Dreamcast
Simulation
Plenty of opportunities to practise conversational Japanese by choosing the right riposte in this simulation game which has a dark undertone to the proceedings.
Dreamcast
Simulation
Careful choice of language is required or there won’t just be fireworks at the summer festival…
Playstation
Rhythm
Classical music conductor simulation that pretty much has the market to itself. But the baton controller makes for a fun, if slightly pompous night in front of the TV. Getting the right tempo as well as volume from the orchestra is strangely compelling and an enjoyable, original experience further developed (albeit without the classy baton controller) in Mad Maestro (aka Lets Bravo Music) also on the Playstation 2.
Dreamcast
RPG
Gorgeous Sega online RPG when the company poured its heart and soul into its dream machine. Superb, intuitive combat engine with slick presentation, stunning cut-scenes and emotional avatars.
Super Famicom
Sports
Huge wrestlers grapple it out in the proportion almost to match the sizeable sprites of Fire Suplex. However the action is more a cross between wrestler and a one on one fighter adding the requisite joypad dexterity to the mull. Good presentation and plenty of avatars of the players winding each other up adds to the fun.
Dreamcast
Action
Utilising the weighty license, as heavy as the mecha suits that do battle themselves, to great effect with Battle of the Planets style retro anime giving players updates and cranking up the tension further. The action is intense and the controls make for an epic battle.
Dreamcast
Rhythm
Funky DC exclusive dance title as players shake it on down to the on screen prompts. The beats that must be hit are well synced to the music making for a smooth sequence – especially when sampled through the DDR controller. Well over fifty tracks for dancers to improve their two left feet.
Mega Drive
One on One Beat Em Up
Quality Konami licensed title that sees our fine turtle clan taking on all comers with the three buttons: kick, punch and taunt. There are also special moves that can only be executed when the player is on their last legs to try and even up the bout. Arcade feel to the gameplay which is very pick up and play, but the producers class shines through.
Mega Drive
Sports
Vintage digitised graphics combined with uber speedy gameplay and a generous helping of popcorny, all American razzmatazz. Players are very recognisable and there are plenty in there from the real UK NBA boom time. The graphical flame effects and the like add much to the high five good time feel of a very fine sports representation.
Mega Drive
Sports
This overhead perspective racing game tests your reflexes to the max. Rev heads will relish this MD updates fast paced gameplay.
Dreamcast
Board Game
Board game that cuts to mini games where players must match up the clothing in a bizarre twist of bingo or watch spinning, Dreamcast logo like swirls in a bid to stay awake against rival players. All very much an appropriate tribute to the bizarre anime series.
Mega Drive
Sports
Plays a tough game of American Football that makes for a good representative of the sport. The best praise we can heap on it is it gets non-fans on board to the point of comparing which plays to go for.
Mega Drive
Puzzle
Unusual action puzzle title where players must use robotic arms to grab balls from your opponent that cascade down the screen. Frantic at times especially as the count down reaches zero.
Wonderswan
Puzzle
Match up spheres as your character runs frantically around the bottom of the screen firing the balls up. Being in possession of a special move often helps keep on top of things. But you are always only a few misplaced balls away from failure. Highly compelling.
Wonderswan
Simulation
Utilising the weighty Gundam license with a battle simulation engine as the giant mech dismantle rival enemy vessels.
Super Famicom
A Bit Special
Contains three arcade classics on the one cart: Moon Cresta, Crazy Climber and Frisky Tom. So we have a pre-Galga shooter with the steady hand eye co-ordination required for the docking levels, a climbing game where opening windows, flying plant pots and bird droppings conspire to hinder your progress to the top of the building and finally a puzzler where the water pipe must be repaired to help the fair lady get her shower. Quite a mixed bunch then.
Super Famicom
Sports
The World Cup Edition as Formation does its take on Diana Ross’ missed goal and the all American razzmatazz of the USA 94 World Cup. Updated to include all the correct stats for the ground collecting anoraks.
Super Famicom
RPG
The friendly village folk are well represented in the detailed houses of the town. Its a shame they don’t offer more weaponry for free seeing as it is your good self that has to enter the dark dungeon and plough through the creatures and critters that stand in your way. Still free enterprise does bring a good range of merchandise to squander your hard earned currency on.
Dreamcast
RPG
The second and final release of PSO on the Dreamcast improved and toughened up the AI of its various inhabitants as well as giving the textures a lick of paint, some mighty weaponry, improved NPC robots and new modes of play. Touched on online gaming nirvana for a while, but now that Pandora’s Box has been opened the Holy Grail quest for the ultimate online experience continues.
Dreamcast
A Bit Special
3D version of the popular anime series that allows players to sample to the fine J Pop, delve into mini games and get to know the characters and costumes. The game makes the most of its source material with players filming their own anime sequences. Also includes mini games such as the Columns style puzzler with it being possible to set off some serious combos.
Mega Drive
Sports
Making good use of the official J League license with easy to pick up and play arcade style mechanics. This style of football game is no longer made, but there is plenty to celebrate in the free flowing football style and quick pacing.
