Gamecube
Action
A highly collectable GameCube title that combines Virtua On with the action of Power Stone and throws in a spot of Danball Senki. Players have their own robot persona and the colour and speed of gameplay, blending the boundaries of anime and gaming, make it easy to see why it has such a popular status. Sometimes known as Gatcha Force.
Mega CD
Simulation
Conversion of the PC Engine version which never quite saw the light of day, sees you playing as a young girl skilled in magic on an RPG style quest. The three quarters overhead perspective exploration scenes are blended with some luscious animated cut and dialogue scenes. Quite a rare find nowadays.
Mega Drive
Puzzle
Unusual action puzzle title where players must use robotic arms to grab balls from your opponent that cascade down the screen. Frantic at times especially as the count down reaches zero.
Playstation
Rhythm
Konami off-shoot of the Beatmania and DDR series that allows dancers to put in their own CD and cleverly generates the beats and steps from the new CD. An array of intriguing on screen personas from skeletons to cherubs keep players entertained with their rhythmic gyrations.
Wii
Shooter
Exquisite lighting effects, a rising soundtrack, a dank, moody atmosphere that feels straight from the creative genius of Ridley Scott, fluid, intuitive controls and gameplay worthy of the weighty license which respects the heritage whilst pushing the boundaries of the modern FPS.
Mega Drive
Action
Full of arcade action in the Ikari Warriors mould, Gain Ground has a good half century of well varied levels taking you through the ages keeping it visually fresh. Plays like a dream in two player with the goal being either to take everyone out in the time constrained levels or to get to the exit. Rescuing a hostage adds another member to your merry band to choose from with often an ace arsenal that goes with them. A real unheralded treat for Sega action fans.
PC Engine FX
Simulation
Reminiscent of Takahashi sans Urusei Yatsura as a teenage high school student must deal with being linked to a higher power in the appearances of Megami and her sometimes mischievous accomplices. Also known as Ah Megami Sama.
Gamecube
Sports
The solid Virtua Striker engine refined with added management options. Where as the passing system isn’t perfect, this arcade classic still can set the heart a flutter with some very special goals. The first to introduce a very clever crossing system and the potential for wing wizardry.
Gamecube
Action
More monkey mayhem as players take a spin inside the Monkey Balls and roll through the levels collecting bananas. A feel for momentum must be attained to avoid dropping off levels, but the ball physics are well designed making it always, alas, the players fault for taking a tumble or making a simian slip. Full of Sega’s colourful charm.
Dreamcast
Sports
Slickly animated and with plenty of razzmatazz to blend the borders between the sport and its gaming equivalent with wrestlers instantly recognisable. The series reaches a crescendo bigger than Big Daddy jumping off the ropes in this pinnacle of Dreamcast wrestling.
Dreamcast
Simulation
Meet the ladies of Pocket Kano and get to comment on their apartments and the like. But its best to avoid tongue in cheek comments which may fall flat. As tempting as it may be.
Mega CD
Simulation
A thoroughly crazed mahjong sequel full of mad characters with a guest appearance of that well known mahjong master ET! ‘ET reach!’ Subtitled Struggle in the Tokyo Mahjongland and also known as Selfish Gambler.
Mega CD
Simulation
A Wolf Team collectable which sees you governing over the population and kingdom to hopefully bring prosperity. Related to the massive Romance in the Three Kingdoms Koei series.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Giant mechs wrestling for supremacy in this finely tuned sequel. Carefully select your team depending on the task ahead to dominate earth and space.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Design a fun park for the monkey to enjoy with race track, rollerball track, swimming pool and the like for entertainment for our simian friend.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Panic Chan and Trouble Chan star in this OVA anime adventure packed full with plenty of doe eyed characters and more high jinx than Maison Ikkoku with a cheeky nod to Star Trek.
Playstation
Rhythm
Far better to practise in the comfort of your own home before unleashing your moves on the arcade groupies. Genki keeps the curtains firmly shut when grooving and gyrating, for now…
Mega CD
Shooter
This on the rails helicopter shooter was an early Mega CD release from an era when FMV was the requisite of a CD format release. Still expertly executed and a pleasurable blast with the copter requiring some limited control too.
PS2
RPG
This instalment goes some way towards explaining the obsession with all things Dragons Quest in Japan: the bird song, the sound of grass being trampled as the cel shaded player explores new environs, the imaginative characters, the build up of tension before a troop of Slimes attack. Fans of the series will feel right at home with this slickly executed production.
Super Famicom
Puzzle
A real retro romp with players basically matching lines of Hudson inspired characters faces such as the Aladdin inspired heads or the ghosts. Strangely compelling with the main gimmick being the base cart remains the same whilst the smaller cart fitting into the slot can be interchanged. The title is a pun on the characters for shark (same) and turtle (game.)
NEO GEO CD
One on One Beat Em Up
Darker third installment from the Garapagos team with many new characters and more damaging specials. Loved by some, others resented the increased damage level decreasing bout time. Still slicing an opponent brings a worrying degree of satisfaction.
