Famicom Cart
Puzzle
An enjoyable playing card based game in the Tetris/Puyo Puyo/Columns mould when instead of blocks or squishy balls, players must align the cards to make flushes of the same suit or, for example, Jack, Queen, King. Pleasant chip tunes and bunny girls to complete the Eighties Vega theme.
GameBoy Original
Platform
Subtitled ‘Takahashi Meijin’. Old school platforming in all its springs, strawberry and skateboarding cliched brilliance.
Super Famicom
Simulation
Falcom produced strategy war game which is a continuation of the Dragon Slayer series. Set in a cutesy, medieval Europe allowing the developer plenty of license for the fantasy setting.
PS2
Action
Samurai themed action slicer set in feudal Japan from the crack Capcom break away unit Game Republic. Captures the essence of the period beautifully in the graphics, musical score and presentation and shows great promise from those old Onimusha hands.
Wii
Action
Classic gameplay rekindled on the Wii with its unique control method suited to the action as players must hot foot it up skyscrapers avoiding falling plant pots, helicopters, King Kong and even UFOs. A fall after so much hard work getting up fifty storeys is hard to bear making for some determined, precision gameplay. Split screen two player mode is real, frantic fun.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Overhead perspective attractive golf title with four player option. Maybe Genki should listen to the caddy’s advice more often..? Also known as Go For It Golf Boys.
XBOX 360
One on One Beat Em Up
Warming the cockles of side on scrapper starved gamers comes the sequel to the anime expose to satisfy the most demanding of fight fans. The all female cast is reminiscent of the seminal Asuka series, but unfortunately such high-res graphics were never a possibility on the humble PC Engine. Presentation is spot on with a wee nod to the doujin fan and a fine story mode with pre-bout banter between the cat like ladies. The title comes from the Arcana power which is chosen to help each character get through the bout. Great to see the ladies are still doing it in 2D. Keep them coming we requested and our pleas have been answered.
PSP
One on One Beat Em Up
The huge series has its roots here, but its hardly a humble first edition with delicious cel shaded sprites and plenty of visual pyrotechnics to truly cross the bridge between anime and gaming, even if it looks more like the bridge between the living and underworld at times. The PSP was designed for titles like this.
PS2
Simulation
An upbeat style to this dating sim featuring good old joystick waggling to power up the angry meter in chit-chat. Has its won humour too as players interact with the ladies across suburban Japan.
PS2
Sports
Enjoy a rack of pool or billiards with the expert help of Miss Keiko Yukawa, 15 times Japan Open Champion available in training mode.
Famicom Cart
Action
Unforgiving gameplay from the origin of the esteemed Nintendo Famicom series. Highly collectable. Goemon is known as Mystical Ninja in the Occident and is a Genki legend. ‘Ganbare’ means to do your best: enjoying the company of the townsfolk, but not forgetting to fight the odd ‘oni’ every now and then
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Simulation
Chinese board game spiced up by the addition of scantily clad bunny girl opponents. The staple of any Japanese game centre or arcade.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Solid little baseball title with sprites reminiscent of World Series Baseball on the C64. Recommended for those whose Engine collection lacks a baseball title.
PC Engine HU Card
Simulation
Little known strategy title from Nihon Computer Systems.
PC Engine CD ROM
RPG
Very cute and cartoony Hudson developed RPG starring a little dragon that grows as you gain experience into a bigger, beastly brute.
Famicom Cart
RPG
Falcom made the classic RPG genre their own over time and the roots of its slid oak can be found with this deep and involving adventure. Superb stuff with plenty of love and effort thrown in and it shows. Was released as the Legacy of Wizard in the US.
PC Engine CD ROM
Puzzle
Sci Fi setting to this anime inspired mahjong title with plenty of leg work having gone into making a very well presented game with plenty of material for the Engine cognoscenti.
PC Engine CD ROM
Quiz
A bizarre trip around town where players are quizzed on their choice of topic by its inhabitants. So those with a good knowledge of mange and anime (besides gaming) will progress to meet more of the towns unusual inhabitants.
PS2
Action
Capcom’s polish is more than evident as this epic samurai slasher captures gamers hearts and minds. Beautifully set in a Feudal Japan with plenty of adversaries straight from Japanese mythology. Thankfully the slash of steel can bring down even the biggest and baddest of boss monoliths.
Super Famicom
Platform
The Super Famicom has more platformers than commuters on the Yamanote Line first thing but this true classic platformer stands head and shoulders above the rest like an NBA player on the same train. Xandra is on a mission through the mystical land of Valkyrie to get medicine for his sick son. The main character looks like a green jelly baby but some of the gameplay is so ingenious and fresh, even after so many platform releases on the SFC. Tragically overlooked in the West. Xandra carries a tiger fork with which to attack enemies, but remains vulnerable if it gets stuck in the ground causing frantic panic to unwedge it. The star level is particularly remarkable as the platforms appear and disappear from view in a Tanabata inspired journey through the stars. This is the pure essence of gameplay that endeared fans to the format and many still wander the gaming scene in search of a return to such heady days. Bravo Namcot.
Super Famicom
Platform
Cracking Irem platform fun in their tie honoured tradition that sees our hero utilise his punk mohican hairstyle well in detaching it to use like a shuriken when the appropriate spray power up has been located. Bounding between cars as bald headed bad guys fire off volleys on machine guns in this pure, platform frolic.
