Nintendo Hardware
Controller
Designed to be used on one on one fighters such as a certain Capcom title whose name escapes me. The unusual ergonomic design looks a bit bizarre, but it works a treat fitting snugly and improving even Genki’s fight prowess and special move success rate.
Mega Drive
Shoot Em Up
Mega bosses and pretty level design make for a sizzling hot shooter that seems to be inspired by a few of its more illustrious counterparts. Still theres no shame here and the sum of the products add up to a fine trigger happy shmup. Stands for X-Dazedly Ray, in case you were wondering.
PS2
One on One Beat Em Up
3D incarnation of the much loved SNK treasure with evasive moves, ‘kick me when I’m down’ brutality and fast footed gameplay firmly on the offensive. Includes a mission mode for collecting various outfits and other unlockables. The church stage with stained glass windows looks stunning; indeed lighting on the whole has been cunningly employed. Also known as King of Fighters Maximum Impact.
NEO GEO CD
A Bit Special
A multi media disk containing, amongst other goodies, playable demo’s of King of Fighters 95, Fatal Fury 3, Samurai Spirits 2, Art of Fighting 2, Super Sidekicks 3 and Top Hunter. Also allows you to view info on other hit releases and to listen to various sound clips from SNK’s back catalogue.
PS4
Shoot Em Up
Moss excels under the weight of the series history taking it to Mach speed whilst respecting the ships and attack meters of the much-loved plane-based shooter. The hardware permits for new dimensions of bullet hell and its a good job for You Tube to be able to assess later levels, such is the pitiful progress Genki has made thus far. A fine title even considering the excellence attained in part IV that tips its wings to those that have served bravely before.
Famicom Cart
Action
The classic title involving digging holes, trapping the aliens and then digging them into the ground without getting caught. Comes in new fangles mode with some impressive sprites and the old school version for the real purists. The music is where these Compass Circle titles really excel and this is no exception. Its really possible to feel the love of the developers in this impressive labour of love.
Merchandise
Magazine
A release to celebrate all that is good and wholesome with the Mini SFC. Jammed packed with screenshots and hints.
Sega Hardware
Controller
A well designed steering wheel from Sega to make racing games far more enjoyable. The wheel tightens up as you steer to extremes and sits nicely back to the centre. Buttons and throttles are well positioned making it hard to fault this AM2 inspired wheel. There’s even a VMU slot for fastest times and this controller should help you clock up a few.
Dreamcast
Sports
Night time racing with blurry taillights, well illuminated road signs and realistic roadside scenery that adds much to the underground feel of illicit petrol head rallies. Includes the two player mode adding much longevity and excitement which was sadly shunned for the sequel.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Getting along with your friends with the occassional argument thrown in is the aim of this digital manga comic game.
PS2
One on One Beat Em Up
Stunningly cel shaded bringing the high energy of the Dragon Ball series out to delight fans of the series. Combatants take an over the shoulder perspective on goings on and the 3D world can be used to dodge an assault. Little compares to using one of the over the top projectile attacks and sending your opponent crashing through a building or mountain with the brute force.
PS2
One on One Beat Em Up
A very exciting foray to bring the series to life as never before on the PS2. Takes a realistic approach to representing the very unrealistic series.
Super Famicom
Puzzle
Very pleasant puzzler of the Puyo Puyo ilk but slightly more cerebral with some splendid power ups and fun two player match ups.
Nintendo 64
RPG
An epic RPG looking like Mario 64 made into an adventure quest with plenty of hidden locales to investigate. In a fantasy style, the battle sequences feature stunning pyrotechnics and good mechanics. Known as Quest 64 in the West.
Nintendo DS
Action
Club Nintendo exclusive but the ghost memberships were well worth the effort when playing this wee belter. Strangely expansive for a give away title (well for those with the required points) with atmospheric rain lashing down on the Goemon style towns through which our samurai be suited players stroll. Plenty of opportunities to test martial arts ability soon prevail with the mic being used to issue commands to your player such as kick or punch. Players can also transform into a lycra suited sentai with the feel of plenty of cheese and ham as in Ouendan as the over the top transformations take place. Multiplayer only for two or three players and players must work in true Wa harmony to beat the bad boss.
Nintendo DS
A Bit Special
A great learning tool for intermediate aficionados of the Japanese language which has simple problems and multi choice answers to make the most of the stylus. Nicely illustrated too and the interactive nature of the DS with effects and instant feedback make studying fun rather than a chore.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Sequel to the original 94 release and mean fighter, but actually the first conversion to the PSX. Plenty of specials and a guest appearance of Neo Geo Land, Japan as one of the stages. The dark and moody Korean stage with rain lashing down and burning tree gets Genki’s vote though. The game zips along even if the loading times aren’t quite as fast missing the Saturns extra cart.
Miscellaneous Games
Simulation
A compilation celebrating young Japanese boys’ love of vehicles with footage of bulldozers, ambulances, tourist buses, post vans, police cars and fire engines.
Famicom Cart
Sports
Nice chip tunes and sound effects so players know when the ball is going up and also, more importantly, when it is going to drop down for the catch. A very well thought out and nicely presented sports game that covers all bases. Known as Baseball Simulator 1.000 in the West.
Famicom Cart
Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
A long standing series unlike Genki when surrounded by the thugs in the game who soon gang up on those initially lacking the necessary martial skills. Yet the games appeal is strong as players meet plenty of characters on their way through the platform levels on to a showdown with the big boss. Playing like Double Dragon on platform levels makes for an interesting twist on the side scrolling beat ‘em up.
PS2
RPG
Capcom revisitings its old school Final Fight mechanics as you fight through the various dungeons to reach the boss in reassuringly familiar style. But the environs are as stylish as the three in game characters each with their own particular expertise in martial arts. An all action, ‘fighting RPG’ full of thrills.
