Playstation
Shooter
Impressive draw distance and frame rate as someone has found the light switch for this zippy sequel. Attentive looks at the map radar are a must as false walls have to be blown down from time to time besides the odd switch to flip. Luckily our mecha packs a decent punch of weaponry to survive the claustrophobic levels. Known as Epidemic in the West.
Super Famicom
Simulation
Isometric battle simulation allowing Bandai to treat fans of the mecha soap opera to some fine graphical trickery with nice animation and dramatic cut scenes. Genki only holds a basic grasp of the long running saga, but what’s clear is a fine battle simulation with plenty of polish.
Super Famicom
RPG
Fine RPG with fantasy atmosphere along with an array of excellently designed characters that come to life from the story board. Levelling up is essential to see ogres heads roll.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Sports
Solid slugger of the ball with plenty of home runs. Featuring real teams in Japan: can you be a Giant or end up a Carp in the pond? Not an over populated genre on the Engine CD.
Playstation
RPG
Namco maintains its impeccable standards as it fill the disks with sublime graphics complete with reflections and amazing attention to detail. Yet it is the slick and seamless combat and emotional involvement, no doubt boosted by the vast amount of voice acting, which ensures this flies like a bird.
PS3
Action
Pretty gruesome with players taking to the narrow confines of the slum and its best not to hang around with the dull glint of a machete never too far behind. Clever programming to not keep the gaming world too open and assist players without feeling the restraint. Not for the faint hearted.
PC Engine CD ROM
Simulation
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery then Macross creator Kawamori-san should be honoured by this space epic set in a not so distant future.
Figures
Figure
Delightful off shoot from Capcom’s mammoth Monster Hunter series. Ten different figures to collect: five different types, each in a different costume. Nice blend of modern and new Japan in the designs.
GameBoy Advance
Simulation
Trading card game with Konami’s class shining through like the beams of sunlight in its European style fantasy world.
GameBoy Original
Sports
Hawking back to the days when Arsene Wenger and Gary Lineker had their names always uttered with an honourific ‘san’ suffix comes J League Winning Eleven with a fluid engine and good use of the systems hardware to bring back the league razmatazz.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Very solid 3D fight characters with ginormous weapons and seamless cuts to the anime it is based upon. With a full complement of the voice actors, the setting of the game is done perfectly. Gamreplay is like a more forgiving Bushido Blade with shadowy, candle lit levels.
Mega Drive
Sports
From the publishers of crack shmup Eliminate Down comes this two-course wonder with Japanese and American rounds to sample. Up to four players can participate for the hole or keep a tally of the overall score in tournament mode. An accomplished title.
PS2
RPG
The Titanic of gaming as Squaresoft really find their rhythm on the hardware to produce a stunning piece of software. Its full mastery of the hardware is as clear as the water transparencies, yet the thread of strong gameplay and story telling remain undiminished since the Famicom days. A real gamers fantasy and well worthy of a PS3 update.
Playstation
RPG
From the anime series comes this spin off adventure with original story and plenty of stunningly realised scenes.
Famicom Disk System
Sports
A well established golf manga and a game make for a good combo in Genki’s humble opinion with the colour and intrigue of the manga source material adding fun and adventure as players challenge Grand Canton still ravines alongside the robotic, clean cut lines of the futuristic level.
PSP
Action
Genki had great trouble resisting this title which combines two of Japan’s great loves in food and gaming. The series runs in Shonen Jump and besides the fight action, delightful dishes of culinary, gourmet grade cooking are served up to boost the player get through a particularly tricky boss run in. Be it the huge crocodiles, King Kong gone run, Yeti or even the electric eels; an empty stomach makes for a poor fight. The scaling works well displaying a vast, vibrant play area and helping the bosses show off their might.
Super Famicom
A Bit Special
Paint package for the Nintendo which utilises the mouse very well and has slick presentation as you’d expect for a Nintendo title. As a Mario game very collectable too. Not only drawing facilities but you can produce animations and music too with colour in pictures of Mario for the less budding artists. Also includes an insect swatting game to improve mouse skills.
Super Famicom
RPG
There are collectors who strive to collect every game Squaresoft has released and with such packaging it is easy to understand why that is. More than worthy of an English language translation with some emotion stirring moments in, some Chocobo must have had his head in the sand in Squares Overseas Department. There are some who feel the FF series lost its innocence in the shift from sprite based to the 32 Bit era.
Super Famicom
RPG
It’s the music which stirs the heart, gives a sense of foreboding, announces pageantry and plays such a huge part in this epic Enix title. The hardware’s limitations forced the programmers into clever fogging techniques and great use of mode 7 to produce a treat of a gaming world, both reassuring and unnerving at times of unrest. Hats off to Enix.
Mega Drive
Sports
Joe Montana was quite a player and few will have missed his charming Mega Drive title which was as popular as Genesis back in the 90s. Simple interface and good action with fun two player bouts make this the football game to recommend to fans of any shape of ball.
Famicom Cart
Sports
Fine Famicom family fun as players ruin a good walk by following the ball around the course. Nice animations of the player and the split screen map works well to set the standard for many golf games to follow.
