PC Engine HU Card

Here we have all the games in the PC Engine HU Card Section.
PC Engine HU Card
Simulation
Plays similar to Nectaris in that it’s a militaristic strategy title that’s quite easy to get into thanks to the almost Nintendo-esque way Masaya lead the player by the hand through the early stages. Yet once the simple control face is mastered the adventure really opens up. The Gaiserds of the title are the mecha robots of varying strengths and abilities that are placed throughout the space stages. When a ruck kicks off the animated sequences are very impressive for a HU based title.
PC Engine HU Card
Shoot Em Up
Rather bizarre titles seem to be Genki’s speciality on the Engine and the phallus shaped Honey does little to redress the balance. Well worth persevering with as the developers really get into the swing in later levels in this lesser known, vertically scrolling shooter.

PC Engine HU Card
Action
Packed with cultural references in the form of geta wearing devils, machine gun wielding octupuses and Chinese lions. Play as the phallus shaped Honey. Hopefully the designers had the ancient Japanese clay ‘Haniwa’ images in mind when designing this action title which uses a clever pseudo-3D. Well ahead of its era.
PC Engine HU Card
Platform
Zany platformer with the stars of a Japanese variety show Kato Cha and Ken Shimura. Bizarre goings generally centre around toliets: birds drop ‘unchi’ from the sky, the pair can fart to dispatch enemies – even energy power ups come shaped as toilets. Interestingly, the American version had the fart attack removed proving toilet humour may not be universal after all.
PC Engine HU Card
A Bit Special
Enjoy the legend of Momotaro which is a well known fairytale deep in the Japanese psyche and rich in oni demons and intriguing cultural references. Just keep an eye on Momotarou as he pops to the local ladies onsen.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Overhead perspective racing game where competitors jostle for position. Get left too far behind and rather than scroll out you get bumped up to the pace automatically. However too many bump ups and you have to retire. Slick presentation and prize money to buy upgrades, but multiplayer is where its really at.
PC Engine HU Card
Shoot Em Up
A great little cartoony shooter that allows free movement in the helicopter complete with under carriage feet.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Pleasant, relaxing old school 18 holer complete with paper course map. The St. Andrews of golfing games.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Solid little baseball title with sprites reminiscent of World Series Baseball on the C64. Recommended for those whose Engine collection lacks a baseball title.
PC Engine HU Card
RPG
Fantasy three – quarter perspective RPG set in a European country with plenty of wizards, witches, black magic and sorcery.
PC Engine HU Card
Simulation
Very enjoyable and popular war sim in a futuristic style with hex based on screen representation of your army nicely presented. Best savoured in two player where the battle to take down an opponents base can get quite heated.
PC Engine HU Card
Action
Any title combining ninja’s, kunoichi (female ninja’s), shadowmen, snipers and fire ninja’s can’t be bad. Ninja Warriors is a fine conversion of Taito’s late eighties coin-op smash with the only feature lacking being the Darius style three sectioned screen.
PC Engine HU Card
Shooter
Nicely done conversion of the arcade smash, unfortunately missing the Uzi controller. Uses a cross hair marker instead of light gun in a similar vein to the Neo Geo classic Nam 75. The gun toting hero is hard as nails.
PC Engine HU Card
RPG
Played from the cockpit of a Mech with the view being out into the tunnels in which scores are settled with alien and enemy troops. Its possible to visit the shop to stock up on new kit, get a few repairs with the mechanic or even get oiled at the bar. Success mean the release of a Playstation version too.
PC Engine HU Card
Platform
PC Kid is to the Engine what Sonic and Mario are to Sega and Nintendo. But Genki reckons he could have them both in a fight using his forehead to attack enemies as he does. Fun filled platform romp with original twists in an often cliched genre. Also known as ‘Genjin’ and ‘Bonk’.
PC Engine HU Card
Platform
PC Kid’s giant head comes in handy to deliver cranium crushing Glasgow kisses to enemies that come at you surfing, fishing, even catching insects. Full of fresh ideas. Also known as ‘Genjin’ or ‘Bonk 2’ or perhaps even ‘Bonk’s Revenge’.’
PC Engine HU Card
Simulation
Bullfrog’s seminal god sim made it hard to resist improper gameplay such as sending in the odd earthquake to wake up your people. Made extra popular and collectable on the Engine by being one of the few titles to include a battery back up on the HU Card.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Power Drift was a monster of a mechanised, car based coin-op released in the late eighties. Asmik has done an honourable job of the conversion, keeping the jostle for positions and this remains a fun reminder of a golden era of Sega arcade dominance.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Side scrolling football game (or soccer to avoid confusion.) Nice newscaster style presentation and all the elements of a fun, early 90’s arcade kick about. No Champions League winner, but a definite UEFA Cup place contender.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
First in the long running Power League baseball series from big hitting Hudson Soft.

PC Engine HU Card
Sports
A realistic approach to the sport with real stadiums such as Saitama and Yokohama as well as classically named teams such as ‘Straws’, ‘Fibers’ and ‘Wholes’. Nice home run sequence.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Enjoyable game of rounders with PC Engine sponsored stadiums and teams based on their real life counterparts, just with slight adjustments to avoid litigation. So forget playing as Hiroshima Carp, best go for the Cark.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Despite the cartoony look to the cover, this baseball game is actually quite an accurate representation in the C64 World Series mould with both pitching, batting and fielding all working well with good use of the screen to provide the full package. Full title: Kore Ga Pro Baseball 89 (This is Pro Baseball 89.)
PC Engine HU Card
Shooter
The arcade classic R-Type gets the near perfect home conversion (albeit of only the first four levels…) The sheer originality of Irem’s opus has yet to be bettered. Who can forget the level one alien embryo boss?
PC Engine HU Card
Shoot Em Up
Giger inspired blaster needing no introduction. A must have for any shooter fans. Many a joypad has suffered under the extreme pressure of R-Type Bydo’s bosses! Levels 5-8 of the arcade mammoth.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Motorbike racing game with two player spilt screen challenges possible. Some well designed courses to choose from including Irem Osaka, Fuji, and the legendary Suzuka. You don’t just choose your racer but a whole team including mechanic and ‘campaign girl’ whose role has yet to be clarified. Known in Japan as Racing Damashii.
PC Engine HU Card
Simulation
Comedy adventure involving top spy ‘Sadakichi Seven’ trying to capture the Natto (fermented beans) organisation.
