One of the best branches in Nintendo’s laurel rests on the GameCube and adds co-operative two player gameplay with one to drive and one to take care of the items, cranking up the entertainment. The classic ingredients are all still present with battle mode one of them, but the weapons can now be stolen adding to the dream finishes of knocking out an opponent to whiz past them at the finish line. The added tactical dimension is how long to hold on to weapons when they can be pinched away.

A Bit Special
A must for multiplayer adding so much more enjoyable by beating those you hold dear to the mini party games. Simple to pick up and play, but the fun really draws out the competitive spirit.
Gamecube
Action
Well-planned levels and deep space atmospherics that would make even Sigourney Weaver jump. Its easy to understate just what a fine job has been made of transferring one of the most cherished SFC platformers into full 3D and maintaining the series high standards. Cavernous levels lit up by incredible strafe effects and incredible attention to detail.
Gamecube
Puzzle
For the uninitiated Mr Driller must suffer the threat of repetitive stress injury and frantically drill from the surface to the goal. Drilled blocks of the same colour collapse presenting a hazard so careful thought is the order of the day. But at the same time limit is set by depleting oxygen reserves. The lovely sprites mask a truly hardcore experience when freebased from its graphical candy, but when its so easy to get into and so sweetly coated it’s a true pleasure to drill deeper. Features a world tour with themed levels from around the globe (and a fine Indiana Jones tribute) and a frantic multiplayer mode where up to players race to the goal. Plenty of extras too and smooth presentation.

One on One Beat Em Up
Outstanding graphical talent must make opponents of the Naruto series despair, such is the flair which the fox spirited ninja and accomplices are realised. And the graphical flavour really excels in four player mode – if only there was more time to appreciate it. The multiplayer grapples work well with the addition of auto targeting missing from Guilty Gear and ilk that really makes it workable. The counter moves to diffuse an opposing technique also add to the tactical nous required to flourish in this ninja world. But the super specials unleash purely devastating results.

And the graphical flavour really excels in four player mode – if only there was more time to appreciate it. The multiplayer grapples work well with the addition of auto targeting missing from Guilty Gear and ilk that really makes it workable. The game engine has been under scrutiny too with combos more rounded and the additional ability to keep an adversary in the air with a few additional well-timed strikes. The counter moves to diffuse an opposing technique also add to the tactical nous required to flourish in this ninja world. But the super specials remain in there with devastating effect.

One on One Beat Em Up
Beautiful ‘new age’ anime graphics with a cel-shaded, mean and moody look making this a must have for fans of the Naruto series. Slick presentation and seamless cut scenes as you’d expect from an anime tie in. Ginormous o.t.t. special moves and solid play mechanics mean even those not aware of the series will have plenty to get their teeth (and fists) into here.

Sports
The bright lights reflect on the court as the players pumps squeak away to accompany the authentic commentary and swift end to end action.
Gamecube
Puzzle
Compilation of three of the finest puzzlers to come out of Kyoto: Dr. Mario, Yoshi’s Cookie and the lesser known Panel De Pon. Remixed soundtracks, crisp, easily distinguished graphics with nice, retro sound effects. Whilst most veteran gamers will be familiar with the other two, Panel De Pon is possibly the unsung hero of the collection with tiles being switched around to clear lines in time honoured tradition. Simple, yet deadly addictive.
Gamecube
Action
Full on compilation of all out action mini games that utilise the relentless pacing of the anime to be crammed full of visual impact as tough as the attacks themselves. Memorable games include the parachuting sequence with an octopus parachute in a bizarre twist on the Pilotwings series. A rhythm action take on a RPG fight sequence in tidy cel shaded sprites and the mayhem of random objects reigning down from above whilst under attack make it hard to encapsulate the chaos into words.

A request from Shigeru Miyamoto lead to the orginal creator of Pac Man producing this update where in a novel twist the player can control the ghosts. Available only as a demo disk from Club Nintendo, Pac Man is reinvented by controlling the ghosts making for amazing multiplayer matches. The way it works is to have Pacman play via the GameBoy Advance link up so that the ghosts cannot see Pac’s position, only that of the 3D maze on the television screen.

Akira’s involvement helps give Rockman a timely boost on his fifteenth anniversary with very smooth cel shaded graphics bringing the mega franchise up to modern expectations. But its ultimately a return to the old school roots of the series that make the platforming sections a real joy. Includes the broadcast quality anime intro which is from the Japanese TV series.
Gamecube
RPG
Such a fabulous world lends itself to becoming a role playing game and it looks a treat in cel shaded glory as Megaman whizzes around getting into the turn based battles Genki certainly wouldn’t challenge such a well-equipped character too.
Gamecube
Action
Moves like a YouTube speed play video as Sonic zips across the platform levels with forays into 3D platforms too to take breath. The F-Zero tribute race stage is well worth a ride. Can also link to the GBA games to add extra special options.
Gamecube

A compilation package of monstrous proportions containing parts one, two and three of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic and Knuckles plus Sonic Pinball. This compendium on the life of the spikey one also contains versions of Sonic 3D Blast and Dr. Eggman’s Mean Bean Machine specially tailored for the Japanese release. Despite their age this package offers hours of high velocity gameplay and is a great way to savour a trip down memory lane Sega style. To be this good indeed takes ages.
Gamecube
Action
Before Rares defection came a journey into the Star Fox world where players get to explore the universe and enjoy a could bit of paw to hand combat with our old buddy Fox McCloud. Develops the story and series well complete with all of Fox’s friends.
Gamecube
Shooter
Fox is unleashed to utilise his firepower on foot in this 3D blast. Or should that be on paw? Nintendo pace it well and the dramatic scenes have lashings of their triple A fairy dust. Plenty of interjections from General Pepper and Fox’s pals.
Gamecube
Platform
To tire of Mario is to lack a zest of life itself, such is the childlike twinkle in Miyamoto sans eye that shines through like the dazzling lens flair in ample evidence. Certainly exudes sunshine and a wondrous gaming world to explore.
Gamecube
Action
Sega uses its cute monkey to promote a devious version of Dizzy with pixel-perfect stops and a fine sense of momentum needed to complete the levels. Fun and never the play engine’s fault.
Gamecube
Action
More monkey mayhem as players take a spin inside the Monkey Balls and roll through the levels collecting bananas. A feel for momentum must be attained to avoid dropping off levels, but the ball physics are well designed making it always, alas, the players fault for taking a tumble or making a simian slip. Full of Sega’s colourful charm.

RPG
An epic series with a monumental version on the GameCube, so well suited with its cel-shaded sprites blurring the boundaries between anime and gaming, that it got its own limited edition console release. A real crest of the wave in terms of the series.

Action
Classic title from a golden era of gaming where players take on the role of knight tasked with clearing mazes. Set apart by Namcots flair for appealing sprite graphics and some fine gameplay blending quick thinking and fast pacing to create a title as loved today in updates such as this and on virtual consoles.
Gamecube
Action
A chance to sample the delights of this theme park and its BackDraft, ET, WaterWorld, Jaws and Back to the Future rides through mini games. Theres also a small amount of trivia regarding Universal films. Throwing barrels at Jaws or getting ET home on time, what more could you ask for?
Gamecube
Action
Capcom continues its highly original schedule with this cel shaded movie maker. Wacky action hero Joe must keep beating the bad guys in order to keep the cameras rolling with plenty of directors tricks up his pink lycra sleeve such as slow down and speed up for when things get a bit hairy.
Gamecube
Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
Drawing on retro super heroes clad in Lycra and the great tradition of transforming into the ultimate hero found in Japan come Viewtiful Joe. The cel shaded look suits the over the top retro ham perfectly, almost as good a fit as Joes costume. And the large play areas allow players space to play their game to try and take down their opponent with as much style as the game itself. Highly commended for being fresh and fun.
Gamecube
Sports
The solid Virtua Striker engine refined with added management options. Where as the passing system isn’t perfect, this arcade classic still can set the heart a flutter with some very special goals. The first to introduce a very clever crossing system and the potential for wing wizardry.

Minna no Golf style graphics with fine attention to detail such as the rainbow after the shower and weather sound effects adding to the uber kawaii look and feel good factor, yet its the unique control system untilising the analogue stick to make shots that makes Wai Wai head the leaderboard. Proper course design with realistic 3D so you can visually judge the run of the greens. And the cussing and yelping of the players helps endear you to the game further. Four player mode with just a single controller too.

Genki feared the worse when the news leaked of a GC debut sequel of the delightful Wave Race. Nintendo well and truly delivered the goods keeping the originals relentless, arm pit tingling gameplay and improving the water transparencies beyond anything seen before. Truly miraculous effects that remain cutting edge even today.
