Mega Drive
Sports
Whilst not always obeying the laws of physics, Super Monaco 2 has some fine circuits to hone the drivers handling skills, even if its firmly arcade in its approach. Includes the Senna GP with tracks designed by the great driver himself alongside the World GP with its mighty challenge to make sure its you spraying the champagne, not down in the pits.
Mega Drive
Action
The title refers to the services of a super hero who can be hired to grapple against Godzilla and Mothra look a likes wherever they may be causing havoc in this gaming equivalent of a B movie. Also has some RPG elements in the setting up of battles between our super hero and the varing kaiju. Except to be truthful our man hasn’t quite obtained super hero nirvana: he is just doing these odd jobs to pay for his lycra suit such as opening a bank account. Followed up on the Dreamcast and Xbox.
Sega Saturn
Shoot Em Up
Contains arcade perfect conversions of both the original and the sequel of the classic Gradius all on one CD making this collectable to shmup fiends everywhere. Gradius II updates the proven formula with a dash of graphical whizz and aural pizazz.
Sega Saturn
RPG
A sprawling series in terms of man hours, but the plot keeps it all closely knit in the fantasy RPG and battle sim stylie.
Playstation
Puzzle
Puyo Puyo is Japanese onomatopoeia for something soft to touch, referring to the jelly like balls that fall from the sky to be aligned with similar colours in this saccharine soaked, kawaii puzzler. Highly accomplished version which was re-released to introduce its polished gameplay to the PS2 crew.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Simulation
Nine ladies make up the roster of staff of the Mahjong Clinic and they dont do much to cure patients of their passion for the table game by undressing when you win. Not really tough love then, unless unfamiliar with the rules of the game. But plenty of motivation is given by opponents to succeed.
PC Engine Super CD ROM
Simulation
Known as ‘Starblazers’ in the West, this space simulation is based on the true classic, which even has its own exhibitions in Japan and its own distinct feel in an over crowded market place. Yamato is a flying naval ship and also the believed to be the essence of the Japanese spirit. The game captures the romantic overtones of the original anime.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
Get further involved in the Virtua Fighter series as gamers get to meet Akira more in his familiar surrounds practising kung fu. Lots of footage make this a very tidy addition to the GG collection.
Sega Saturn
A Bit Special
A collectors item for fans of VF: watch Jacky about town in his sports car, hussling the pool hall or prancing around with his Dalmatian! Owners of five or more of the series were rewarded with a special Dual disk.
PC Engine FX
Simulation
A fine RPG in its own right with lush gaming world realised in great detail and all important characters of intrest so that players feel a conncetion to them. The certificate comes from the saucy cut scenes with steamy voice acting, but this game stands tall on its own.
Gamecube
Action
Capcom remains the master of survival horror as it tweaks the Resident Evil engine to come up with a masterpiece of GC manipulation – not that you’ll be wanting to get too close to viewing the detailed textures. And not that its only the visual splendour Capcom considered: items can now be left on the floor and teamwork is required to get out of the many claustrophobic spots.
Playstation
RPG
Continues to move, shake and stir after the emotionally draining experience of the prequel which will have drawn a tear from even the most grizzled gaming veterans eye. Squaresoft maintains its own standards when it comes to quality and its consistent demands of improved visuals and slicker stories is never more evident in the leap made here.
PS2
RPG
A shift from the usual fisticuffs as players explore a Japanese town with a heady mix of traditional martial arts, high school students and talking lion teddy bears. Subtitled Hanatareshi Yabou.
Dreamcast
Sports
Solid grid iron representation with Sega Sports matching the high presentation standards matching that of EAs sprawling empire and capturing the key moments of the sport perfectly. Plenty of cheer leaders for sport as slick as this and playable to non fans of the sports, just as EAs Ice Hockey back in the day.
Famicom Cart
Sports
Brutality on the pitch as players slug and kick it out for possession with the referee seemingly missing in action. The ball can be chipped up to set up an overhead or at least try and avoid an onrushing defenders attention.
Super Famicom
Shooter
Making great use of the FX chip to power plenty of polygons around in this tidy mech shooter where the robot can also morph into other vehicles as gameplay dictates. The graphics work well but its the gameplay ingenuity shown that makes this star shine brightly away from the black hole of gaming oblivion.
Miscellaneous Games
Action
Arcade level graphical achievements and gameplay to match as the players penguin pecks platforms to negotiate a safe passage for the egg through the screens laden with traps and adversaries. A real gem in Sega’s crown that shows why it enjoyed the fine times ahead.
Famicom Cart
Action
A maze version of Family Trainer where the young lad must run through the 3D levels avoiding bats and the like. Interesting use of the Family Trainer mat.
Super Famicom
Platform
The huge Sonic Mario Rivalry of the 90s had a cost on the many fronts the battle was fought. Busby was an attempt to gain a mascot for Accolade, no doubt the start of the bean counting men getting involved in programming. Despite his lack of charisma, Busby has enough abilities to endear himself to gamers as he speeds through the levels Sonic style grabbing balls of wool instead of rings. Sonic in wolfs clothing for the Super Famicom. Full Western title is Busby in Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind.
Nintendo Hardware
Accessory
A very dapper attachment for the original GameBoy to magnify the size of the screen.
Sony Hardware
Controller
Sony attained such levels of perfection in its Playstation controller, it is little wonder the winning formula has changed so little over the new incarnations of its hardware. Intuitive and snug, most reassuring when being chased by the undead in Biohazard to avoid button flapping and mashing.
