PSP
One on One Beat Em Up
Creates a 3D fighter in the Naruto mould using cel shaded sprites that literally make the manga comes to life on the PSPs crisp screen. Thankfully the gratuitous violence the series is famous for is missing with this being a Cero A release, but it doesn’t
distract from the gruff, moody atmosphere. Destructible environs add to the excitement of bouts. Arc System Works has quite a CV of fight titles and it adds another title to its burgeoning belt.
Playstation
Puzzle
Fans of the Jaguar CD may be as rare as the snow leopard, but those familiar with the add on may recognise this as Baddies given a Japanese make over by Banpresto. Players control little bald dudes within their own world in a fun simulation that certainly cant be accused of taking itself too seriously.
Playstation
Rhythm
Time to get deep and funky as those with rhydhm strut their stuff to the likes of M Flo, Tiger Yamato and The Bald Head in this foot tapping compilation of tidy J Beats.
Wii
Action
Uber slick blend of the immense Gundam universe (and seemingly all its inhabitants) and lush production values as a thousand speed lines and jagged fringed avatars are spliced with intense battle pyrotechnics burning a hole in the TV screen. A superb culmination of the series and a fine title in its own rights, not just for fans.
Nintendo DS
Rhythm
Bottom Biting Insect might be a good translation of the title, but we are not too sure what the spam detectors will make of it. The NHK phenomena was so big that the song guested on the New Years celebration programme in Japan. Not a good tune to get stuck in your head, but theres great musical variance here as players tap away in very colourful environs to witness the successful bottom bite at the end providing the stages are cleared. Very enjoyable and great for a quick tap rather than an epic adventure.
PS2
Platform
Absolutely lush backgrounds feel like they are bringing a fairytale to life in this spiritual sequel to the much vaunted Princess Crown on the Saturn. Items and experience are important as magical spells are released with a fair heap of graphical gunpowder. But at its core its good old fashioned 2D platform fighting and this cat is lapping it up. Absolutely huge quest with some nightmare inspired bosses.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Plethora of zany characters from the anime hero Dam Dam to a fish head on legs which have to jump on each others shadows to win the bout. A glimpse of the creativity Sony harnesses when its developers are given a free reign.
Playstation
Simulation
Enjoy an anime sports day with swimming, cycling, running events all presented in a high school setting with lead role going to Akari chan. The game takes place over the whole school term with plenty of distractions to keep players interested.
Miscellaneous Games
A Bit Special
A Konami art style title that lets budding Rolph Harris add features to faces and various outfits to create monster high school girls or samurai themed gangsters. All good clean fun on a little known platform and Konami release.
Playstation
RPG
With art from the Samurai Spirits and Asuka illustrator Eithea is certainly a looker. But the voice acting and accompaniments to cut scenes have had plenty put into them. The story takes a young school boy and transforms him into a new universe after an earthquake. For our hero conversing well with the girls who befriend him actually helps his ability to battle, as does choosing a good formation.
Sega Saturn
Stimulation
Anime style, telephone dating adventure worthy of the yellow label warning. Sega seems far less willing to censor its games than Sony, hence an abundance of this kind of title on the Saturn. Genki has been desperately trying to impress lady in red Karen, but alas…
Dreamcast
RPG
Released with the console itself, spooky adventure based in London in a similar mould to “D”. A collectors item as one of the first Dreamcast releases.
PS2
Sports
Includes the latest data from the J League along with updated South American and European teams. An enjoyable feature is the career mode that allows players to pick a footballer and follow their progress all the way to glory in the European Cup or a tough life in the Conference getting clattered every challenge.
PSP
One on One Beat Em Up
The animes distinct and sometimes creepy look with lurchingly tall characters has carried over effortlessly and the whole production oozes the sort of vintage claret class youd expect from the series. Two player tag battles are a joy with what look like extras from Spirited Away but the lightening gameplay gives little opportunity to admire the scenery.
PS2
Rhythm
Refreshingly original title playing most like a rhythm action titles except this time players take the role of a conductor about the town. As in a rhythm action title such as Samba De Amigo, the backgrounds shift according to players performance so the conductor soon knows if they are hitting the right notes. Rather than simple button presses though, the degree of pressure applied is the important factor in keeping the orchestra together. Bravo indeed. Known as Mad Maestro in the West.
Nintendo DS
Rhythm
Update of the GBA original which became a big hit. The use of the stylus adds an extra dimension to the refreshing concept. Combines the refreshing delights of the Made in Wario series with funky, fly beats therefore taking the gameplay on to a higher plane by combining demands on visual and aural reflexes. With such delightful gameplay its hard to put down but unless you got rhythm you wont see the credits roll.
PS3
Sports
With an additional course, around twenty new models of cars and up to 16 cars in online races, rev heads will be in a spin of the sheer gloss of GT5 Spec III finish. Even for a series renowned for its good looks, GT5 looks like attaining a new plateau of race game enjoyment with all the beauty of a race girl and the gritty realism of a pit lane skid out. Sony shows its gunning for pole position taking full advantage of modern technology in both the visual and audio lanes. Its no revolution, just real progress.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Homestay game played out as Ryoko san involving dating and cooking. Originally a PC Engine title.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Enjoy the hot summer holiday together with Ryoko san in this popular love simulation series from Japan.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
A collectors item for fans of VF: watch Jeff in different situations – including diving and whaling! Owners of five or more of the series were rewarded with a special Dual disk.
Super Famicom
Sports
Live the F1 dream in this popular Super Famicom split screen racer with appropriately noisy engine effects. An early release and much coverted by the early adopters of the SFC at the time.
