Miscellaneous Games
Simulation
Conan, star of the Case Closed anime, gets cut loose on the Bandai Super Note Club with this adventure for the little known curio format. Choosing different options in game affects the outcome of the story. The cart also includes mini games of the Skateboard Chase, 3D Maze and Kick Out.
Super Famicom
Platform
A great twist on the platform theme as the football mad soccer kid runs from platform to platform with his football never too far from his possession. The ball can be used to jump on to reach higher levels, or volleyed into adversaries to take the wind out of their sails. Bright, breezy platforming fun.
Super Famicom
RPG
A lesser known masterpiece from the Big N that sadly never made it to the West. Based on a mythical treasure chest known as Marvellous, the player takes on the challenge of locating it with a team of young lads. Each has their own merit such as being nippy and able to squeeze through gaps, or being strong and able to lift large boulders or tall and able to reach high spots. Unfortunately a band of rogue pirates are also in pursuit of the treasure too. Brilliantly carried out with that Nintendo child like charming view of the world. Before long you’ll be drawn in and think nothing of chatting to chimps in underground caves…
Super Famicom
Platform
Subtitled ‘Takahashi Meijin’. Old school platforming in all its springs, strawberry and skateboarding cliched brilliance.
Super Famicom
Sports
The cartoon style approach of the Fire series allows the developers Human to add just that: the human touch. As such the fun and comical animation of taking one where the sun don’t shine is amply represented and captures what more serious wrestle titles skip.
Playstation
RPG
The innocence of the sprite graphics pulls on the heart strings during the masterfully crafted story’s execution. Known as Final Fantasy II in the West as parts two and three hadn’t received an English language translation. The American version was censored for some reason.
Gamecube
Quiz
A quiz game including Bingo and Roulette that is great for gamers looking to boost their Japanese ability and kanji count, alongside a good bit of general knowledge. With questions as varied as from Cambodian temples to chemicals of the brain, the mic fitted with button adds to the authenticity. I will have a B please Bob.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Draws on the Gundam world excellently to produce a full on 2D fighter worthy of the license. With obligatory story and versus modes comes a time attack challenge and survival mode. Reminiscent in parts of Capcom’s finer works, their isn’t much more of a complement we can pay.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Well crafted kick around with four player mode a scream, although as such unlikely to be contributing much to the Respect campaign. Utilises J-League teams and the game engine has a good balance of arcade feel with varied goal scoring.
Super Famicom
Action
Fine use of the SFC’s palette and some n ice extras such as being able to ride kangaroos in order to zip around planting tactical bombs a little bit quicker. The tweaks never dominate a fine game that never needed fixing and add to the fun factor.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Gate ball is the sport of croquet more or less and with some fine, Japanese style theming, players must not only whack the ball through the gate, but also think about the dangle of the angle for their next shot. Works well on the Engine.
Super Famicom
RPG
Kenshiro et al are well suited to the three quarter perspective view RPG world as they are such an intriguing bunch of bad dudes. Hot in pursuit of abducted fair lady, but best not to be too keen as a boulder tumbles down to hinder your mission. Battles take on the side of fight perspective as various martial commands are executed with expert panache.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Pac Man is the height of retro chic. Plenty of ghosts to avoid and water pumps to jump on in this brightly coloured classic. (What is it with platform games and water pumps?!) The name Pac comes from the Japanese onomatopoeia from the sound of munching away, as our little friend tends to do.
Famicom Disk System
Sports
Solid overhead kick around with Konamis fine flair for presentation and good arcade mechanics to ensure the ball hits the back on the net with frequent regularity. Definite promotion contender.
Famicom Cart
Sports
Nintendo’s Famicom success was backed up by many superb Nintendo produced titles, besides the likes of Mario and Zelda. This formula one racer ticks all the boxes and has incredible attention to detail and presentation, as you would expect from a triple A title.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Nintendo goes for an early Disney look approach to realising Mickey and Minnie in this good, clean platform adventure. Clever touches and plenty of colour to put a spring back in your gaming step.
Famicom Cart
Platform
Even without everyones’ favourite blue rinse, earless cat, this platformer would stand up well to the competition with graphics approaching Super Famicom standard. The gameplay scrubs up very well to: plenty of platform exploration and taking to the skies using the bamboo helicopter to shoot vertically and horizontally. Grabbing the odd key and plenty of interesting characters on the road.
PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Reminiscent of ‘Big Run’ on the Super Famicom in that both were the first driving games released for their respective systems and both cover the Paris – Dakkar Rally. Complete with Eiffel Tower sprite of course!
Mega Drive
Sports
Utilising its smooth flowing NBA engine, EA created a truly dream title with the incredible talents of Jordan, Johnson, Bird, Berkley et al that made up the 92 USA Olympic team. Its possible to select the best of the rest of the world team, but even with the cream of every other nation its tough to match their talents.
PS2
Action
Beautiful combination of the skills of the anime artists to draw cel shaded sprites with dynamic effects and intriguing locales to really bring the animated series to life. The tag option works well and adds much depth and fun to the frolics.
PS2
Action
Based on the story of ordinary farmers rebelling against their unjust samurai leaders with plenty of slicing and dicing in this historical epic.
