Nintendo DS
Platform
Sequel to the seminal Super Famicom platformer with child like cartoony crayon squiggles and cheery colours making for a bright and breezy platformer. The key as before is to not lose Yoshis passenger for too long so the punishment of instant death is lessened encouraging exploration for the hidden coins and areas. The attributes of Yoshis passenger also come into play with Peach able to slow down falls Mary Poppins style with her brolly and Mario can rebound eggs off walls for tactical shots at seemingly unreachable targets. The double screen DS is put to good use – sometimes only the bottom screen can be used to see the enemy masked up top as in the clever clash with the ghost in the mirror.
Nintendo DS
Sports
Cast off a lakeside line and aim for a good spot on the map. The lure needs dragging along the water to tempt a passing bass into snaffling it up. Its there that the battle commences with the powerful bass to use technique and patience to land a battler. All without the whiff of groundbait and rollies.
Nintendo DS
A Bit Special
Namco does a heroic job of reinventing its yellow pill muncher making use of the DS to innovate and originate. Play begins by drafting a quick sketch of our little yellow friend who then trots off to the bottom screen. Pacman is then controlled by the stylus on the upper screen with appropriate flicks taking him where required. Skills honed in early stages are soon called on in full as the action heats up, such as being able to draw arrows or bombs. Boss encounters provide an opportunity to demonstrate a bit of lateral thinking adding much to the overall experience. As an extra there is a sketch book to enjoy seeing what happens when a few creative doodles are produced. Pure gameplay, highly original and exactly the kind of title Nintendo preached the DS stylus would deliver.
Nintendo DS
Puzzle
Also known as Fairy Musketeers, players get to tackle the puzzles with a definite slant on action rather than anything heavier. The frillier side of the game is also explored in the costume section where new outfits are adorned. Konamis style is certainly present in abundance as the presentation and pointy ear, maid and fantasy protagonists have had every effort made on them.
Nintendo DS
A Bit Special
The stunning solicitor series created by Capcom as players must go all out for the conviction. Credit to the Japanese game market which still pulls out its own genres every now and then. I mean few companies would be bold enough to test out such a title. Known in the West as Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney.
PS3
Action
Smoking cigarettes like Kojak pops in lollipops and looking like a Snatcher detective, but our hero walks a thin line between law and the yakuza. Mini games of button tapping karaoke, golf, bowling, darts, shoot em up, even oil massages from models are on offer to distract Shenmue style from the main quest. But lapping these up like a salaryman forgetting the daily grind will soon lead to a queue of street flotsam awaiting to make your acquaintance. An epic quest, Shenmue III if you like, for the strong nerved and willed.
Sega Saturn
Shooter
Cavernous underground tunnels and sprawling over land arenas to explore in this fine 3D shooter with exploratory elements. Picked up quite a following in the day.
PS2
Sports
Break neck speed race title with a suitable soundtrack with enough beats to generate a potential nosebleed. Plenty of famous sites in the backgrounds but its hard to savour them first time round. Instead its left for the replays to be able to check out your paintwork and the sights on offer. But its clinging to the tail lights that will have most gamers lapping this up.
Merchandise
DVD
DVD format games magazine from Japan with this particular volume being of interest to Nintendo Fans with a report on the big N show that is SpaceWorld 2000 including a first look at the GameCube and GameBoy Advance. Plenty of titles featured too including Silent Scope, Sydney 2000, Shiren 2 right through to the GameBoy Color.
Playstation
A Bit Special
The title translates as ‘I can do it on my own’ and has players making various dishes that even Genki fancies being able to rustle up. Based on the NHK programme, the Japanese equivalent of the BBC.
Super Famicom
Sports
Kashiwagi san is a suitable candidate to introduce this game and star as the prime strike fisherman. A real oyaji in terms of his appearance and actions, his presence adds much to this well made fishing title complete with plenty of lures to choose from.
Super Famicom
Sports
SD football at its finest with shrunken versions of Gundam and Kamen Rider nipping down the wing to use their super human powers to rise like a canary and ripple the onion net. Plenty of futuristic stadiums to choose from.
Sony Hardware
Accessory
Give your PSP a new lease of life with these very striking stickers applied to the handheld itself.

Sony Hardware
Accessory
Very snazzy cover for the PSP with a look of Gundam, but this series quickly growing to such mega proportions is based on plastic PVC robot models. Soft case with belt strap.
Super Famicom
Sports
Okamoto san pulls out a blinder in this officially licensed update and congratulations must go for being able to bridge the generations from Master System to Super Famicom in her releases. Realistic approach and plenty of Hawaiian sunshine.
Super Famicom
Sports
Japanese version of John Madden 93 and EA pull out all the locker room tricks to bring the sport home for the first time in great realism.
Super Famicom
Sports
Fine example of EA’s early potential in covering all bases with its American Football knowledge. Released in Japan under the Imagineer banner, but this is firmly Madden for the Super Famicom territory.
Nintendo Hardware
Accessory
A puffy cover to protect your DS Lite and keep it from harms way. Stylish blue colour that complements the system nicely.
Sony Hardware
Controller
A very unique controller with a somewhat limited capacity in being only compatible with the one title: Wai Wai Trump Taisen for the Playstation. Hori have still gone to town though to ensure it meets their high standards.
Super Famicom
Sports
The sequel has twelve teams for you to try and guide to glory. Hudson has had to remove the hu Stadium of the PC Engine edition, but there are plenty of extras to compensate. Classic match ups possible between the likes of the ‘Wholes’ and the ‘Buffers’. Two player mode.
