PS2
RPG
Epic escapades with superb cinematics spliced with clever 3D combat that gets the player involved in the action rather than observing. Incredible production values: the man hours are visible which ever way you spin to avoid the cold steel sword zipping past your ears. Yet again Square Enix raises the bar.
Super Famicom
Action
A varied game based on the Touchstone Pictures film with very stunning graphics considering its early release. Plenty of fight and flight action with lavish presentation that stays true to the source material.
PS Vita
One on One Beat Em Up
Colourful eye candy masking a brute of a fighting engine as Arc System get hands on to show off another addition to their fine fighting works. Another superb scrapper on their CV of many: the developer has really honed their fight engine to be awarded master status. The saccharine sweetness continues on in the anime presentation. Top of the class.
Dreamcast
Sports
Whittle away a few peaceful hours on Lake Paradise trying to land a big bass renowned for their fighting ability. Tactical choice of lure is essential as you cajole the bass to take the bait. Once you have a bite the line tension gauge must be carefully monitored to stop the line from snapping. Arcade and DC original modes to select with the latter being far more forgiving than the arcade mode in which you must land sufficient weight within the time limit to you move on to the next stage. Failure to bag anything will leave you gutted.
Miscellaneous Games
A Bit Special
The DragonBall games are the most collectable on the Playdia system showing off its capabilities to stream animation with fine voice acting. This animated adventure doesn’t require too much intervention from the player, but seamlessly slips between one sleek sequence to the next in the fun and frantic saga. And its place as a hardware demo is unquestioned. This is the rarer of the DBZ releases being the Space Saga. Known in Japan as Shin Saiyan Jin Metsu Kaikaku Uchu Hen.
PC Engine CD ROM
RPG
Based on the Bond style anime, Cobra is a smooth talking dude with a gun built into his arm. Travelling through space, Cobra must focus on the task in hand. And for him that’s no mean feat! Also known as ‘Space Adventure Cobra II .’
Mega Drive
Sports
Realistic golf game employing an impressive 3D engine to realisticly realise the Hawaiian course. The sun shifts too producing a warm glow of early evening on the back nine. A fine stroll in the park with good interface.
PC Engine CD ROM
Puzzle
Mahjong themed puzzle game with plenty of bizarre characters and both training and tour modes of play.
PC Engine CD ROM
Simulation
Set in a grim future where nations battle for control of the earth’s depleted resources, this is a turn based war game.
PC Engine CD ROM
Puzzle
The classic puzzle title where players take on the role of admirals to negotiate the mine scattered seas to negotiate a safe channel.
PC Engine CD ROM
Sports
Baseball title from Masaya with cute, cartoony players and a sensible view on proceedings making it highly playable like the C64 title World Series. Four stadiums to slug for home and in game events to spice things up when least expected.
Merchandise
Merchandise
Delightful and stylish set of playing cards as Nintendo gets back to grass roots and its original form of the business. Celebrates the Zelda series in style – the art is so delectable they could easily be framed.
Super Famicom
Simulation
A curio game that requires an adaptor to allow a Barcode Battler to be hooked up to the game to bring useful power points to fights. The gameplay itself is a traditional battle sim with plenty of super deformed robots needing bringing down to size.
Mega CD
RPG
Originally on the Commodore Amiga, this occidental isometric RPG is based on Norse mythology. Ragnarok, the ultimate battle, is raging on earth and three of the gods have had their weapons stolen. To retrive them they give special powers to the chosen one, a mere mortal and thats where your mission begins.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Zap zips down the slopes with plenty of glisten to the graphics as players jump or switch feet gliding down the four courses. Plenty of energy appropriate to a youthful and exciting sport.
PS2
One on One Beat Em Up
Plenty of characters to choose from the rich source material of the Marvel Comics and Capcom back closets. The sequel was no slouch, yet Capcom improves and finely hones with its expert hand. But despite the presence of Jill from Biohazard and Sakura from Street Fighter, Genki remains resolutely a Spidey fan. A very rare find on the PS2 as one of the platforms (possibly any platforms) finest 2D titles. Comes with added gallery. Subtitled New Age of Heroes.
PS2
Action
Captures the heat of being involved in a huge battle with the player fulfilling vital missions utilising a spear in the true martial tradition. Atmospheric lighting as laterns burn brightly to illuminate the enemy hideout. Perfecting the ability to sweep away the army of ten thousand is a must.
PS2
Sports
Without wishing to sound like a car advert (and this game often looks like a car commercial), the smooth ride is assisted by the glide of the handling and the slick update of backgrounds with a high frame rate. Never before had such lighting effects been seen and the half light between light and day demonstrates this remarkably.
Nintendo DS
RPG
Set years before the third instalment, players build up a merry band of monsters, plenty of tactical nous and a dose of heavy weaponry to take on various missions of real time tactical strategy. The game draws players in to its grasp with compelling gameplay and great use of the touch screen allowing for fast paced stand offs.
Playstation
Platform
Genki may be going soft, but we miss the day when you could find a safe spot on the screen and simply blast away until the boss destructs. With a slight pang towards a greater challenge, these bad boys demand not only full attention to weak spots, but also to keeping an eye on the platforms to avoid tumbling to boss rush purgatory. Rats!
XBOX 360
Shoot Em Up
Unusual twist on the shooter genre with G Rev putting a isometric slant on proceedings as two players (or the CPU plus one player) battle it out amongst some huge, spiralling bosses trying to deflect shots onto opponents. Occasion power ups lead to a vast transformation of your ship to unleash the mother of all shooter assaults on a suitably dwarfed opponent. Being Naomi based would have made for a fine DC conversion, as such the 360 takes more DC refugees under its all encompassing wing.
