Nintendo 64
RPG
Import only exclusive title in which you battle robots but can also customise the main body, legs, gun, bomb and special weapon to last longer. Easy to see why this game was so popular in Japan sparking a sequel with some light RPG elements to distract from the heavy metal fights.

Turtles on platform this time avoiding blokes with chain saws – usually a good policy in Genki’s humble experience. Makes good use of the turtles nature and taking to underwater sections. April’s always on hand to offer support.
PSP
Shoot Em Up
Konami declares its unrelenting love for gamers from the old school with this bumper compilation responsible for many a blistered thumb. Includes five games on the wee UMD are the organic looking Salamander parts one and two, plus Life Force, Xexex and Gradius II. Konami have enabled the games to fully utilise the PSP’s screen, but they can also be played in their original dimensions for the PSP purists. Also includes a gallery to savour memories of old. The appropriately daunting front cover remains with the Salamander boss – a classic retro image. Yet its Xexex that is the surprise package here with its R Type style detachable pod making for exhilarating gameplay. Sometimes its best not to go back, but this time its good to be back. And Xexex absolutely insists you go back.

Sports
Old Kunio kun couldn’t just have an athletics meet, oh no. The impressive 3D swimming level sees players able to switch lanes and assault mid stroke and hurdles get chucked across to fellow athletes too. The long jump and pole vault are particularly punishing being held between sky-scrapers. At least the Judoka behave as they should. Known in Japan as Bikkuri Nekketsu Shin Kiroku Harukanaru Kin Medal.

Platform
Two on two battle action with a variety of locales including the obligatory electric fence. Kunio kun comes to the fore and proves he can still pull a mighty punch. Known in Japanese as Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu.

Action
A Jidaigeki is a historical drama as Kunio takes a trip back in time to enjoy some of Japan’s rich feudal history with samurai and chonmage hairstyles. Our Kunio fits the bill just fine though: equally at home fighting bad dudes down the game centre as unhinged bullies trying to capture his girl.

Genki has a penchant for ninjas and has no issues with kunoichi (or female ninjas) either. So its great to lap up the quick paced action in this fine example of a femme fatale action platformer. Full of Eastern mysticism and great gameplay to boot.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
A highly collectable Saturn title that is more like a digital magazine with horoscopes, guides to popular spots such as restaurants, a cosplay market with digitised photos, fashions from the streets etc.
Super Famicom
Simulation
Based on the massive anime series, this rare fighter takes on a first person perspective a la Super Spy. Excellent use of the license taking the intriguing characters of Yu Yu’s spooky world and almost bringing them to life.
Super Famicom
Simulation
Racing sim in which players must soup up their dream machine in order to take the chequered flag in midnight race meets. Races involve straight tracks and shifting through the gears quicker than opponents. Plenty of time to chat to the race girls too. Also called Zero Yon Champ.
Super Famicom
Simulation
Fluffy toys might look good for the rear view mirror, but its hard cash needed to progress in the brutal midnight races. Also called Zero Yon Champ.
Super Famicom
Platform
Pac Man is nicely rendered in 3D form as he romps around the levels collecting Pac pills. His versatility comes to the fore as he swings around levels and swims to the depths to get that hidden pill.
Super Famicom
RPG
Mecha based RPG makes a refreshing graphical revamp from the more traditional staple. Turn based combat against some mean machines with fine effects for the attacks on opponents.
PC Engine CD ROM

Arcade mahjong game converted to the home system with mild RPG exploration elements and more bunny ears than the Playboy mansion.

Genki Gurus will know it only takes a few Japanese ghosts, a wise sage and a few ninjas and Genki is sold on the concept. Where Ja Ja excels is utilising a smaller player character to allow so much going on on screen. A superb conversion and a tip top example of the genre. Oh, did we mention riding on giant frogs?
PC Engine CD ROM
Simulation
London’s most iconic detective sets the scene beautifully with the CD taking advantage of plenty of audio information. Plenty of trips around the town and back to Baker Street before going in front of the judge. Also features video scenes depending on game choices.

Blobby accompanies your quest to free the bonnie princess and his abilities to transform into a key or a trampoline cannot be undervalued in a platform game. Some clever conundrums and tight fixes to negotiate. Also known as Fushigina Blobby.
PC Engine CD ROM
RPG
From the department elevator music via the sound effects that remind of a train arriving in a Japanese station to the voice acting in the action scenes, this RPG exudes retro charm. The combat is action based and the game has a comforting feel to its master plan. Subtitled The Emblem from Darkness.
PS2
RPG
An update of Kingdom Hearts II with extra battles, maps and events re-released in Japan for the English voice actors it features along with Japanese subtitles. Comes as a two disk set with the second disk featuring a remake of the GBA title Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories with again a few unexpected extras over the original in the cut scenes and voice acting. A smashing series that shows that big budget collaborations can bare succulently sweet fruit when in the right hands.
Dreamcast
A Bit Special
A tribute to Tokyo’s brightest district that lights up to the God of neon and is full of devotees to all things PVC and video game related. This title used the sadly defunct Dreamcast net to allow players customized characters to battle it out about all things a good otaku should know. Clever use of the systems VMU too. Full title Akihabara Dennou Kumi Peta Pies!
PC Engine HU Card
Puzzle
Move parts of pipe around the screen to ensure the safe passage of the ball. Like all great puzzlers, really simple to play; yet gameplay soon becomes devishly fiendish causing very sweaty palms!
