Merchandise
Blind packed Final Fantasy XII Pin Badges each coming with a guarantee card. 12 types plus the secret one. Vaan, Ashe, Penelo, Basch, Balflear, Fran, Vayne, Larsa, Gabranth, Bomb, Seeq and Mandragora.
Sega Saturn
Simulation
FMV adventure where participants get to select where to go next alongside having to answer or ask queries from time to time. Suitably hammy acting adds to the appeal of this past genre.
Nintendo 64
Sports
Update of the Super Famicom top seller with Itoi Shigesato given a full 3D work out on the N64. Initial catches won’t go breaking your tsuri controller, but these smaller catches can be used to bring in hard cash for upgrading the boat and equipment. As with all fishing, chatting to the locals will reveal the latest hot spots to check out for that killer bass. Just make sure the rumble pack is switched on to get that feel for the bite.
Sony Hardware
Controller
The height of kitsch which every self respecting otaku shouldn’t be without. Even comes with a stop watch rest. Infinitely adds to the realism when playing Densha De Go on the Playstation.
Playstation
RPG
The attention to detail is stunning and the pastel shaded look to its isometric graphics works a treat. Aurally pleasing too with beautiful sound effects and emotional music. There are plenty of times the heart strings are strummed like a violin.
PS2
Action
The spiritual successor to Shenmue started here amongst the flotsam on the streets of Tokyo. The neon looks the same, but there is a gritty side to the streets and our hero is never too far from getting his tattoos out and more than a generous amount of fisticuffs.
PS2
RPG
Breath-taking graphics and around sixty hours gameplay make this one for the true RPG fan. Enix return to form with real time battles and a bravery meter which builds up through successful attacks and defences, rewarding players with bonuses if they can resist the temptation to use it on an opponent.
Sony Hardware
Controller
Sony’s answer to Samba De Amigo with high tempo soundtrack (including of course Tubthumping) but instead of using maracas, players attach sensors to their wrists and ankles. The player then follows the martial moves of their on screen persona gaining points for successfully landing a kick or punch at the correct time. There is also a visual reward for landing the moves on time such as being able to see a fireball travel across the screen. Done with intent the techniques give a good work out and the graphics are nicely done set in stereotypical Chinese situations. Rumours are there’s an unlockable Lupin song in there too for when you’re Chumbawhamba-ed out.
Sony Hardware
Controller
Dedicated slot machine (or fruit machine) fans will lap this up with button layout just like a modern slot machine to flitter away a few virtual credits. Superb way to spruce up ones favourite gambling game and at the end of the day wont leave you out of chips.
PC Engine Hardware
Accessory
Plug in the original PC Engine to allow data to be saved to its back-up facility or the Core Grafx or Core Grafx II. Very retro chic and revolutionary at the time.
Nintendo Hardware
Accessory
A chunkier King Slime uses his fine, rotund girth to good effect as up to three DS carts can be stored in the reverse. A handy way to carry games and keep the pins clean.
Sony Hardware
Accessory
The first one hundred thousand lucky gamers to preorder Binary Domain in Japan were given these very tidy headphones and microphone set as a preorder gift. So players can feel the part as well as look it during NPC interactions.
Sony Hardware
Controller
Enhances enjoyment of the Beatmania series ten fold with the buttons laid out just where the player needs them ‘to produce a pleasant and cool sound’ and the turntable for authentic feeling scratching. ‘The moment you make a scratch, you will be hooked on Beatmania.’ Another wacky yet essential console accessory fresh from Japan.
PS2
Action
Fine sequel to the popular traditional sword fighting game in the ancient Japanese way with tactics required to live to tell the tale. Highly atmospheric with tatami mats and sweeping temple roofs.
Playstation
RPG
Imaginative quest with seven different players selectable, each with their own story intertwined with the others in the cast making for an excellent replay value. Combat is particularly strong with development of a player’s skills possible through practise of the same techniques. A high degree of in game freedom to truly explore the fantasy world.
Playstation
Sports
Graphically simplistic tennis game neatly drop shot-ing the polygon heavy approach for a more playable full screen affair. Rally potential aplenty with plenty of venues and characters to choose from.
PS2
RPG
The core gameplay remains just as exquisite as its Playstation incarnations, yet the visual level would make a J Pop star blush with intense attention to detail and amazing models to endear the player to the characters (or otherwise.) Uncle Squaresoft still can tell a great post-dinner yarn, so pull up a pew and savour the experience which envelops gamers like a familiar blanket in this remix of FFX-2.
Playstation
Sports
The start of the series and its clear how much planning Sony put into making the definitive golf game, just as it did with Gran Turismo and the driving circuit. The course design excels, as does the character design with a colourful roster of players. Fine weather effects and the feel of the great outdoors (albeit a little over-done) to truly refresh like the effect of a stroll round eighteen holes would have.
Playstation
One on One Beat Em Up
Ring walks set the tension, but it’s the ability to zoom out to fit in the ring that adds much to the fight action. The camera does zoom in too and the mixed martial arts blows feel like they have real force behind them due to the solid 3D pugilists.
Playstation
Sports
Think of a Playstation version of the cult film Rollerball where the alien, robot and futuristic humans battle for the ball and then must fire it in the goal shoot. Pretty much anything goes in between in a great joy to behold, especially when taking out an opponent at a key moment.
Playstation
Sports
Has a graphical look like Little Big Adventure with all the associated razzmatazz you would associate with the game – so much so you can almost smell the hot dogs.
