PS2
Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
So many games owe so much to Renegade, yet Kunio is held with the respect he deserves in Japan, despite being a ‘yankee’ style high school scrapper. True to the original arcade co-op all the way, even down to the pulverising sound effects and tough nut difficulty. Still sitting on your adversaries whilst giving them a good biffing helps relieve some of the tension. Proper Japanese title: Nekketsu Kouha Kunio Kun. Part of the ‘Ore Tachi Gamesen Zoku’ series (We are the game centre gang – sounds tougher in Japanese!)
Super Famicom
Simulation
Genki loves the kabuki themed cabinet and the chip tunes and sound effects are cheerful.
Playstation
Platform
Tasmanian Devil styled Crash Bandicoot charges into the screen adding to the feel of rampaging as he spins and bounds across obstacles and adversaries. Genki particularly likes ice levels with reflective sheets of ice and plenty of slip sliding away. Happy memories.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Developed by Camelot with plenty of hidden secrets like the mystery match up that lets you unlock the hidden characters – if you beat them. Gives the sport a more exciting translation to the console as it doesn’t try to be too realistic and can be easily picked up and played. And the ghost course is a real treat.
Nintendo 64
Platform
Follow up to the Super Famicom cracker. Puppet, or that should read robot, maker Dr Gepetto has just died in the sad intro, but not before telling the robot he created called Josette to master the skills he was built with in this RPG-esque adventure. Well actually its more down to the San to teach him right from wrong and not spare the rod. Josette is beautifully animated and his journey of discovery is a joy to watch unfold with heart wrenching expression. A special achievement considering this was such an early release for the N64.
Famicom Cart
Shoot Em Up
Fast and frantic shooting action as the submarine drops bombs and launches torpedoes to try and keep on top of things. The speed the Famicom shifts the non screen action around impresses and the sprite based simplicity keeps the gameplay uncluttered and adds a visual charm. Plus the distinctive underwater locales keep this feeling as fresh as the school of angler fish awaiting.
PS2
RPG
Any game in which you can go into a bar and shout ‘Give me a whisky!’ can’t be bad. Add to that music from Every Little Thing and the game is off to a flier. Then comes the hands-on approach to combat with players controlling their boss battles rather than just selecting a magic to unleash. Its easy to see why this series flourish in a crowded genre.
Super Famicom
Sports
Nice arcade flow to the play with nice crowd effects and over the top celebrations to goals, including replays which were quite unheard of at the time.
Nintendo Hardware
Adaptor
Nice curio of an AC adaptor for those with a step down who just want to plug in and play their GameBoy Pocket, Light or Color, albeit with a step down transformer in the UK.
PS4
Shoot Em Up
Reaching back into what feels to Genki like the near past in compiling three precious (and fairly exclusive) Saturn shooters in Cotton 2, Cotton Boomberang and Guardian Force. Cotton 2 exemplifies all the hit points that made the Saturn a mean 2D machine. Cute sprite graphics and good pacing. Boomerang is not a full sequel to Cotton 2, more feeling like a very slick update as there wasn’t anything really in need of correcting in the prequel. The controls have been revamped along with gameplay additions of a special charge projectile and the facility to switch between three different players. As such the energy bar has gone: each player now represents a life. The in game graphics have been given a lick of paint with some impressive effects hurtling the player into more on screen insanity. The presentation has also been spruced up with hi resolution cut sequences and an intro to give twitchy fingers a break. A true success saving the best until last. Guardian Force is a unique take on the shooter formula with players taking the role of tank driver to blast through enemy lines. No mere gimmick though: in a refreshing twist the tanks turret can rotate through 360 degrees making it possible to pound enemy installations whilst making a hasty retreat. The simultaneous two player option is the icing on the pretty looking cake. A dream team compilation and a real blast.

Virtual Boy
Sports
Utilising the VB’s technology to the maximum as balls get pitched towards the batters face, sometimes coming a little too close for comfort inducing the odd, embarrassing finch. Pitching allows a variety of techniques to be used to catch the batter off guard including a fast pitch, a curved pitch or a forkball. Players are nicely represented in super deformed form. An enjoyable ballpark blitz.
PS2
One on One Beat Em Up
Based on the anime series with loose connections to Greek mythology, this plays a very solid battle with some sparkling visual effects worthy of the over the top specials. Destructable backgrounds add to the manga mayhem too. The Japanese version contains the original soundtrack and a few excellent, high tempo tracks which were sadly remixed for the European version due to copyright reasons. It also has more in game speech and katakana sound effects just like a manga book.
Playstation
Puzzle
A highly-collectable puzzle game in which players must get their brains thinking on the lines of triangles to slot them together and deliver punishing chains to your opponent. A cheery array of characters and enjoyable in-game animations for those with enough time to glance at them. Developer Santos is better known for Airgrave and Stahlfeder on the format.
PS2
Sports
Konami makes waves with its fluid flowing football engine taking it a good twelve points clear of its nearest rivals at the top of the table.
Nintendo 64
Sports
The oldest course in world golf gets a fitting tribute in this relaxing golf game with good putting set up to avoid nutter with the putter syndrome. Good use of the rich heritage of the course with the buildings and famous bridges well created using the 64s polygon power.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Daley Thompson has a lot to answer for as the official Olympic license gives this modern day incarnation a bit more of a refined approach to the varying disciples next to its more down to earth, retro podium runner. Known in the West as International Track and Field Summer Games.
Merchandise
Merchandise
The Game Gear thirtieth anniversary is celebrated with this two pin badge set beautifully presented in the decorative box. One of the badges is the Game Gear logo and the other the handheld system.
PS4
Shoot Em Up
True to its roots with organic bosses and power ups to bring back the nostalgia. The cut-scenes are a delight and the thrill of illuminating a dank, claustrophobic corner of the level with laser pyrotechnics is a delight.
Nintendo Hardware
Accessory
Snazzy little set designed to free the dirt from cart pins and also to slot into the back of the GameBoy to ensure nothing gets between the handheld and a good, retro blast. Comes in a cardboard box set the same size as a GameBoy cart box.
