PC Engine HU Card
Sports
Third and final installment allows four player match ups and fighting both in and out of the ring. Watch out for Tommy Bomber’s Back Drop and Englishman Dynamic Billy’s Diving Head Butt!
PC Engine Arcade CD
One on One Beat Em Up
Conversion of the massive Neo Geo title from the 2D fighting grandmaster SNK. Some wonderful playable characters to choose from including the superbly named Korean Taekwondo expert KimKap Hwan and wide girthed Chinese gent Cheng Sinzan.
PC Engine CD ROM
RPG
A step back to feudal times and a golden gaming era when RPGs were a soothing combination of exploring the village to simple chip tunes before more sinister encounters with combat requiring experience points.
PC Engine HU Card
Platform
PC Kid is to the Engine what Sonic and Mario are to Sega and Nintendo. But Genki reckons he could have them both in a fight using his forehead to attack enemies as he does. Fun filled platform romp with original twists in an often cliched genre. Also known as ‘Genjin’ and ‘Bonk’.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Continues on similar lines to the Evangelion prequel as players get to savour some sublime footage from the series before choosing a course of action. This time the cut scenes are in full 3D capturing the intensity of the mecha anime.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
Be a winner at the game of life with this Saturn version of the popular board game that melds money, love and education in one title. Known in Japan as DX Jinsei Game.
Playstation
Puzzle
Don’t let the cute graphics deceive you – this is one mean Mr Driller. Drill down before your oxygen runs out. Easy to pick up, but prone to that just one more go mentality where minutes become hours. You have been warned.
Playstation
Action
Genki can’t resist the charms of a Chocobo: even our stony features raise a smile when seeing the legs of the bird like creature whizzing along in this Mario Kart style racer. Shortcuts are great, when remembered that is. Well thought out and varied courses and some superb power ups. Whilst it may lack marks for originality, when the source material is so fine, who is complaining?
Playstation
Rhythm
Twenty tracks covering a variety of styles from J Pop to Drum and Bass and some fresh from the streets visuals make this one to savour for the Beatmania cool cats.
Playstation
Rhythm
The original, the one, the only… Show you got riddum in the comfort of your own home. Strangly addictive in a Parappa the Rapper stylie.
Sony Hardware
Memory Card
Original release of the memory card coming in handy for saving those hairy moments for another day.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Very tidy fishing fest as players cast out for that elusive, fighting sea bass. Both the fisherman and the underwater action are well represented, even a recipe for the fish is provided for those up on their lingo. But no real language barrier stand between man and bass, just good tactics.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
In true football manager style the news caster announces big developments with cheering crowds and meeting dignitaries also necessary besides picking the team and arranging training too. Known in Japanese as Nihon Daihyou Team no Kantoku ni Naro.
Sega Saturn
RPG
Beautifully illustrated anime cut scenes in this epic adventure.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Imagineer pushes the boundaries of this tennis title in going for a polygon approach to this Saturn title. The outer space court particularly impresses with Earth looming large in the background and some breath taking tennis.
PC Engine Hardware
Console
A classic machine that rivaled the Famicom for popularity in Japan and opens up the world of PC Engine Hu Cards such as ‘Cloud Master’, ‘Jackie Chan’, ‘Gekisha Boy’, ‘Hell’s Journey’…
Sega Hardware
Console
A more compact Saturn with a coloured buttoned joypad and an off white finish described as mist grey, but certainly alot more cheerful than the original release. Makes a great starter machine into which to enter one of the largest, unexplored galaxies of import stars.
Sega Hardware
Controller
Tidy spare pad in the white design with multicoloured buttons. Well designed feeling snug in the hand even when in the tightest of shmup corners facing a barrage of shrapnel.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Sega Sport’s success sprang from titles such as Victory Goal. Realistic low scoring games are common place between two players. Up to four players with multitap (not included.) Full complement of J League teams and official commentary.
Sega Saturn
Sports
Well crafted kick around with four player mode a scream, although as such unlikely to be contributing much to the Respect campaign. Utilises world teams and the game engine has a good balance of arcade feel with varied goal scoring.
Playstation
Action
Capcom attained a very high standard of graphical excellence on the Playstation having honed its survival horror teeth on the other platforms first. Bursting out of the confines of the mansion, Capcom takes the series in a bold direction in terms of gameplay too as players wander through the streets to the overrun police station and uninhabitable hospital listening out for munching zombies and the irrepressible Nemesis. Shenmue style split second decision moments induce the fear of God into even the most rock steady of gamers as the players plight hit news lows. Atmospheric and spooky – its like we’ve never been away.
