PS2
Rhythm
Konami’s initial RPG for the PS2 sees you playing as young vagabond called Mouse. The story begins with Mouse, having composed music for a royal wedding, being inruiged as to why the bride looks so glum. Compatible with the ‘Guitar Freaks’ guitar (not supplied.)
Sega Hardware
Console
A more compact Saturn with a coloured buttoned joypad and an off white finish described as mist grey, but certainly alot more cheerful than the original release. Makes a great starter machine into which to enter one of the largest, unexplored galaxies of import stars.
Nintendo Hardware
Console
The finest Nintendo console to date with some incredible feats of programming and imagination, so much so that the N64 went out to replicate its wonders. Plenty of import only titles to enjoy as similar to the Saturn, the SFC flourished in its native climate. These are well loved machines, but a great way to get into bargain base import gaming, especially if you can live without the box in your loft.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Karate style fighting game with a vast array of texture mapped polygon protagonists to choose from – including a martial artist sporting a very fetching afro. Also has events, wood breaking and training by the sea in true karate style.

PS2
Action
Spiritual sequel to Panzer Dragoon as the dragon soars through the skies, twisting to avoid other beasts to blast a fireball at the hordes below before dismounting to fight them with swishing sword in hand. Positively glistening in Square Enix polish as much as the sunny skies. Known in the West as Drakengard 2.
PS2
A Bit Special
Players trace patterns to launch attacks. The more elaborate the pattern, the more powerful the move, like a fighter. Full title: Bakufuu Slash Kizna Arashi.
Nintendo DS
Action
Treasures work remains innovative and refreshing as the developer continually reinvents itself never resting on the laurels of its underground hardcore fan base. The anime’s distinct and sometimes creepy look with lurchingly tall characters has carried over effortlessly and the whole production oozes the sort of vintage claret class you’d expect from the aptly named developer. Mass four player brawls are possible, but the one player mode makes for interesting battles with what look like extras from Spirited Away but the lightening gameplay gives little opportunity to admire the scenery.

Brilliant PS4
Shoot Em Up
Granted most modern shooters end up in a screen full of rainbow coloured bullets (though that said old school shooters were never short of a projectile or two.) But Cave has certainly grabbed Genki’s goat in going for a World War style of isometric background buildings as detailed polygon biplanes float into place having caught the eye with a neat bit of scaling. Plenty of on ground action as pilots fly their female characters through the on-screen onslaught. Superb stuff demonstrating Caves rich arcade heritage.
SNK Hardware
Handheld
What Genki would have given for this in the Eighties playground… A scaled down Neo Geo arcade machine with forty built in games including KoF, Metal Slug, Top Hunter, Ninja Commando, Burning Fight, Cyber Lip, Aso II, Twinkle Star Sprites, Samurai Spirits, World Heroes, Fatal Fury, Last Blade, Ninja Masters, King of the Monsters, Sengoku 2001, Shock Troopers, Blazing Star, Super Sidekicks… I dread to think what the AES cost of those would be. Happy days.
Switch
Shoot Em Up
Wonderful to have the shooter torch passed on burning so brightly. Its just a shame you are not given a split second to appreciate the detailed sprites and parallax layers. And it is a shame you might wish for the absent slowdown in some levels such is the frantic pace of the on screen onslaught. Five levels of mayhem: please remember to keep an eye out for the pigs that need rescuing.
Switch
RPG
Plenty of platform action in this RPG with combat sequences that are very reminiscent of Guardian Heroes in appearance with big, bold and brash protagonists. Very colourful and fast-paced.
Soundtracks

Brilliant Super Famicom
Shoot Em Up
Graphically pleasing with liberal use of colour as you guide Willow on her broomstick quest for wish-granting sweets accompanied by her fairy friend Silk. Success is rewarded with an appropriately off kilter end of level tea break. Intriguingly Willow gets to select her favourite weaponry before the offset and in game Silk can be used to attack along with the fire dragon, star frenzy or lightning assaults depending on which crystals have been collected.
