One on One Beat Em Up
Twenty nine characters of which two are bosses offers plenty of moves and martial techniques to master as the King of Fighters series grew up in this forward thinking incarnation. Lavishly realised stages including the former Osaka HQ of SNK and more frames of animation for the combatants, but its the speeded up gameplay with greater emphasis on combos’ that makes this hard to beat. Projectile attacks have been shortened so they no longer continue endlessly making for tight close combat.

Played in Matrix style environments that break up as they are destroyed to reveal sparking circuitry beneath, players take control of one of the three female androids charged with extinguishing the alien threat. Each lovely android has her own attributes: the all rounder, the slow, but punch packing and the nippy but weedy requiring different androids for the various missions and the weapons are very satisfying. Controls are similar to Virtual On with the analogue sticks coming to the fore: soon mastered though giving a great sense of interaction. The anime cut scenes are of production quality and good reward for a hard fought battle. Yet to see the whole selection takes time and increases the replay value multi-fold with performance determining which sequence is rewarded.

Tour the Pokemon card clubs to challenge the members and hopefully get a shot at beating the leader. Quick thinking is required to try and gain all eight master cards and become the mythical Pokemon card master. Its possible for players to create their own custom deck with the real fun being trying to complete the full album. Nice overhead persepective to the exploration with cute sprites suiting the GameBoy Color’s screen drawing players in once again to that Pokemon world. Also known as Pokemon Card Trading Game.

Kinnikuman is an alien prince whose escapades are detailed in the Shonen Jump manga. This is a whacked out wrestling game could teach the WWF games a half nelson or two.

Jaw dropper in the pre-Saturn release media presentations. Kenji Endo’s opus is full of turns and twists and strange events. Don’t play before bed!

The Winning Post series is one of Koei’s cash cows in Japan funding its Dynasty Warriors warchest. This is a thoroughbred title for the wannabee Frankie Dettori’s.

Sequel to the popular take on Sony’s Minna no Golf with cute, solid CG players pitching and chipping there way around sunshine filled, feel good courses. Improves on the prequel with some nice hidden areas such as a fruit machine and black jack game. Also known as Golf Shiyouyo 2 New Challengers.

Crazed, manga-inspired fight fest with plenty of speed lines and manga style sound effects in katakana. Players can literally take a whipping in their undies, such is the roster of pugilists to choose from. The action and specials are as relentless as the tunes.

Not quite the charter granted by King John to acknowledge rights and roles, yet it does get a mention as the power that can overcome all others in this fantasy RPG. Players roam the lands with female characters taking a strong lead as the in game artists show us their fair hand with some beautiful work.

Furious, frantic fight action as the tradition of martial arts and manga collide in a rather noisy world. The specials are truly worthy of the name and summon spirits and even pet frogs in order to overcome an opponent. The backgrounds have depth and look superb, yet alas the noodle (or ramen) shop cant be visited. Known as Naruto Ultimate Ninja in the West.

A bit like looking after a fish with a human face and that evolves quickly to learn new tricks. An intriguing game that thinks well outside the pond.

Its no use being all fingers and thumbs when the rapid combination button presses are required in order to unleash the latex clad special moves from our masked hero. A superb license that savours Japans great super hero tradition and the lashing of action have translated across well to the PS2.

A great conversion of the original manga source into game format drawing heavily on the boxing themed source material which adds much to the overall package. Hard training (and plenty of raw eggs) are a requisite to train up the young pugilist in this man management game.

Successful series which enjoyed an update to the PS3 as players build up their reef with different species of fish. Swimming with the stingrays and clown fish is a relaxing pastime.

The feudal Japan setting in the winter months makes the visual pyrotechnics stand out as players soon discover you are no ordinary samurai. Koei is a real master of such action titles and Genki kowtows to a fine developer. Known as Warriors Orochi in the West.

An expansive, open world to charge through with sword drawn for the non-stop, relentless battle action. The code theme makes for a Matrix style changing game world with Square Enix kicking loose and relishing bashing a few skulls.
