Super Famicom
Platform
The first title to make it to the West and with the original being so full of Eastern promise plenty survived the cut. But here in its unadulterated Japanese form the true genius behind the Goemon series shines brightly drawing in many a gamer moth into its fun filled villages to gamble, eat, rest even have a blast on Gradius. Its enough just to try and take it all in – festival masks, ninja cats, the village drunk, the fisherman rushing through town with his catch, not forgetting Ohana chan in her kimono. Also known as the Legend of the Mystical Ninja.
Super Famicom
Sports
F Zero style racer with a medley of psychedelic racers looking like a futuristic take on the Tetsuwan Atom series. The game positively zips along with plenty of colour used in the tracks as well as the racers outfits.

Sports
Early baseball game from the sturdy SNK stable that uses that unique, exaggerated emotions of the players to capture the fun of the sport. Spoilt sluggers will lose their tempers snapping the bat in two at being out, but the mechanics are nice and simple making it easy to pick up and play for those lacking a passion for pitching and without an inkling for batting.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Light hearted platform action as the Asterix style lead character collects squashed opponents to use them as platform blocks when it a tight fix in order to progress. Plenty of variety in levels from pre historic to space age as the mosaic like picture is gradually pieced back together.

Platform
With cheery chip tunes to accompany the on screen platform action, the closest companion Genki can think of for those unfamiliar with Q Taros charms would the the New Smoo. Yet with our loveable ghost being able to float, the action more resembles a shoot em up as shots can be fired in between gobbling rice balls. Sadly a floating ghost was deemed too much for Western gamers and a cherub was used to replace him.
Known as Chubby Cherub in the West.
Famicom Cart
Action
Players ride on bikes like the speeders from Return of the Jedi and try to knock opponents into the on screen traps, such as laser beams. The speeder also has a gun to shoot itself as the screen forces the battle onwards.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Brings back the gaming fun with a unique twist on the platform genre in that it is played by a car. Drivers must cover as many of the platform levels as possible and in doing so complete the road they drive over. Some mightily impressive sprite rotation techniques as the players car changes direction or it fires a bullet into the pursuing police cars to spin them out of control. Nice backgrounds too with the Statue of Liberty and Big Ben guesting.
Famicom Cart
Platform
The pinnacle of platform entertainment with a sublime blend of power ups and powerful adversaries. Yet the real dazzling gem in this treasure chest is the sheer limitless imagination that Miyamoto san and his crew have poured in, the child-like wonderment that can be copied, but never surpassed.

Sports
Fans of the Commodore 64 cracker Kickstart will be right at home here as the fumes mass on this speedway simulator. A real chest of gold in Nintendo’s back catalogue that was updated to the N64. Fun from start to finish with big jumps and brave bends for those who refuse to relinquish grip on the throttle.
Famicom Cart
Shoot Em Up
Vertically scrolling shooting action as the players ship is encircled by sphere shields to try and survive. The enemies seem to fly at you like swordfish or flying fish and it’s a good idea to keep hammering the fire button to keep them at bay. Keeping blasting ensures a path through land based defences too.
Dreamcast
A Bit Special
A feisty demo disk with playable samples of Cool Boarders Burrrn, Shutoko Battle, Sonic Adventure International, Soul Calibur and Chu Chu Rocket. Also featured are movie demos of Shenmue, Space Channel 5, Dream Flyer, Virtua Striker 2 and Seaman.
Dreamcast
Action
Takes a plethora of vehicles from off roader, to vintage bus to big old trucker and places them into a scrap yard of doom where they must blow hunks of metal out of each other. Thrills and spills as the chase ensues with the four player mode being a total blast.
Super Famicom
Platform
Delightful, adorable platformer but don’t let the sweet Disney characters deceive the challenge at the heart of this example of how licensed games should be done. Konami delivers yet again.
Dreamcast
Rhythm
Pop a couple of maracas in the hands of a non-gamer and sit back and enjoy the show. Mould breaking, pure distilled fun from the Sonic Team.
Dreamcast
One on One Beat Em Up
Superb fighting series and worthy follow up which was never going to be as great a leap forward as between the first and second installments.
Sega Saturn
Puzzle
Light hearted puzzle and quiz title which excels in multiplayer especially with a multitap. Varied action keeps things fresh and ticking along very nicely.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Set in a spooky, abandoned school; your task is to save the children who have wandered in there from the kancho monster (if Genki’s Japanese is up to scratch!) Goes full circle with the FMV being so badly acted it becomes funny.
Sega Saturn
RPG
Based on the anime this RPG utilises the license to good effect by having fully animated battle scenes. The overall look of the game is more nostalgic with nicely detailed sprites. Warrants the yellow label warning.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
RPG
The anime cut sequences bring to mind the delightful Cities of Gold with their retro, 80s feel. Cheery chip tunes belt-out as players explore the delight of the town before the more dramatic music of the action based battles against snakes, skeletons and the giant Komodo Dragons.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Simulation
Lots of tweaking to the cars to be able to allow the team to savour top spot on the podium in this race simulation from the cult classic team of Laser Soft, an off-shoot of Telenet.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Simulation
A battle simulator that makes fine use of the CD format to splice retro anime cut-scenes between the action.
