PS2
Action
Capcom’s polish is more than evident as this epic samurai slasher captures gamers hearts and minds. Beautifully set in a Feudal Japan with plenty of adversaries straight from Japanese mythology. Thankfully the slash of steel can bring down even the biggest and baddest of boss monoliths.
Super Famicom
Platform
The Super Famicom has more platformers than commuters on the Yamanote Line first thing but this true classic platformer stands head and shoulders above the rest like an NBA player on the same train. Xandra is on a mission through the mystical land of Valkyrie to get medicine for his sick son. The main character looks like a green jelly baby but some of the gameplay is so ingenious and fresh, even after so many platform releases on the SFC. Tragically overlooked in the West. Xandra carries a tiger fork with which to attack enemies, but remains vulnerable if it gets stuck in the ground causing frantic panic to unwedge it. The star level is particularly remarkable as the platforms appear and disappear from view in a Tanabata inspired journey through the stars. This is the pure essence of gameplay that endeared fans to the format and many still wander the gaming scene in search of a return to such heady days. Bravo Namcot.
Super Famicom
Platform
Cracking Irem platform fun in their tie honoured tradition that sees our hero utilise his punk mohican hairstyle well in detaching it to use like a shuriken when the appropriate spray power up has been located. Bounding between cars as bald headed bad guys fire off volleys on machine guns in this pure, platform frolic.
Super Famicom
Platform
Old and new clash as the honourable samurai travels into the future on a mission of vengeance allowing the developers to use the best of both worlds. In an interesting twist to the platform hack ’em up the samurai lead character loses his sword after taking a certain amount of damage. Full health is then restored, but the attack meter completely depleted and its only through defeating sufficient enemies with bare hands that it can be restored and the sword returned. Its also possible to summon various spiritual powers to help on your quest in another distinguishing feature.
Super Famicom
Shoot Em Up
Few can forget the into the screen appeal of Axelay that has lost little of its lustre as the lava boss vents his wrath. Nor the ED209 robot boss capturing the 90s appeal of Robocop. But below the clever programming is a very solid shooter with as much polish on the gameplay as the graphical pizzazz.
Super Famicom
Action
Well worthy of its Famitsu award for excellence performing what seemed only possible on a high end PC at the time and bringing the first person shooter to the Super Famicom. A critical title in the development of the genre in the pre-Doom era, its Wolfenstein’s speed and wartime atmosphere that brought the game such high praise. Just as playable today.
Super Famicom
Platform
Capcom excels in these Disney backed licenses producing killer app visuals to back up its ever dependable gameplay. No doubt the results would please the Disney big wigs with such extravagant attention to detail and colourful, rich sprites utilising the circus theme to the hilt. Gameplay is kept fresh by collecting uniforms that change the players abilities – be it tossing enemies around screen, climbing walls or a hoover to vacuum up coins. Subtitled ‘The Great Circus Mystery.’
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Nobunaga was an iron fisted shogun known by the famous haiku ‘If the bird doesn’t sing, kill it!’ This is a strategy war based game involving seizing control of ancient Japan.
Sega Saturn
RPG
An investigative RPG sees you as Inspector Minton scrounging for clues as to why the murder took place.
Sega Saturn
Quiz
A good test of reading skills for budding kanji students, this quiz game is introduced by a youthful Colonel Sanders lookalike. Answering is multiple choice.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
A collector curio multimedia disk based on the mad Japanese cooking show in which the Iron Chef takes on all comers in a challenge to produce the finest dish based on bizarre ingredients. Puts our Ainsley to shame… Also know by its Japanese name: Ryouri no Tetsujin Kitchen Stadium Tour.
Super Famicom
Simulation
A nice Mario collectable with picture related puzzles and animated pictures all created with the ease of a Nintendo user friendly interface. The naughty Wario pops up adding a bit of mischief to the arty mix.
PS2
Rhythm
Gyrate to the beat with the sexy Space Channel reporter Ulala. Just don’t ask about the story! Unique feel to graphics, full of futuristic frolics.
GameBoy Advance
Sports
Compilation of two Kunio Kun games: dodgeball and basketball. Dodgeball is similar to ‘kingy’ in the UK: throw a ball at your opponents. Hit them and they take damage until turning into an angel and floating up to heaven. Unfortunately each team has a big bruiser far from being an angel, complete with powerful super move. Kunio and his motley crew add a great deal of fun to an otherwise limited genre. Starting under the gaze of Mount Fuji and the cherry blossom, a victory brings a trip to Naxat International for a flight (on Naxat Airlines) to London complete with Beatles style chip music. Next: a trip to Iceland complete with penguins. The basketball is set at a US Military base and being able to kick and punch somewhat changes the flow of the games a crucial times. And with multiple baskets, being able to score in your own net and teams with teleport powers, theres never a dull moment. Feels like a title made by gamers for gamers though.
Mega Drive
Simulation
Players build up their civilisation encouraging them to construct dwellings and mine resources, before raising an army to battle other countries. Known as Tyrants in the US.
Mega Drive
A Bit Special
Twenty party games all of a rather bizarre nature in this sequel to Tanto R. The mini games involve jumping over frogs, spotting the differences, catching rice balls as they fall on a kebab stick even a recall test where the silhouette of the young wife appeared last in the apartment window… A popular Sega title in Japan.
Mega Drive
Puzzle
Puyo Puyo is Japanese onomatopoeia for something soft to touch, such as the jelly like balls that fall from the sky to be aligned with similar colours in this saccharine soaked, kawaii puzzler.
Mega Drive
Action
A fun action game in which our funky rappers Toe Jam and Earl scour the three quarter perspective isometric landscape in search of their missing space ship parts. Thankfully the street feel of the game is well crafted – without a politicians in baseball cap feel to it. And the appeal of the main protagonists adds greatly to the enjoyableness of the clever gameplay. A real cracker complete with hip hop soundtrack.
PC Engine HU Card
Action
Any title combining ninja’s, kunoichi (female ninja’s), shadowmen, snipers and fire ninja’s can’t be bad. Ninja Warriors is a fine conversion of Taito’s late eighties coin-op smash with the only feature lacking being the Darius style three sectioned screen.
