Famicom Disk System
Sports
Genki must confess we don’t come across too many sets for the FDS – this one fits two games in Volleyball and Pro Wrestle onto one disk. Nintendo have done a sterling job to ensure the two games well represent the sport with graphics that are the right size to keep it playable, but also sufficient attention to detail.
PS2
Sports
Special and very limited edition pack containing the game playable in six different languages (including English.) The ultimate inclusion is a very high quality Adidas football shirt complete with Winning Eleven club badge. Ever more realistic with even the players hair (and mullets in some cases) moving in the direction they turn in.
PS2
Action
Fluid and frantic gameplay as players leap around levels avoiding the undead with rolls and leaps before unleashing a volley of fire from the twin pistols or slicing and dicing with a traditional katana. Epoch defining PS2 action.
PS2
Sports
Gon Nakamura kindly models this sixth installment of the Winning Eleven formula. Possible to pick up and play by any old Tony Adams, but with hidden depth in the controls it takes time and training to become a George Best.
Super Famicom
Sports
Genki is a big fan of Kid Dracula and his appearance in this golf game adds much intrigue with special shots and a belfry load of bats. Dorabochan is not the only colourful, pixelated character though and Naxat have cut loose to bring us the best of their rich imaginations.
Famicom Cart
Action
Charge into the screen Space Harrier style, but this is a platform style escapade and the player must avoid gates and space critters on the planets surface. The 3D effect is impressive and quick reflexes are needed to keep up with the rapid pacing. The Sequel to Tobidase Daisakusen.
Famicom Cart
Action
It takes great skill to be able to deflect the ball in Titan onto the blocks that need breaking down to clear the level. A simple premise with beautiful presentation.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Japanese adventure with plenty of unusual supernatural occurrences that seem quite bizarre looking from the occident. Actually, they will undoubtedly seem pretty bizarre looking from the orient.
GameBoy Color
Sports
Cast off a lakeside line and aim for a good spot on the map. The lure needs dragging along the water to tempt a passing bass into snaffling it up. Its there that the battle commences with the powerful bass to use technique and patience to land a battler. All without the whiff of ground bait and rollies. Known as TNN Fishing Champ in the West.
PS2
Sports
Arcade orientated football blast from pass masters Taito. Perfectly playable even without having to bellow commands at your star striker. The Portugal of the footballing world.
Sega Hardware
Controller
The height of kitsch which every self respecting otaku shouldn’t be without. Even comes with a stop watch rest. Infinitely adds to the realism when playing Densha De Go on the Saturn.
PS2
RPG
Lavishly illustrated avatars full of emotion (especially where Genki is concerned as we seem to keep upsetting the ladies with our choice of retorts) and detailed backgrounds. All very appropriate for the exquisite isometric perspective gameworld that will see players battling from rogue sailors on a galleon what looked like washed up ghosts from Pacman on a beach.
PS2
RPG
Gripping combat and effective third person perspective make Evergrace an enjoyable RPG romp. Taking on giant hornets and crab like prison guards with bare knuckles cant be much fun, so its good to grab a blade as soon as possible.
Sony Hardware
Controller
A supreme wheel that has the feel of a high-end piece of engineering usually seen in top automobiles. Brings an extra dimension to race games, especially where power slides are on offer.
PS4
Action
A real blitz of run and gun action as the lady assistant talks players through tricky scenarios in the gritty environment. Shoot first, look for switches later.
Switch
Shoot Em Up
Genki’s bugbear with Rolling Gunner is the difficulty in taking in the stunning, stainless steel mega bosses and seamlessly scrolling backgrounds in this super Switch side scrolling shooter. The soundtrack hits all the right notes too, inspiring players to keep blasting when it seems like every pixel is out to get you.
Sega Hardware
Cable
For the Dreamcast collector who wants it all: the individually sold modem cable in its original Dreamcast branded box. Alas memories are all that is left of the days when Phantasy Star Online and a fresh faced innocent bunch of online gamers hit it off.
Nintendo Hardware
Accessory
A useful toughened plastic cover to site across the DSi lid keeping it free from scratches whilst allowing the camera to be used. Very unobtrusive.
Gamecube
Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
Drawing on retro super heroes clad in Lycra and the great tradition of transforming into the ultimate hero found in Japan come Viewtiful Joe. The cel shaded look suits the over the top retro ham perfectly, almost as good a fit as Joes costume. And the large play areas allow players space to play their game to try and take down their opponent with as much style as the game itself. Highly commended for being fresh and fun.
Gamecube
Sports
Subtitled ‘New Generation Vs Legends.’ Kinikuman is an alien prince whose escapades are detailed in the Shonen Jump manga. This is a whacked out wrestling game with both story and tournament modes that could teach the WWF games a half nelson or two.
Miscellaneous Hardware
Console
Goodness gracious. A console that can play Famicom, Super Famicom, SNES (both PAL and NTSC), GameBoy, GameBoy Color, GameBoy Advance, Genesis, Mega Drive (Pal and NTSC, though Mark III would require a Mega Adaptor), PC Engine, Turbo Grafx and PC Engine Super Grafx games. That’s over nine thousand compatible games. The controller adapter allows keen gamers to use the original pads on the machine for that authentic feel. Games can be downloaded onto the machine with a Micro SD Card and then they can be taken around a friends house. Upscaling makes many never looking so fine. Also allows patches to be applied to games.
