PS2
RPG
Fine, frantic RPG with colourful as the avatar representatives with plenty of special moves in the combat to surprise even the most seasoned of RPG veterans.
Playstation
RPG
Beautifully rendered settings in that delightful green hue for exploring with the equally lavishly rendered sprites that still have enough charm over polygons to feel deep attachment to them.
PS2
RPG
Superb and memorable battles as the developers are able to throw off the cloak of Final Fantasy and cut loose in terms of gaming style without the pressure of an expectant audience and sequel syndrome. Bringing down the off shore giant particularly sticks in the memory and the combat is quick and intuitive. A superb story backs up the hard work that has gone into its core engine and the presentation is impeccable.
Super Famicom
Puzzle
Nontan is a children’s book in Japan and Game Freak have kept it colourful with simple icons of frogs, fish and apples that need pairing up to clear your screen. Simple and innocent hiding devilish gameplay. Quite a collectable.
Famicom Cart
Simulation
Very tidy ball mechanics and nice power ups in the shop make for a fine pinball game. The RPG fantasy theme throws bosses into the mix besides the power ups and the levels are themed with gargoyles and skeletons in keeping with the theme. Super table top flipper fun.
Sega Hardware
Cable
S Video cable for the Sega Saturn with generous length to provide a crisper picture according to many Saturn head.
PS Vita
Simulation
Drops players into the zany world of Osomatsu kun with the array of madcap characters from the series causing chaos. Makes great use of the license with the stars full of colour and backed up by fine voice acting.
PS4
One on One Beat Em Up
Ex members of crack 2D outfit SNK put their heads together and unleash furious combos in this sequel with the power of the PS4 ensuring the future truly is now. Genki harks back to King of the Fighters series with the slick combos, and well-proportioned characters with the obligatory skill factor being all important, as opposed to button mashing.
PS4
Shoot Em Up
Strikers 1945, Strikers 1945 II, Strikers 1999, Zero Gunner 2, Sol Divide and Dragon Blaze will have shooter veterans in raptures. Strikers 1999 and Dragon Blaze are certainly worth further investigation from fans of the old school blaster.
Switch
Shoot Em Up
Claustrophobic caverns and tunnels under gigantic bosses as they skim overhead make for an intense experience. A feel of Darius’ organic amphibious bosses and superb attention to pixel perfect detail.
Switch
Shoot Em Up
Granada, Psychic Storm, Gaiares and Avenger make for a roster well-worth revisiting and not just for vintage gamers. Gaiares will delight many yet to sample its charms, yet all stand tall in this fine back roster from cult cracker Telenet.
Switch
Shoot Em Up
The Switch once again steps up as the bastion of all shooters of yesteryear. Alfa System’s very high production values shine through as you once again take to the skies in super human form to battle the Shikigami Castle which is hovering menacingly above Tokyo. Adrenalin fuelled shmup fiends will relish the multiplier opportunities pushing reflexes and retinas to the extreme levels of endurance.
Switch
Platform
The beautiful, timeless anime look of Valis is revived to celebrate her thirty-fifth anniversary and the gameplay is just as wholesome and rewarding now as it has been on many a retro platform over the decades. Valis parts one to three show the bishojo is definitely back.
Merchandise
Merchandise
Pixel perfect Dragon Quest themed tape showing the world map and plenty of Slimes. Looks a treat on presents, not that you’ll want to give it away from your inventory.
Nintendo 3DS
Platform
With heavy respect to the prestige the original Playstation and Super Famicom versions are held in comes the 3DS update from the original team. Ms. Kawase is joined by fellow platform protegees Emiko and Ms. Nokoyama offering differing abilities. The core remains the use of a line to swing between platforms all looking very smart in 3D with the players characters themselves looking like a character from the Wii Animal Crossing. Lets just hope it isn’t sayonara yet.
Soundtracks
Soundtrack
Charting some supreme chip tunes from Mario Bros journey from munching mushrooms on the Famicom via the Game Boy to pipe dropping in the Super Famicom with the N64 and GameCube not forgotten en route to the destination of the Wii U. Happy, cheery game music to lift the mood.
Soundtracks
Soundtrack
Delightful tunes from Zelda, Famicom Wars, Wrecking Crew, Devil World, Metroid and the Famicom Disk System.
PS4
Shoot Em Up
Wonderful to have the shooter torch passed on burning so brightly. Its just a shame you are not given a split second to appreciate the detailed sprites and parallax layers. And it is a shame you might wish for the absent slowdown in some levels such is the frantic pace of the on screen onslaught. Five levels of mayhem: please remember to keep an eye out for the pigs that need rescuing.
