Playstation
Simulation
Beautiful fan book with plenty of screen shots to discuss the Playstation drama game. Every decision seems to have an influence over the very enjoyable story.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Platform
Clever side scrolling platform action where players must use their cunning in order to add to the screens in extra platforms, moving ramps and dissolving blocks to help the builderman get across the screen. Enjoyable and not too taxing, but still gives plenty of satisfaction when a plan comes together.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Simulation
Create your very our princess or spoilt brat with this sequel and conversion to the incredibly popular PC game.
Sega Saturn
One on One Beat Em Up
The first release from the Fatal Fury series to make it across to the Saturn and this heavyweight weighs in without a ram cart meaning a few frames of animation get lost in the conversion process from the whopping Neo Geo big brother. Still an admirable effort though as SNK come out from their corner fists flailing.
Sega Saturn
Shoot Em Up
Vertically scrolling shmup with smashing characterisation to spice up the on screen onslaught. Twelve colourful characters in all to choose from in this very special package.
Sega Saturn
Shoot Em Up
Arcade classics 1942, 1943 and 1943 Kai on the one CD which is great to see as, aside from the 1941 Super Grafx conversion, until this release the home versions had been a tad disappointing. Thankfully Capcom’s back catalogue is well worth cashing in on.
Nintendo DS
Action
Hal Laboratory pulls out all the stops once again as Kirby bounds around the screen to be controlled by the players deft use of the stylus in drawing a small line to shift their direction. The end game is to get to the magic mirror or door and their players enjoy a wee bonus stage. Similar to Famicom Mario having to jump as high as possible on the flagpole, the player gets Kirby to launch along the ramp to launch them as far as possible. Beautiful backgrounds and full of Kirbys stylish colouring.
Nintendo DS
RPG
Link continues with his revamped, Eastern European look, but thankfully gameplay remains true to the series deep roots and its a real joy to savour its sweet embrace.
NEO GEO CD
Shoot Em Up
Vertically scrolling World War fighter planes feature in this smooth shooter port with little in the way of loading times. Includes a two player mode for a bit of wing side back up against the bad B52’s and squadrons that dart at the pilot’s plane in various formations. But ground based vehicles are just as lethal – best to take them out first to leave just a smouldering crater. Makes good use of the theme with nice presentation and a decent length for a Neo Geo title.
PC Engine HU Card
Shooter
Nicely done conversion of the arcade smash, unfortunately missing the Uzi controller. Uses a cross hair marker instead of light gun in a similar vein to the Neo Geo classic Nam 75. The gun toting hero is hard as nails.
Sega Saturn
RPG
Frees the flying up to enjoy off the rails shooting. Skillfully blends action and RPG elements with a pinch of strategy in a true classic for the Saturn which pushes the hardware to perform some stunning landscapes proving the adage it takes time to get to grips with the hardware. Infinitely more affordable than the scarce Western version, but unfortunately not in English. A piece of programming genius of epic proportions baked to perfection.
Mega Drive
Puzzle
Puyo Puyo is Japanese onomatopoeia for something soft to touch, such as the jelly like balls that fall from the sky to be aligned with similar colours in this saccharine soaked, kawaii puzzler.
GameBoy Original
Puzzle
Viruses must be wiped out by aligning them with the correctly colour coded vitamin pill. Simple premise but it soon generates sweaty palm syndrome and prickly heat that even the good Doctor Mario would have trouble curing.
GameBoy Original
Platform
Nintendo treats gamers to plenty of special moments within this well composed platformer with solid sprites squeezing every squashed banana of performance out of this little monkey magic machine. The movement of Diddy works well to give variety to a well represented genre.
PS3
Action
Snake is starting to develop that thousand yard stare that a veteran of so many conflicts is in danger of. Yet the gameplay is invigorating and far from jaded as it once again ups both the gameplay and visual ante with seeming ease. Granted the action ante has also been upped and some will bemoan the lack of stealth. May will have little chance to notice amongst the strafe and shrapnel.
PS3
Action
Konami utilises its experience of all out action titles to good effect combining it like an expert chef with gothic decay and organic backgrounds as players face colossus proportioned bosses (without wishing to give too much away) alongside what looks like an extra from Colossus besides swinging across cliffs. Hats off.
Famicom Cart
Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
Sequel to the father of Final Fight and Streets of Rage with cracking soundtrack. Has a very eighties glam feel to it bringing back those special memories of the arcade classic where you could wrap an iron bar around your partner’s head. Accidently on purpose of course.
PC Engine CD ROM
Platform
Stunning anime cut scenes mixed up with frantic platform action. A must for game headed anime fans.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Platform
The highlight of the series with some very tidy platforming action which gives fans plenty of secret info on the heroine Yuko. Subtitled The Legend of a Fantasm Soldier.
PC Engine CD ROM
Platform
Amazing anime cut scenes with a femme fatale cast mixed up with furious platform action.
Famicom Cart
Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
Reminiscent of Master Karateka’s rotoscoped sprites, Ken journeys through a post-apocalyptic world dishing out a few well-timed sweeps and high-kicks like Kung-Fu Master. Boss patterns have to be quickly memorised or the fear is the end of level bad guys will be using the phrase on Kenshiro himself.
