Mega Drive

Here we have all the games in the Mega Drive Section.
Mega Drive
RPG
The final slice of Shining Force on the 16 bit platform that left fans awaiting the 32 bit sequels with real anticipation. Graphically squeezes the Mega Drive for all its got and the results are pretty amazing. Its easy to see why many miss the innocence of the 16 bit sprite worlds looking at this. Imaginative, engrossing, enthralling, engaging: enjoy.
Mega Drive
Sports
The blue rinsed spikey one gets let loose in a pinball game with Sonic playing as the ball. As such there is room to manoeuvre around in the quest to grab the emeralds and as many bonus rings as possible. The bonus levels provide a fun distraction too – none more so than knocking out Robotniks teeth. An accomplished pinball game given added glitz and polish by the presence of the Sega hedgehog.
Mega Drive
Platform
Improves the visual look over the original with an artisan flair for detail such as the breeze blowing but overall the improvement is vast. The new spin attack adds an element to gameplay that would remain a key feature in future titles. Even the bonus stage has been brushed up with a clever bit of 3D wizardry. The replay value is increased by the challenge of scooping up all the emeralds – no mean feat.
Mega Drive
RPG
Old school RPG with plenty of combat potential to beef up the players posse of vagabonds to turn them into valiant warriors, especially with some well spent gold down the local armoury. Fans of the 16 Bit era RPG genre will lap this up.
Mega Drive
Action
Good bit of chopper action as the Mega Drive shifts a few polygons around with admirable aptitude. Straight forward missions make for unambiguous, action slanted gaming. A real classic of Western gaming also released on the Atari Lynx.
🏆Brilliant!
Brilliant Mega Drive
Action
The original cart is a rather rare side scrolling beat ’em up from Kemco with solid 2D visuals and gameplay that they don’t make quite like they used to. Each character has their own special move – the hand grenade can certainly have its use at times. Simultaneous two player mode adds to the enjoyment of this very playable romp.
Mega Drive
Platform
Excellent conversion by Sega of the fast action coin op legend without any cutbacks as with the Western versions, nor the scary box art. Flip from surface to air dicing opponents as you go. Captures the essence of the arcade perfectly.
Mega Drive
RPG
An RPG of fine fettle which takes a realistic approach in that the hero must get sufficient food and rest to stay alive. Items add to the weight lugged around and slow the progress down. And any overnight sortie out of the relative safety of the town requires sufficient planning to survive. The visuals are small so its possible to see a wide area of the gaming world at once. The soundtrack is sublime too to make up for any disappointment with the small-scale sprites. Plenty of heart in this one.
Mega Drive
Sports
Whilst not always obeying the laws of physics, Super Monaco 2 has some fine circuits to hone the drivers handling skills, even if its firmly arcade in its approach. Includes the Senna GP with tracks designed by the great driver himself alongside the World GP with its mighty challenge to make sure its you spraying the champagne, not down in the pits.
Mega Drive
Shooter
Launch title Thunder Blade brought the arcade home even down to the reverse cockpit controls in this accurate conversion that even had the thrill of take off announcing the new dawn of the 16Bit era. There were extras too for the Mega Drive with the addition of mid level bosses to beef up the challenge, switching from the 3D perspective to an overhead when the boss battle ensued.
Mega Drive
Sports
Classic Video System title from back in 1989 which stirs memories of Olympics past as players try to get their team, perhaps tactically wearing shorts a little too tight, to become the best in the world.
Mega Drive
RPG
Enjoyable RPG with well-drawn visuals and a pleasant soundtrack. Uses the first person perspective outlook well blended with standard third person perspective aswell to keep the visuals varied. The Mega Drive isn’t over burdened with RPG’s and Vermillion makes a welcome addition with imaginative bosses and dramatic battles.
Mega Drive
Sports
Not one of the most famous World Cups being held in 92, but this is actually based on the arcade revelation World Cup 90. As such it plays a zippy game with simple controls and quick turn-overs in possession. Keep it on the deck, lob it forward or shoot being the attacking controls with heading and overhead kicks possible for that moment of World Cup glory.
Mega Drive
Action
A fun action game in which our funky rappers Toe Jam and Earl scour the three quarter perspective isometric landscape in search of their missing space ship parts. Thankfully the street feel of the game is well crafted – without a politicians in baseball cap feel to it. And the appeal of the main protagonists adds greatly to the enjoyableness of the clever gameplay. A real cracker complete with hip hop soundtrack.
Mega Drive
Sports
From the publishers of crack shmup Eliminate Down comes this two-course wonder with Japanese and American rounds to sample. Up to four players can participate for the hole or keep a tally of the overall score in tournament mode. An accomplished title.
Mega Drive
Sports
Realistic golf game employing an impressive 3D engine to realisticly realise the Hawaiian course. The sun shifts too producing a warm glow of early evening on the back nine. A fine stroll in the park with good interface.
Mega Drive
Platform
Solid platform title set in a spooky forest where the lead man shoots fire from his fingers to scythe through to a cinder the evil ghouls and demons lying in wait. Strangely compelling in spite of the coin op based, money grabbing difficulty requiring pixel-perfect jumps.
Mega Drive
Platform
Forced scrolling platform action demands quick thinking at all times. Very cute, colourful and cartoony sprites and backgrounds add to the charm of this platform romp and the shooting sections provide a fun distraction.
Mega Drive
Platform
With colourful, cute and cuddly graphics Wonder Boy looks a real treat and plays like one too with light action RPG moments as you collect crucial items, top up at the local store and add to your heart count. Just watch out for grumpy mushrooms, friendly faries and bug eyed rabbits. Also Known as WonderBoy in Monster World.
Mega Drive
Shoot Em Up
Mega bosses and pretty level design make for a sizzling hot shooter that seems to be inspired by a few of its more illustrious counterparts. Still theres no shame here and the sum of the products add up to a fine trigger happy shmup. Stands for X-Dazedly Ray, in case you were wondering.
Mega Drive
Side Scrolling Beat Em Up
Xiaomei captures the spirit of Kung-Fu Master and takes players through the limestone cliffs of China, dispatching all and sundry with a well placed kick or inch punch to comically fall from the scrolling levels. Great to see the Mega Drive alive and kicking in 2023.
Mega Drive
Simulation
Unfortunately not the Treasure scrapper at a bargain price, but a Sega take on the Psychic Yu Yu universe. Whilst the two cant be compared, pound for pound this is still a quality production as Yu Yu goes on an adventure quest and encounters a few battles along the way. The rich characters come to life on the 16 bit machine.
Mega Drive
Simulation
Feudal Japan based war sim from the illustrious and infamous Wolf Team showing plenty of promise. Trying to unite the warring fractions of a sliced up country requires the strongest of armies and a legion of loyal samurai.
