right seed. Its possible to pop off fishing, even for a skinny dip in a hot spring in this varied version of the cracking Bokujo Monogatari.
GameBoy Advance
Action
Improves on the prequel offering more ninja related high jinx with jutsu moves available when in a tight fix. Faithfully recreates the high pitched battles of the anime series and as a result is a solid action scrapper even for those without the slightest interest in passing their Chunin exams. Impressive cut scenes for the small screen and bold boss battles set to swathes of bamboo forests.
GameBoy Advance
Platform
The usual suspects are here from Walt’s theme parks. Play involves throwing a dice and trying to gain a crystal besides some colourful platform section. Known as Disney’s Party in the West.
Dreamcast
Sports
Cracking compilation of sports titles likely to feature in association with a fizzy caffeine drink. Sports include snow boarding, hang gliding, all terrain vehicle riding, mountain biking, sky surfing and bizarrely bungee jumping. Not too sure of the sport in the bungee, but far be it from us to knock a hobby we know little about. Shame certain newspaper editors don’t apply that rule to video gaming.
Super Famicom
Simulation
Board game take on the Zenki world that is little known with four player mode and dynamic anime cut scenes. Full of fun and a great off shoot for fans of the series.
Super Famicom
Platform
With an unlikely looking hero in the shape of a small crocodile and dinosaur look a like, players fire the katakana sound ‘Gya’ out of their mouths to stop crabs and octopuses attacking. Plenty of Japanese zaniness in the appearance of lucky cats and a quick bonus game of bingo.
Super Famicom
Platform
Fun and colourful platforming escapades. Genki particular holds a flame to the level which zooms out making the platforms look smaller so the speed players can zip through. Plenty of challenges from some unusual ghosts and animals including random game of snap help the series humour shine through.
Super Famicom
One on One Beat Em Up
As interesting as a game as a cultural study having been given a makeover to Street Combat for the Western audience. The subtle martial artists were transformed into robots and rejects from an Arnie movie. But the original has plenty going for fans of fight titles with a Japanese slice of lime of the side with an unusual control system with the buttons being used for jumping and blocking and all the wacky manga characters.
Super Famicom
One on One Beat Em Up
Absolutely crazy fighter with some of the maddest moves in manga martial mayhem the video gaming world has seen. An absolute must for fans of Rumiko Takahashi san’s gender bender and well worth a look for those after something graphically different to the usual Street Fighter II clone. Genki is a fan of the father transformation who turns into a panda and can only communicate with signs.
Super Famicom
Simulation
A board game with plenty going off in the meantime as players move round the board to be suddenly part of an indoor long jump challenge or part of a wacky game show. Some superb mini games, if you can cope with whatever cultural baggage you may be carrying into them. The board is also well represented in isometric form with some finely drawn characters full of expression.
Super Famicom
Action
Impressive Takara conversion that doesn’t have the full clout of the Neo Geo version, but considering the hardware and lack of memory, the results are mightily impressive. Tidy controls as players crash down buildings on each other as well as utilising their monsters special manoeuvres.
Super Famicom
One on One Beat Em Up
Early adopters of import formats in the UK may also have had their fingers on the pulse regarding the early anime releases over here (confusingly on the Manga label.) As such gamers of the era may have seen heads exploding in the post apocalyptic anime with Kenshiro as many times as they have seen Akira. The sheer scale of some of the opponents has been well represented as has their varied appearances and a suitable amount of special techniques dished out to each combatant.
Super Famicom
One on One Beat Em Up
Plenty of hearty shouts of ‘kiai’ as Kenshiro pummels into his somewhat rotund opponent Heart, and he does require some pummelling. Backgrounds represent the decay causes by a nuclear meltdown and have a feel of decay and destruction. Good representation of a license whilst sticking to Nintendo’s family policy of the time.
Super Famicom
Platform
Attains the Capcom level of polish as if Walt himself had been watching over the production. The imagination into the graphical effects sets the atmospheric powder keg off a treat such as with the lashing rain. And our beloved beast is a versatile creature ensuring the player soon warms to his dexterous manoeuvres.
Super Famicom
One on One Beat Em Up
Absolute treat of a game with atmospheric backgrounds from kabuki theatre, snowy Ainu inspired Hokkaido to Mount Fuji. The giant ‘Earthquake’ character is still jaw dropping even today. A very classy conversion from Saurus. Known as Samurai Shodown in the West.
Super Famicom
Platform
Time travel as best buddies Nobita and adorable blue cat Doraemon zip through levels of vicious looking dinosaurs (well vicious in cuddly, anime style) and rival, robotic cats in the future. Known in Japanese as Doraemon 3 Nobita to Toki no Takaraou.
Famicom Cart
Simulation
Basic commands such as talk, take, search and move help our beloved seal Goma and his faithful companion skilfully travel to Nepal with one or two scrapes along the way.
