The Giant Gram series actually follows on from where Virtua fighter based All Japan Pro Wrestling left off on the Saturn. This makes the 2000 version the third instalment and an enjoyable hoedown even for those who leave the leopard spot leotards to the professionals. A bucket load of techniques to master including some super charged specials and counter moves, a commentator as keen as mustard, a crowd that’s easily whipped into a frenzy – what more could a grappler ask for apart from perhaps Giant haystacks on the roster of many All Japan Pro Wrestling legends? Four players can really have some button bashing fun.

Ataru seems destined for many ominous days as the priest Cherry often predicts. Caught between Lum and Shinobu and half the members of his school class (the female ones) only chaos can reign. Great digital comic game for fans of the very popular anime series.

A splendid, sprawling epic cocooned in a wonderful threads of story. Similar to Grandia except with the camera zooming in on the battles scenes in a cinematic style. The finest Saturn RPG?

GS Mikami has plenty of Shinto inspired high jinx as Mikami links the modern world with a spiritual universe. Plenty of cultural confusion reminiscent of a Rumiko Takahashi manga escapade. Great humour and with plenty of options.

The cute kiwi bird armed with a bow and arrow is the only New Zealand connection in this classic Taito style release, believed to be a precursor to Liquid Kids. As Tiki your quest involves rescuing your chick who was taken away by a kiwi vending leopard seal. Plenty of extras such as screen freeze, speed ups, balloon and underwater levels and warps to help you along.

Second outing on the PSX and Tomba is in fine fettle on his quest to recue his friend from the marauding pigs. Tomba is armed to the teeth with a plethora of fun weaponry. Selectable views add much to the playability of this very enjoyable platformer. Known as Tombi in Europe for some reason.

Play as an octopus, bunny girl or tropical fish amongst the bizarre characters in Konami’s charming Parodius series. Areas include on a Japanese motorway, inside a cake and a UFO catcher game. Very refreshing in an era of too many games that take themselves far too seriously. Hats off to Konami for its self depreciating humour. Known in Japan as Gokujou Parodius.

Worthy of purchase for the box artwork alone if it weren’t for the well designed mecha waiting their turn to attack each other inside. A lesson in strategy combat titles thats truly absorbing and well worthy of the Squaresoft label. Praise due to the Cybernator creator Toshio Tsuchida’s work on the mecha design.

FX chip utilised to full potential to generate a cutesy feel to the 3D race action. But as with every Nintendo title its the play mechanics that make this a real pleasure to play. That and the characterisation of the four different vehicles. Oh and the hidden secrets.

Reminiscent of League Bowling on the Neo Geo, Super Bowling uses the comic expression of the players avatars and light humour to keep the mood uplifting. Players must choose a line, then the spin and power meters must be used with a steady hand.

An immense experience is available in this strategic RPG with such fine attention to detail in spite of the limited capacity of carts. Every character seems to have the variables needed to bring them to life in relation to others and this created the feel of a living world in which to send out troops in different formations to succeed in battle. A lavish amount of detail makes this a truly believable experience.

				Shoot Em Up

Solid conversion of the eternal shmup with some clever parallax. Whilst mutiple routes mean there are only seven levels to get through, the replay value is massive with twenty eight levels to savour. There must have been some catfish in the Taito office at the time judging by all the aquatic themed and highly imaginative enemies you need to take down.

Bash out some beats to the eternal rhythm of the Japanese festival which celebrates life itself. Coaches players gradually before letting them loose in a drum sticks frenzy.

Konami makes waves once again in the footballing arena with this very tidy soccer game. Officially licensed from the France World Cup allowing players to rewrite the history of the tournament that saw the host nation come good and Ronaldo go walk about.

Captures the airs and expansive feel of the original arcade source material perfectly as you whizz around town picking up fares. Time constraints soon pile on the pressure, but that’s where the knowledge comes in. Being able to power slide the corners helps too, as well as impressing cheerleader passengers…
				Dreamcast

Full on cockpit view to cause a bit of a potential for motion sickness: not quite of the proportions of the Gloc 360 arcade machine. The game blends arcade spills with a bit more gumption required than just trigger finger blasting in order to progress with the on screen hairline and overall presentation giving a good sense of piloting a lethal flying machine.

Hello? We’re in! Bag a big ‘un under the watchful gaze of the gangster look a like Matsukata san. Otherwise you might end up feeding the fishes somewhere in the Pacific Ocean…

All the dramatic tension of a Gundam game, played from the in-cockpit view. Who says the Saturn can’t do polygons – this works a treat and the frame rate is rapid.

More of the prequel as nothing too much has been shifted in terms of gameplay mechanics, just continues on the expansive story. Whilst Gun Griffon purists will lament the more accessible control system, Bandai was catering for the mass market appeal Gundam has in Japan. The game comes in a collectable hardback presentation book.
