Dreamcast
Puzzle
Uber kawaii Kitty played a big part in the Dreamcast marketing. Maybe Sega should have gone for Godzilla instead? Simple puzzle game with guest appearances of Kitty’s friends.
Dreamcast
One on One Beat Em Up
Superb fighting series and worthy follow up which was never going to be as great a leap forward as between the first and second instalments.
Switch
Shoot Em Up
Aleste is a well-respected series which has survived more skirmishes than the Millennium Falcon. This includes four versions of the game on the cart in: Aleste (Mark III), GG Aleste (Game Gear), GG Aleste II (Game Gear) and Power Strike II (Master System.)
Nintendo Hardware
Controller
Funky Famicom controller that works one handed, though perhaps Genki lacks a bit of dexterity and needs a bit more practise. Comfortable layout and a fine additional controller for the system.
GameBoy Original
Shooter
A similar title to Kikikaikai with its scrolling shooting action, Shinto priestess and many references to Japan of old in lanterns, Oni bosses and hopping, one eyed umbrellas. In the GB game however the action is force scrolled along, but this is a fine little blast for fans of a Japanese flavoured broth with many varied ingredients thrown into the stock. Ninjas, a Shinto priestess, a Buddhist priest rumbling along dispatching feudal adversaries in ancient Japan: Genki would love to claim the glory, but if we were let loose on a project, this wouldn’t be far off. Think Kikikaikai for the GameBoy. Known in Japan as Tenshin Kaisen.
Nintendo Hardware
Controller
A one handed controller that works well in the right hand in Asciis unusual take on the Super Famicom controller. Shining Scorpion compatible.
GameBoy Original
Platform
Kemco goes for an early Disney look approach to realising Mickey in this good, clean platform adventure. Clever touches and plenty of sweet animation to put a spring back in your gaming step. Known in the West as Mickey Mouse Magic Wand.
GameBoy Original
One on One Beat Em Up
Super shrunk down versions of the Hiryu no Ken series fighters with caricature faces and over the top expressions. Not taking itself too seriously, SD Hiryu still manages to pull a few punches and fight its corner well with interesting backgrounds such as cityscapes with Big Ben all adding to the intriguing of the character roster of nineteen characters. Good, clean fighting fun.
GameBoy Original
Platform
Old school platforming in all its springs, strawberries and skateboarding cliched brilliance. Simple character sprites, colourful backgrounds, good play mechanics all add up to a title that built Hudson into a major developer. Full Japanese name ‘Takahashi Meijin no Daibouken Shima II.’
GameBoy Color
RPG
Enjoy the simple life of living a frugal existence fishing in a small Japanese town. A delightful series which captures the spirit of community in such fishing villages as players battle the elements to bring home a prize fish in time to celebrate another timely arrival in the family. Just make sure you pack enough rice balls for your fishing trip. Mention must go to the fine chip tunes too with traditional roots that sooth your worries away. Known as Legend of the River King 2 in the West.
GameBoy Original
RPG
Known as the Legend of the Sea King GB in the West. Explore the town and cast a line or two to try and land the dream fish on endless summer days.
GameBoy Color
RPG
With a graphical look of Mother/Earthbound combined with adversaries to fight looking like extras from Rockman/Megaman, its easy to see why Metal Walker is a cherished part of Capcom’s back catalogue. Innocent RPG gaming from a simpler era of gaming.
GameBoy Original
Simulation
Poor old carpenter Gensan just wants a simple life, but once again his fair lady has been kidnapped and he must battle robot rivals in a quiz format. Questions are a good chance for Japanese students with heavy use of Hiragana and are on the lines of “How many bones in the human body?” Thankfully the answers are multi choice.
GameBoy Original
Puzzle
Manipulate the pattern on tiles to either twist them or shift position in order to be able to clear the screen. Plenty of that magical Disney-esque, Nintendo presentation behind the devilish gameplay. Known as Yoshi no Panepon in Japanese.
GameBoy Original
Action
Miyamoto magic at hand here yet somewhat slipped off the radar due to a certain yellow monster that radiated strange rays from its eyes. The bespectacled mole is out to rescue his poor folk kidnapped by the tough, gruff farmer. Levels are puzzle is style and players seek out a way to dispatch the bomb to move onto the next challenge. Bosses a plenty, but it’s the ability to dig that help players get out of a tight spot and takes the game onto a different level. Its Japanese name is Mogura Nya.
GameBoy Original
One on One Beat Em Up
Smashing little Capcom scrapper with silky roster of special moves as pugilists take on fellow robot fighters. Some tidy character designs as you might expect from Capcom with a giant skulled robot and simply a giant robot. Backgrounds make clever use of the hardware limitations to still conjure a futuristic feel, such as the robotic plans of the samurai armour in the temple level. Good use of combos too.
GameBoy Original
A Bit Special
A fine compilation of Mappy, Galaga, Namco Classic and Battle City. The platforming delights of Mappy, shooting action of Galaga and golfing exertions of Namco Classic are well known and summaries are on the site. Perhaps the lesser known element in the package is Battle City which involves the players tank defending a position against a whole armoury of opponents tanks with cool calculated shots a requirement to progress.
GameBoy Original
Simulation
A tidy RPG from Konami whose high production standards shine through. Also stars Koukiatsu Girl and some imaginative characters.
GameBoy Color
Action
Bomberman uses all his nous to clear the screen of enemies and whatever needs clearing to complete the mission such lumps of meat on the Neanderthal level. Tactical positioning, use of power ups and quick thinking are a must to stay alive. Subtitled Yami no Senshi.

Excellent use of the license taking the intriguing characters of Yu Yu’s spooky world and almost bringing them to life in the fight arena with special moves and bonus levels. Known in Japan as Yu Yu Hakusho Dai Ni Dan Ankoku Bujutsu Kai Hen.
GameBoy Original

Create a dinosaur which doesn’t require any toilet training thankfully. Battle against other dinosaurs to gain valuable HP points. Looking very cute on the GameBoy.
