Play God and use your human representative to bring a bit of justice to the land using a massive sword in the side scrolling platform sections. Exquisitely realised with wondrously detailed environs and an aural experience that is simply divine. There are also Sim City style planning sections where you help the villagers rebuild a peaceful existance.
GameBoy Original
Platform
Subtitled ‘Takahashi Meijin’. Old school platforming in all its springs, strawberry and skateboarding cliched brilliance.

Genki Gurus will know it only takes a few Japanese ghosts, a wise sage and a few ninjas and Genki is sold on the concept. Where Ja Ja excels is utilising a smaller player character to allow so much going on on screen. A superb conversion and a tip top example of the genre. Oh, did we mention riding on giant frogs?
Famicom Cart
Platform
Nice scale to the sprites on the platforming world allowing players to take in the potential hazards and escape routes. Known as Agina’s Prophecy.
Famicom Cart
Platform
More shurikens than you could shake a stick at as this ninja themed platformer journeys through feudal Japan and into the spiritual realm at times too. Imaginative levels such as the extending and contracting bamboo pole section and bizarre bosses drawing on Japanese ghosts and folk stories.
Mega Drive
Platform
Whilst the gameplay is not too cerebral, the fluid animation must rank as some of Disney’s finest in a video game and rivals that of Prince of Persia. A real joy to behold as Aladdin uses his sword and a limited supply of apples to glide through the imaginative, well realised scenarios including the market, desert and castle.

Switch
Platform
A game with real history, dug up and dusted off and looking very snappy in its new incarnation. The old school look is integrated into the game from time to time in a nod to its roots. The underwater, cavern and desert levels may be well known, but the execution and level design is worthy of the weighty label. The Air Zonk PC Kid tribute is a blast too.

Mega Drive
Platform
Fantasy platform adventure with game girl Alisia being helped out on her quest to avenge her fathers death by four creatures: a dragon, a couple of reptiles and a ball of fire. The ability to unleash lightning bolts also helps somewhat. As is often the case on the Mega Drive, it received a greater print run Stateside than in Japan due to the Genesis’ runaway success in the US, making the Japanese version the more collectable.
Miscellaneous Games
Platform
Released as the third instalment of Alex Kidd in the West, Anmitsu is a bit of a rascal princess who takes on platform ninjas in a blend of old Japan plus a few new bits of the modern world such as cake shops. Plenty of fun and good, early Sega gameplay roots with a nice blend of action and chit chat between levels.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Beautifully illustrated in the style of crayons, think Yoshi’s Island for the Famicom. The character sprites are all very cute and the tunes are upbeat in keeping with the action. The dino hero’s ability to roll adds to his versatility. A Japanese flavour to the action too with walking riceballs and cartoony squids.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Captures the comedy of the source material as Bakabon clings on to the platform levels that must be negotiated, albeit with the help of a bowl of noodles power up, before tackling the madcap bosses. Full title Heisei Tensai Bakabon.
Nintendo 64
Platform
Rare’s values shine through as virtuously as Nintendo’s in its quest to distil pure, gaming fun. And the partnership between the two was never as bosom buddy as it was on the Nintendo 64. Few can match Nintendo’s eye for detail, but Rare have savoured the gaming moment with this fine action title.
Nintendo 64
Platform
Sorely missed from the Nintendo brand with Rare having attained near Big N standards in its games and especially with the tweaks of the sequel. The gaming is pure, the worlds are well realised (with plenty of play testing) and the multilayer mini games add a generous extra helping to the cauldron.

The Battletoad games are very collectable and its easy to see why in this Rare crafted version. Cliched some of the locations may be, but when the execution is of such high standard its easy to see why they become much imitated and rarely bettered. Fun, wholesome action that squeezes every iota out of the hardware.

Super Famicom

Attains the Capcom level of polish as if Walt himself had been watching over the production. The imagination into the graphical effects sets the atmospheric powder keg off a treat such as with the lashing rain. And our beloved beast is a versatile creature ensuring the player soon warms to his dexterous manoeuvres.

Organic platform action blended with RPG elements. Unusual, creative adversaries await alongside the usual moving platforms and the less ordinary switches to button bashing tests of strength.
Super Famicom

The huge Sonic Mario Rivalry of the 90s had a cost on the many fronts the battle was fought. Busby was an attempt to gain a mascot for Accolade, no doubt the start of the bean counting men getting involved in programming. Despite his lack of charisma, Busby has enough abilities to endear himself to gamers as he speeds through the levels Sonic style grabbing balls of wool instead of rings. Sonic in wolfs clothing for the Super Famicom. Full Western title is Busby in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Platform
Clever side scrolling platform action where players must use their cunning in order to add to the screens in extra platforms, moving ramps and dissolving blocks to help the builderman get across the screen. Enjoyable and not too taxing, but still gives plenty of satisfaction when a plan comes together.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Unusual vertically scrolling shooter set on a background of ever changing coloured panels as players pummel opposing vessels to gain valuable dollars to spend on upgrading the ship and all important fuel. Unusual in the fact that players must keep scoring in order to keep the money coming in to progress.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Delightful chip tunes add a cheery, medieval banquet feel to the old school platform action. The hero is a pixelated Robin Hood look-a-like who nimbly negotiates moving platform lifts to collect the keys to clear the cavernous levels.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Brings back the gaming fun with a unique twist on the platform genre in that it is played by a car. Drivers must cover as many of the platform levels as possible and in doing so complete the road they drive over. Some mightily impressive sprite rotation techniques as the players car changes direction or it fires a bullet into the pursuing police cars to spin them out of control. Nice backgrounds too with the Statue of Liberty and Big Ben guesting.
Sega Saturn
Platform
One of the first releases on the Saturn and fondly remembered by the Genki team. Nice, colourful 2D platformer forced into 2.5D by the hysteria for 3D graphics when the Saturn and Playstation were released.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Platform
Based on the Japanese TV series of the same name by none other than the genius Hayao Miyazaki. A varied platform romp with beautiful Miyazaki san inspired moments.
Super Famicom
Platform
Hard as nails run and gun delight from Konami which saw the series hit a real pinnacle. Expert use of mode 7 keeps the frentic action varied and boiling to the point of nuclear fission. Also uses side on and over head levels to keep the action varied. The two player mode is a massive help towards cracking this tough nut.
Super Famicom
Platform
7 Ups cool little emblem is very slickly animated and this plays like a real treat. Nothing too unexpected but the execution is pretty close to flawless as the wee spot in shades strolls through the brashly themed gaming worlds.
