Seven levels in all in this verticle blaster with a well crafted organic feel in contrast to the usual space stations. The sea level is also worthy of a mention for squeezing every drop out of the Engine hardware so well. Some cracking power ups but they are drip fed to you in game to make sure they are fully appreciated. The ship is capable of bulking up to looking more like a mechanical cicada insect. A very tidy, if little known, shooter underlining Telenet’s cult popularity.

Puyo Puyo is Japanese onomatopoeia for something soft to touch, such as the jelly like balls that fall from the sky to be aligned with similar colours in this saccharine soaked, kawaii puzzler.

Unique combination (well excluding the prequels) of RPG and quiz title. The RPG elements are very well done in the bygone era sprite style and make for a gaming world that is far easier to get emotively involved with than some CG attempts.

Colourful quiz game based on the end of year quiz held at graduation ceremonies. Questions are on the likes on naming the best selling tune of the band made famous by Johnny Rotten and Sid Vicious (whose name we cant write here, or fear being blocked as spam forever more.) An assuring title from a golden era of PC Engine gaming.

One on One Beat Em Up
Excellent cinematics make this a must for fans of Takahashi’s mad Ranma universe. All the favourite characters are present with their unusual, incredibly wacky special moves. Starts off innocently enough at the local public bath before mayhem breaks out battling a bath stool tossing Jiisan, then its off to the gym to take on sempai’s sister in a gymnastic martial fest. All nicely interspersed with animated sequences. Just steer clear of gambling with the King of Hearts who pops up – he knows the cards too well.

Choose from 18 sexy Japanese female idol opponents as you battle your way towards the final showdown in the evil castle. Very nicely presented even if most of the girls have 80’s style haircuts adding to the retro appeal.

Not a pirate title, but nor officially licensed given the adult content of the game. There are two modes of play: Captured Rabbit and Sailor Z. Gameplay in the former involves three options: look, touch, and chat. With a title that translates as happy rabbit, thankfully no animals appear. Sailor Z is clearly a very unlicensed anime adventure spin off of the Sailor Moon series with the girls in pursuit of the evil Dark Prince that won’t be appearing on GMTV.

Known as ‘Starblazers’ in the West, this space simulation is based on the true classic, which even has its own exhibitions in Japan and its own distinct feel in an over crowded market place. Yamato is a flying naval ship and also the believed to be the essence of the Japanese spirit. The game captures the romantic overtones of the original anime.

Superb shooter where players get to customise a mean mecha robot instead of relying on power ups to blast bits out of the opposition. Like Assault Suits Valken on the SFC, fellow fighters will come to the players aid as the plot unfolds through the slickly produced cut sequences. Backgrounds are full of inspiration and very well executed with parallax scrolling to put many programmers to shame. A master blaster.

Contains two playable demos of about one hour of Tengai Makyo II (including the lavish introduction sequence as well) and about two hours of Dragon Slayer. Nice little sample of two very good RPG’s.

Hudson have performed a commendable job of converting the Seibu Kaihatsu sprite shooter adding in the CD quality soundtrack over the standard Hu Card release. Only those most grizzled gaming vets need apply – especially if you can keep your eyes on two different areas of the screen at once and have a steady trigger finger when it comes to the surface bombs. (Apologies for the poor cover images – the reflective cover doesn’t scan well.)

Lovely, bubbly J Pop tracks to appropriately accompany the fine ladies that star in this Mahjong face off with lots of dignity on the line. Popular in the arcades, the home version allows players to get acquainted in more intimate surrounds. Well liked series.

Essentially Tenchi gets into a bit of mischief as players control his actions at varying locales as the story unfolds dependant on the players actions. Winning over the ladies hearts is what its all about, getting them to confess, like the players, into being big Tenchi fans.

Stunning conversion of the Capcom arcade version and unfortunately as rare as rocking horse dung. Loses a few of the parallax layers and the two player option, but thats about all. Genki wishes all the Dynasty Warrior series were this much fun as you steam into to Mongolian hordes sword aloft on horseback in a plot losely based on Chinese mythology.

Sprawling RPG the likes of which gets fans of the genre twitching with excitement as players explore from the dank dungeons, across fiery lava caverns, via the more assuring surrounds of the local town to the peaks of an icy mountain. Telenet have their own distinctive style both in terms of graphics and gameplay and it comes across as very refreshing as a result.

Davis Cup takes a simulation approach to the game, with interesting split screen approach allowing for good two player rallies as there is no far side disadvantage. One for the strawberries and cream munching Henmaniacs.
