Merchandise
Starring a special feature on Mario 64 and Mario Story with them due to be releases imminently at the time besides an in depth look at Zelda Majora’s Mask, interviews and 53 titles covered in all.
GameBoy Advance
Simulation
Plenty of speed lines and visual pyrotechnics to portray the mech on mech mayhem as the tension cranks up. The players avatars frequently appear too reminding us of the people in control of these massive hulks of steel. Lovely pastel look to the backgrounds and very cute SD representations to the mecha of the Gundam universe.
GameBoy Color
Action
A very respectable license game based on the world of Harry Potter as he explores the impressive 3D world building up experience and spells all building up to a run in with you know who. Great use of the GameBoy Colour’s palette and chip tunes.
GameBoy Original
Action
Makes ace use of the monochrome screen as players bound the platforms clearing away the Bero men baddies with a tactical comb or two in order to clear the level and progress. Much sort after due to being released in a collectable tin, as opposed to a card box.
PS3
Rhythm
Fans of the late, great Michael Jackson will rejoice in this tribute to him bringing you the chance to moonwalk across the living room like the man himself and keep neighbours on their toes with appropriate exclamations.
Virtual Boy
Puzzle
Join Bomberman’s quest to make the golden Bomberman statue his own by winning the three medals. All of the enemies and levels are of a spooky nature, but in a cuddly Bomberman style. Gameplay is in a similar vein to Columns.
Playstation
A Bit Special
The Kids Station controller simplifies the buttons from the control pad making for simple mini games, but plenty of fun. The lower age range makes this a great tool for those learning Japanese, especially at Genki’s level.
Playstation
Simulation
A high end Playstation project with incredibly detailed animation and dramatic voice acting to crank up the tension, not that it particularly needs it at time.
PS2
Action
Haunting Gothic adventure with a heavy emphasis on action and a delightfully spooky, old school feel to proceedings. Dripping with atmosphere and beautifully lit.
PS2
Action
All out sword slicing action with some sublime combos for the joypad dexterous. Sega have a superb heritage in sword play and action and this lesser-known, all-out action title deserves a second look. Just maybe not in the eye or risk a swishing blade in your direction.
PS2
Simulation
Showcasing all that is popular in these sim games: love interest, beautiful graphics and of course a few fights along the way. Considered actions are the order of the way as the interactions with other characters effect the overall endings in a form of gaming karma. A huge Sega title for the discerning otaku with a huge thank you from Sega in the form of this lovely limited edition.
Wonderswan
Simulation
A digital universe with some bizarre, some very cute digimons to interact with a power up your own collection as Bandai backs its swan song to the hilt.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
A well-established developer of love adventures which once again shows its hand is capable of beautifully drawn escapades.
Wonderswan
RPG
From the anime series comes this spin off adventure with original story and plenty of stunningly realised scenes.
Virtual Boy
Sports
Playable from behind the pugilists boxing gloves, you take on robot opponents in a slug fest. The 3D effect works well as the fists fly towards you.
Virtual Boy
Shooter
Plays like Star Fox done in vector graphics – all the levels and enemy ships to shoot at are made up of red lines, but it works well to give a fast flowing, fully 3D environment with the developers showing a fine eye for attention to detail. Various camera angles have been implemented to find the best one for enjoying the challenging levels and boss fights. Plenty of work has been put in on the controls too making them inherently intuitive with evasive rolls and tight turns. The player’s ship not only takes damage to the shields, but also runs low on fuel requiring pilots to posses a ruthless hit and fly streak to flourish. Mention must go to the atmospheric intro too.
Wonderswan
Sports
Kinikuman is an alien prince whose escapades are detailed in the Shonen Jump manga. This is a whacked out wrestling game could teach the WWF games a half nelson or two. Shrunk down sprite characters look good on the small screen with some great avatars to show the emotion behind the wrestling masks.
PS2
Sports
Wide, sweeping curves to savour as players put the pedal to the metal. Slick presentation as players swoop in from an aerial view to the finely tuned gaming engine. Plenty of visual treats too such as flags fluttering and balloons lazily drifting by.
PS2
One on One Beat Em Up
Capcom once again recreates the period splendour of a feudal Japan setting for the Onimusha series to delve into a Samurai Spirits style fighting melee. An element of the supernatural is provided by the spooky Nobunaga whose clan of undead warriors must be laid to rest before seeking revenge on the leader himself. Oozes atmosphere with blood red skies, enchanted forests and spine tingling sound effects. There are also plenty of extra items to go back for the completist. Also known as Onimusha Blade Warriors.
Super Famicom
One on One Beat Em Up
Data East rolls its sleeves up and shows its coin up credentials in this one on one martial arts contest with characters such as minotaur using his horns to devastating effect. Plenty of other characters from Greek and Roman mythology and a solid title for the fight enthusiast. Also known as Mutant Fighter.
NEO GEO CD
One on One Beat Em Up
The superlatively detailed backgrounds and imaginative combatant design that characterises any quality SNK release are present, as is the power up bar from the 97 version which allows for super moves when full which is preferred by many to the striker system introduced in the sequels from here on in. Just like the real world of martial arts, its takes dedication and hard work to progress with this old school black belt. Today’s crop of beat em ups would take a pasting off this bruiser.
